The list for my favourite anime vampires is kind of always under construction. Largely because I love vampires and also because every year we seem to get a few anime that take their own interpretation on the blood-suckers. I was kind of hoping Mars Red would add a few new names to the list but alas that story kind of fizzled in the end.

Honourable mention this week goes to Staz from Blood Lad and Alucard from Hellsing (because even if I don’t mention him on the list, everyone else will).
I also need to throw Dracula from Castlevania here as well because after watching season two I’m just not that into him anymore.
Number 5: Kaname from Vampire Knight
I was really tossing up whether it would be Kaname or Zero on this list when I decided that at least one of them had to make the top 5 but ultimately Kaname being a pure blood vampire and not a human turned into a vampire kind of tipped the scales in his direction. More importantly, it isn’t every character that can turn other vampires into confetti. Kaname may spend way too long brooding on things and is a terrible communicator, but he certainly has the whole presence, attraction and air of danger that tend to be defining traits in certain types of vampire stories.
Number 4: Jirou from Black Blood Brothers
Jirou is a fantastic character. He’s pretty traditional in terms of being a vampire who is sensitive to sunlight and salt water, he doesn’t like being awake during the day, but he is definitely a fighter particularly when his ‘brother’ is being threatened. Which makes him a bit different from so many anime vampires that kind of have their own rules. Add to that the usual fantastic vampiric fashion sense (because who doesn’t look amazing in that shade of red) and a very cool sword and you have one very fun character.
Number 3: Carmilla from Castlevania Season 2
A new entry on the list. While Dracula may have been relatively unimpressive throughout season 2 of Castlevania (okay a lot unimpressive unless you like broody and sulky in your anime vampire), Carmilla swept in and shook things up. While a lot of her manipulations really served no purpose and ultimately she kind of got nowhere, I have to admit she had style and was definitely the most memorable of the new characters introduced during the second season.

Number 2: Mikaela from Owari no Seraph
I still haven’t actually reviewed Owari and I really should get around to it, particularly as I now have the DVD’s and any story that focuses on anime vampires vs humans is worth at least a discussion.
Mikaela is one of my favourite characters because of his transformation from human to vampire (yet arguably he remains the most human character in the show). Even after everything that happens to Mikaela he never loses sight of what he wants to protect and he will go to any length to keep it safe. It would be nice to say the whole vampiric strength thing was an asset but in Owari just being a vampire really isn’t enough.
Number 1: Megumi from Shiki
She absolutely had to make the list of anime vampires and all things considered, given she’s been the vampire I’ve consistently liked the most, she probably deserves the top spot at this point. Another human turned vampire and loving it (at least at first). Megumi always believed she was destined for more than the village could offer her and while she may not have intended to die, she certainly made the most out of her undead life while she could. Megumi gets bonus points for being one of the creepiest stalkers ever.

Mine is Kaname! It’s really a close call because I love the other vampires from the Night class, like Shiki, Rima and Ichijo. I love the art in Vampire Knight and think they all look so gorgeous!
Vampire Knight always did look really good.

I’ve seen Vampire Knight and Seraph of the End but not the others. I’ll have to check those other two out. I’m finding it hard to find good vampire anime.
Has no one mentioned Kyuuketsuki Miyu yet (Vampire Princess Miyu)? Seriously?

Yes, as much as I mock the show (and I do) I still own the thing on DVD and have watched it multiple times now.

While I’m no expert on anime vampires, I do tend to enjoy them. It was really neat when Crunchyroll released an OVA based on the “Noblesse” manwa (http://www.crunchyroll.com/noblesse-awakening). And episode 9 of Ancient Magus’ Bride has a brief appearance by a vampire who’s rather intriguing as a character, and a bit different from your usual type of vampire…
The Noblesse OVA was pretty cool but definitely needed more.

Hellsing is on my watch list, I read a big part of Vampire Knight…maybe I should check out the Anime…
I’m reveiwing Vampire Knight next week. I’m not the biggest fan but it is watchable enough.

The only criticism is that it barely gets started in four episodes. Looking forward to the continuation next year.

Saya from Blood: The Last Vampire would be one of my picks. I was surprised not to see Alucard from Hellsing. Although one can make an argument about him being an anti-hero god mode Marty Stu, it does feel weird not seeing him on a list like this, but to each their own.
I wasn’t a bit fan of Hellsing and Alucard, while powerful, just wasn’t that interesting to me.

Great post! Dracula was the first that came to my mind as well (we will probably see more of him next year,when season 2 for Castlevania arrives). And my second choice is Saya from Blood the Last Vampire. She was just a bad ass character in my opinion.😊

I was absolutely enthralled by Megumi’s character, even before she became a vampire, so it’s awesome to see her on this list. Same goes for Mikaela, who is easily my favorite Seraph of the End character! Woohoo!
Two additions I would make? Well, there’s the obvious Kisshot from Kizumonogatari, but also little miss Evangeline A.K. McDowell from Negima!?, a show that is near and dear to my heart, and a character that made me wish Laura Bailey played every blonde haired little girl.
Can’t say I’ve watched that many shows with vampires in ’em I don’t think (or maybe I’m just forgetting some) But let’s see…
~ Mina Tepes from Dance in the Vampire Bund — for being one of if not arguably the best *politician* I’ve seen in anime to date. Wonderful lines of dialogue from her.
~ Araragi/Shinobu from the Monogatari Series — I love their story. Not to say it’s a ‘wonderful and happy’ story, but the bond that they have because of their shared vampirism is just amazing to see unravel over the course of the show.
~ Saya from Blood+ — ’cause you can never go wrong with vampires and katanas 😀
Mina Tepes is interesting as a politician. A little less interesting as a vampire.
There are millions of reasons to love Shinobu and one of the main ones is that she, being an incredibly powerful vampiress and doing all those things all vampires are famous for (you know, like… eating donuts) — at the same time she is absolutely non-stereotypical. The best (and definitely the cutest) vampire ^_^ So thanks for mentioning her

I seriously considered D but then decided he wasn’t actually a full vampire so I took him off the list. Still, he is very cool.
Dracula is freakly strong and scary but also misunderstood.
as i watched the anime, he didnt do anything wrong until they killed his wife
Though his reaction to that was a little extreme. Still, I liked that his motive was clear and he has some pretty cool power for a vampire.
