The Best and Worst Anime of Winter 2018 – Seriously Last Chance To Vote

kokkoku12a

This is the final call for votes as the poll will close tomorrow. You can choose up to three series in both the best of and worst of the season polls.

Remember, the three best shows (as voted by the readers) from each season will be used at the end of the year in the vote for best of the year (just so I don’t have to try to list every single anime in the final poll).

Here’s your chance to vote for the Best Anime of Winter 2018!

Remember, this is not for technical best animation or any other objective measure. It is just the show (or shows) you liked the most and had the most fun watching this season. So choose up to three and vote away and then remember to share.

Now for the Worst Anime of Winter 2018!

In case you are new to one of these polls, I ask that you don’t just vote for something because you hated episode 1. This is the worst show you actually sat through and watched this season. The bottom of your watch list. So the show that wins won’t be the actual worst show, it will be a show good enough to string you along, but not actually ever good to watch.

So far 155 votes is the best count for one of these polls and that was the Best of 2017. I’d love to get a larger sample size so that these polls become more reflective of the community even though I know not all of my readers are watching currently streaming anime. Please vote and then share this post. The more the merrier.

Thanks for reading.

Reflections on Anime in 2017 – The Best and The Worst of the Year (in my opinion and the reader’s choice)

party31

No feature this week because it is time to announce the winner of the reader’s choice for Best Anime of 2017. Still, first I’ll share my personal picks now that I’ve had a couple of weeks to think, consider, weigh up and re-evaluate. I even had time for a binge of one or two of these shows just to double check that my opinion hadn’t changed. And now it is time. Time to announce the shows I felt were the best and worst of the year that was. I’m giving my lists of top 10 best and worst for 2017 and finally the results from the reader’s poll.

My rules:

  • I need to have watched the whole series (or as much as has aired in 2017 – I know some of these are continuing on).
  • My judgement is entirely based on the entertainment I got out of watching the anime (so I already know some shows are actually objectively not very good but I enjoyed them – or they are on the worst list even though they are pretty quality but they didn’t appeal to me).
  • Feel free to suggest your own top 10 best or worst in the comments.

Starting from the best.

  1. March Comes in Like a Lion (Season 2)
  2. My Hero Academia (Season 2)
  3. Natsume Yuujinchou (Season 6)
  4. March Comes in Like a Lion (Season 1)
  5. Girls’ Last Tour
  6. Land of the Lustrous
  7. Princess Principal
  8. ACCA
  9. The Ancient Magus’ Bride
  10. The Eccentric Family (Season 2)

March Comes in Like a Lion made the list twice due to the first season finishing in the Winter season and the second season starting in the Autumn season, however the show just continues getting better and better. While I feel bad that Natsume is only sitting in third place, that is probably a sign of just how much I enjoyed some of the shows this year and I couldn’t drop My Hero Academia season 2 any lower because it blew any expectations I had away and delivered a very solid season.

Some surprises on the list include Girls’ Last Tour and Land of the Lustrous. Both of these came out in the Autumn season and I was very surprised by how attached I became to these shows given neither really fits my usual style. Princess Principal was another surprising show that kind of won me over earlier in the year. Meanwhile, I’m kind of happy that ACCA held out out because I genuinely loved watching it even though I know it isn’t the kind of show everyone will like. I feel it really deserves a place on this list and I’m glad it didn’t get bumped off. I also feel bad that KADO did get bumped off. If I was judging these shows based on their first halves only it would have been number 1, but then it all just went so wrong.

Starting from the worst.

  1. Hand Shakers
  2. Dies Irae
  3. The Silver Guardian
  4. Chronos Ruler
  5. Knight’s & Magic
  6. Clean Freak Aoyama-Kun
  7. Katsugeki Touken Ranbu
  8. Tales of Zestiria the X (Season 2)
  9. Akashic Records of a Bastard Magical Instructor
  10. Granblue Fantasy

No surprises that Hand Shakers stayed at the top of the worst list, though Dies Irae was definitely fighting for a chance at the top spot for worst anime of the year.

The Silver Guardian and Chronos Ruler both ended up being fairly pointless with every little positive (they weren’t trainwrecks by any means but they aren’t exactly good). But, given I have to have watched the show for it to find a place on my list even though there are worse anime out there they don’t get on the final list.

From Knight’s & Magic on, the main criticism I would give all these shows is that by the end of the season I wasn’t enjoying them and was pretty bored. While they all had something that could have been really good and a lot of potential, they just never delivered an overall satisfying viewing experience.

The Reader’s Poll

This has been a twisty ride though the leader did keep its lead throughout. At one point there were only 4 points between the top 5 anime on this list but then a couple of shows got a boost in the last few days.

Right, no further delay.

The winner of the reader’s poll is…

Best2017

There it is: Made in Abyss.

Abyss3

It definitely got a surge toward the end and I think people being able to access in on Amazon probably helped it along in the last couple of days. Still, My Hero Academia and The Ancient Magus Bride did fairly well for themselves. Poor Princess Principal kind of got overlooked for most of the poll and March Comes in Like a Lion and Girls’ Last Tour didn’t make a lot of headway.

Still, the reader’s have spoken and this poll received the most votes so far with 155 people participating. Compare that to last years best of 2016 which received only 55 votes and this one is probably starting to be a bit more reflective of the community. Thanks to everyone who voted and left comments and hopefully your choice came out on top but if it didn’t, there’s always next time.

With that I will say goodbye to 2017, but as you’ve probably noticed, my top 5 lists at the moment are covering some of my favourite characters, themes and visuals from 2017. This will continue until the first week of February and then I’ll finally come up with some new content and stop milking 2017 for every post I can get out of it.

Over to you: Which anime was your favourite or most hated from 2017?

Thanks for reading.

The Worst of Autumn 2017

10cent6c

Something different this season, I’m starting with the worst so that the best can follow. I will admit, this season the poll had the most votes for worst anime of the season and there was a clear winner fairly early on. So, first I’ll share my picks for worst of the season (keeping in mind these are the shows I watched and not the ones I dropped) and then I’ll share the result of the reader’s poll. Be sure to check back later for the best of Autumn.

My Least Favourite Show

Despite a number of shows managing to disappoint or not live up to their potential this season (and yes there were a lot of amazing shows too but that means very few ended up in the middle either being fantastic or meh, dull or just painful), a clear winner for my least favourite show still emerged. Yes, it was the show I should have dropped after that train wreck of a prologue and I certainly shouldn’t have continued beyond episode 3 and yet I’m just not very good at knowing when to admit defeat. You guessed it, Dies Irae. A horrible mess of a show that never got any better and after watching a prologue and 11 episodes I’m still not really sure if there is any point other than crazy characters with super powers being crazy.

Dies6e

My Least Favourite Character

This is actually kind of hard because there were a lot of very bland characters out there this season. I’d nominate most of the cast of Juni Taisen but none of them hung around long enough for me to really care enough about to say they were my least favourite character. And Asta (Black Clover), as much as he would win for most annoying voice of the season, hasn’t actually done enough of anything for me to care about him either. So, sorry to say but the character who I liked the least even though he is kind of important to the story was Koiwai from Recovery of an MMO Junkie. If I knew him in real life I would genuinely despise this guy. Regardless of his intentions, his actions are at times highly questionable and he has way too much fun stirring up Sakurai.

MMO4d

My Least Favourite Story

Unquestionably Juni Taisen. I think what makes this worst is the advertising that insists on twists and turns in a plot that is utterly devoid of anything resembling a twist (unless a lack of twist is a twist these days). And really, where is the story. They fight, they die, we still don’t know what impact that had and we never had any reason to care about them. The few interesting elements of this show can’t save a plot that marches through the process of knocking off its cast without bothering to give us a reason why or making us care.

Juni12a

My Least Favourite Opening Theme

Sengoku Night Blood, oddly enough. It isn’t that it is terrible but it is just painfully generic and unremarkable in any sense of the word. I guess it matches most of what the show delivers but to be honest this was the opening I skipped the most during Autumn.

Sengoku1a

My Least Favourite Visuals

I have to give it to King’s Game. As much as I quite liked this story, the terrible depiction of deaths (heads getting screwed off, bleeding, severed limbs etc) just come off as incredibly laughable when they aren’t completely lame. While the rest of the show is just kind of average, for a horror that takes pride in knocking off its cast with alarming regularity they never really did manage to make even one death look in any way cool, interesting, or even just impressively real. For instance, in the image below, the guy is bleeding from the neck and his head is about to fall off. While censorship could be blamed a little, even that isn’t enough to account for how poor some of the visuals are in this anime.

King9d

Reader’s Choice – Worst Anime of Autumn 2017

Well, here it is. I’m going to be honest in that I was hoping that Dies Irae would take over the lead but I guess I always knew what the majority of people would vote for. Thanks to everyone who participated in the vote this time round.

Worst of Autumn

Yes, King’s Game had an early lead and never really relinquished it. Clearly, bad horror left a bad taste in many viewers mouths.

King9a

That’s it for the worst of Autumn 2017. Be sure to check back later for the best of Autumn post and remember the best of the year poll will open tomorrow with results to go out next week. As always, I would love to know your final thoughts on the season, so what did you vote for and which shows do you think deserved the title worst of the season?

The Best and Worst Anime of Autumn 2017 – Have Your Say

because4b

I know it is early this time around, but I’m opening this poll until the end of December to give everyone a chance to see it and to vote. You can choose up to three series in both the best of and worst of the season polls. After I get the result of this, I am going to take the three best shows (as voted by the readers) from each season to poll the reader’s choice for best of the year so that’s kind of why I’m opening this early and cutting it off at the end of December because otherwise it will be March before I get around to best of the year.

So here we go for best of Autumn 2017. I have tried to include a lot of titles, even ones I am not watching, but you do have the option to write your own title in if I’ve left something amazing off the list. Remember, this is not for technical best animation or any other objective measure. It is just the show (or shows) you liked the most and had the most fun watching this season.

For the worst of Autumn 2017 it is much the same.

And that is it. I’ll try to remember to repost these at least once each week to remind people to vote but if you can share the link that would really help as well. The more people who vote, the more chance of this poll having even a little tiny bit of validity. The Summer vote was the best yet in terms of numbers, so lets see if we can engage more anime fans and really get an idea of what they think the best anime this season was.

The Worst of Summer 2017

18if13c

And now we’ve reached the Worst of Summer for 2017. Earlier today the post for Best of Summer 2017 came out so be sure to check it out if you missed it. In the meantime, below are my least favourite shows and moments followed by the results of the reader’s poll. Be sure to leave a comment below about your least favourite show of the season.

My Least Favourite Show

This one is actually nearly a tie. Katsugeki Touken Ranbu, Chronos Ruler and Knight’s & Magic have all very clearly managed to annoy me this season but which is the least of these three?

Chronos7a

Yep, Chronos Ruler managed to be my least favourite show for the season. The charactes are shallow and basically pointless, the plot goes nowhere in the entire season as not one thing the characters set out to achieve is actually achieved, we know nothing about the villains, and they essentially gain nothing and learn nothing. Oh, we do get a power of friendship kind of ending but even then a minute later the character who kind of learned that lesson is his usual obnoxious self, so no progress.

My Least Favourite Character

So many choices this season. I think I’m settling on Ernesti though. Early in the season, Ernesti was actually kind of okay in Knight’s & Magic with infectious enthusiasm. That was because he was starting his journey and was a young kid with big dreams.

Knights2c

Then we skip over time, a lot of it. Ernesti is getting older, more experienced, and he’s still a giggling maniac. Amazingly a trait charming in a novice isn’t as charming in someone after they’ve already made good progress. More importantly, the more power Ernesti got, the more obnoxious he became. In the end, I really did want someone to shoot him out of the sky.

My Least Favourite Story

Elegant Yokai Apartment Life without question. I’ll never get to review it because I’ve now done a mid-season drop, but it was the worst of all the stories I watched this season and that’s in a season where I sat through Chronos Ruler and Knight’s & Magic.

Yokai10a

The issue isn’t that there are some heavy slice of life elements. Natsume Yuujinchou has heavy slice of life elements and still manages a satisfying overall narrative. The issue is that the characters are too stupid for words and do stupid things. One minute the character is worried about people finding out about the supernatural, the next minute he openly uses magic at school. One minute he’s trying to defend his teacher, the next he’s just writing him off. A friend randomly picks a fight with a group of bikers while taking a walk because, reasons? None of the conflicts make sense because they are usually just randomly dropped in when the writers got too bored with having characters react to food. It was painful to watch and I’m happier and happier about my decision to drop.

My Least Favourite Opening Theme

This one has to go to Knight’s & Magic. The song is actually not that bad and the visuals are okay, but neither are particularly good. What makes this the choice for worst of the season is the break in the music for the characters to shout dialogue from the upcoming episode. That is jarring.

Knights12a

While other shows have done this before to some effect, in this show that I was already sruggling with, seeing upcoming dialogue and scenes from the episode was just one more irritation that the show did not need to throw my way.

My Least Favourite Visuals

So many choices this season and yet I think for most consistently ugly to look I’d have to go with Vatican Miracle Examiner. It is just so dull to look at most of the time. The colour scheme could be forgiven if there were something else interesting, but really, it is just black and gray dullness for most of the viewing time.

Vatican7b

I get they were going for mysterious and the like but mostly this just ended up being unbelievably hard to distinguish anything in a lot of the scenes as characters blended into backgrounds.

Reader’s Choice – Worst Anime of Summer 2017

This vote was very strange this time around with write in votes for Netsuzou Trap very nearly catching up with the lead choices. In the end Knight’s & Magic and Gamers came neck and neck for worst of the season. Still hardly conclusive and the vote here is so scattered I think the main conclusion we can draw is that there was a lot of ho-hum shows this season.

Knights7d

Gamers11d

Thanks to everyone who participated in the vote this time round.

Reminder to Vote for the Best and Worst of Summer 2017

summer 2017

This is just a reminder post for those who may have missed it last week. The poll is open and I’d love to know your choices for the best and worst of the season.  Also, please share as the more the merrier. The poll will remain open until October 2 and results will be released soon after.

For the best of Summer 2017: as always, by best I am merely asking for the show you found the most entertaining. It does not actually need to be technically proficient or a masterpiece, just fun to watch and something that you eagerly looked forward to each week. If you want to give your reasons, please leave a comment.

Secondly, we have the worst of the Summer Season. While it might be fun to slam shows just for existing, I’d like to ask that we keep to shows you actually watched the majority of and they just didn’t get any better or do anything recommendable. So while the result may not actually be the worst show out there, it should reflect the worst show that people actually watched.

Thanks for your votes and again, if you ‘d like to tell us what you voted for an why, leave a comment and we can get the conversation going.

The Best and Worst Anime of Summer 2017 Poll

summer 2017

We’re at that time of the season again and while I know a lot of shows are still ongoing I am calling for votes to start for the best and worst of the season. Like last season you are allowed to vote for more than one show and you can write in a title if I left it off the list (totally by mistake, of course).

Voting will close on the 2 of October so please share and I can’t wait to find out what people have loved and hated this season.

First up, the best of the Summer Season. As always, by best I am merely asking for the show you found the most entertaining. It does not actually need to be technically proficient or a masterpiece, just fun to watch and something that you eagerly looked forward to each week. The Worst of Spring 2017

akashic12c

Yesterday I posted the results of The Best of Spring 2017 poll, so if you missed the post be sure to check it out and let me know what your favourite show was. Here though, we celebrate those lesser titles that just didn’t quite hit the mark.

My Least Favourite Show

Chosen only from shows that I watched from beginning to end during the Spring 2017 season, this show gets the title of worst (even though there were worse shows, I just didn’t finish watching them). I’m giving it to Akashic Records of a Bastard Magical Instructor.

Akashic9

I might point out that there were actually some good moments and ideas in this show, however it was more I tolerated watching the rest to get to those points rather than actually enjoying watching the show. I’d love to give the title to something like Sword Oratoria, but I dropped it.

My Least Favourite Character

It has to be Glenn Radar. I genuinely hated him from start to finish in his series and any time it looked like maybe they might help him turn around and become somewhat decent, he would do something so scummy that it would make me despise him yet again.

Akashic11d

Glenn actively makes you hate him in the first episode. He does after all have to live up to the title of Bastard Magical Instructor, the issue is that after they’ve established that he then see-saws from caring mentor to scummy drop kick in the space o two lines of dialogue for the rest of the series and you just cannot take him seriously as an instructor.

My Least Favourite Story

This one goes to The Silver Guardian. There were a few moments where it looked like this show would get itself together but it really was just a mess of ideas that never really seemed to progress sensibly.

Silver9

By the end of this season we still don’t know the villain’s motive for kidnapping Riku Rei or why she’s suddenly donning a Princess Leia rip-off costume and seemingly joining them. Nor do we have any idea how Suigin is going to become that amazing fighter we saw in episode one given he still hasn’t actually done anything in the game of note. Basically, things happen and we keep moving forward but the reason for anything is unclear so you really don’t have any reason to care.

My Least Favourite Opening Theme

Early in the season I’d have given this to Attack on Titan but that theme actually grew on me by the end of the series so now I’m kind of stumped as to what my least favourite opening theme was. I’m going to give it to Sagrada Reset because I basically end up skipping it most weeks because I’m just not interested in it.

Sagrada11b

Though, I think if this was finished the whole show might have gotten nominated for my least favourite of the season.

My Least Favourite Visuals

Another tough one and I’m going to have to give it to Granblue Fantasy. I know lots of people really liked how this looked but I found it really unappealing to look at and I really didn’t like how the characters moved a lot of the time. Admittedly, The Silver Guardian is probably uglier to look at and I know The Laughing Salesman is, but with both of those I kind of felt the visuals added something to the overall feel of the show, whereas Granblue was just kind of there.

Granblue3b

Again, there were some good moments in the series but overall I think it was the show that appealed least visually to me.

Reader’s Choice – Worst Anime of Spring 2017

Here it is:

This one was never close. Clockwork Planet was leading from beginning to end and to be honest, given I dropped it during the first episode, I was not in any way surprised by this result (other than apparently 13 people who voted actually watched it through to the end).

Okay, your turn to tell us what you thought the worst of the season was and why.
