The Best of Winter 2017

Earlier today, I shared the Worst of Winter 2017 (both my opinion and the view of the readers). If you didn’t check it out, make sure you have a look later and let me know your view. Meanwhile, this post is celebrating all the good things that happened during the 2017 Winter season.

My Favourite Show

Pretty straight forward category. I had to have watched the show all the way through and I had to have loved watching it. There are only 2 shows this season that I nominated as being a must watch in my weekly overviews and choosing between them is really hard at the moment and I reserve the right to change my mind later in the year after I rewatch both as to which is actually my favourite. But for now I’m giving the award to…

ACCA.

ACCA11b

I really had a lot of fun with this show, though there is definitely a fear that it won’t hold up under a rewatch because a lot of the fun came from never knowing quite where it was going next.

My Favourite Character

This was a really hard choice because there were quite a few characters that I really loved spending time with this season, even if the show they were in wasn’t doing much for me. I did notice going through my notes from all the shows I watched this season that there are very few female characters of note from the season. Possibly that’s because of the shows I ended up following but even those that had female characters didn’t really seem to do much with them.

Anyway, not the point. My favourite character from Winter 2017 was…

Rei Kiriyama from March Comes in Like a Lion.

march14e

I loved Rei and found him almost instantly relatable and I really loved watching him struggle and slowly grow but remain true to who he was (again, I had a hard time deciding between Rei and Jean from ACCA but Rei had quite a bit more development and twice as many episodes to win me over).

My Favourite Story

Obviously ACCA but given I gave that best anime I’m going to look at my next favourite story from the season. And I know this one is going to make some people raise an eyebrow but my next favourite story from the season came from…

Chain Chronicle.

chain5b

Possibly this is a sad criticism on the quality of the narratives this season (or my taste in stories depending on how you view it) but Chain Chronicle managed to build from a pretty good opening, through some basic world building, a couple of obvious twists, to a final conflict without tripping itself up, losing momentum, or doing anything that might make you question the story (though plenty of questions about the originality and execution at times). The other show I considered here was Spiritpact but the beginning of that story was far too rocky for it to be seriously nominated even if the end of the show was pretty magnificent.

My Favourite Opening Theme

Boy I’m glad I didn’t exclude it because it was my choice for best show…

Definitely ACCA.

ACCA11d

This opening theme is a fantastic fit for the show and just fun to listen to, accompanied by highly relevant and interesting visuals. Not once did I skip the opening and I certainly went back and watched it a couple of times after I was finished some episodes.

My Favourite Visuals

Winter 2017 didn’t have quite the plethora of visually appealing shows that previous season have had so the choice here is pretty obvious…

March Comes in Like a Lion.

march6b

While there are certainly shows with better character designs and better animation, March consistently delivered interesting and memorable visuals that added to the overall depth of the viewing experience. Couldn’t ask for much more from a story.

Reader’s Choice – Best Anime of 2017

Here it is:

Best Winter 2017

And yep,  March Comes in Like a Lion won. Possibly because I forgot to include Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju a fact which has been pointed out to me a number of times (that was actually an honest mistake as I thought I’d covered most of the anime people had been talking about whether I’d watched them through or not but I missed one). However, from the choices available March won.

march16

Of course Dragon Maid and Scum’s Wish both made a decent showing here and I knew before I started this that ACCA wouldn’t win a popularity poll given it really isn’t the kind of show that everyone is going to love.

Okay, these were my choices for favourite of the season so now I’d love to know yours. Feel free to share in the comments below and I’d love to know the reasons for your choices.

With that I’m leaving Winter 2017 behind and I’m now ready to face the Spring 2017 anime season.

The Worst of Winter 2017

Later today my Best of Winter post will come out and I’ll celebrate all those wonderful moments that got people talking (or at least entertained me during the past three months). But that is not his post. This post shares the worst and the lowest moments of the season as well as the reader’s choice for worst anime of Winter 2017.

My Least Favourite Show

Chosen only from shows that I watched from beginning to end during the Winter 2017 season (or completed in 2017 if they carried over from the previous season), this is the show that I cringed at the thoughts of watching but still managed to string me along with the faintest of hopes that eventually it would reveal something of note.

Yep, Hand Shakers.

hand1b

And no, it never did produce anything of note other than just how awful it was. Then again, anyone who has been following my blog is not even remotely surprised by this.

It should probably be noted that I literally hated everything about this show, however, in order not to let Hand Shakers get a big head by letting it take out every worst of category, I’ve pretty much excluded it from this point forward.

My Least Favourite Character

So, this had to be someone I bothered to remember but I actively disliked them as a character (so not just because they were a villain). And once again, I had to have finished watching the show so all the characters from Fuuka were removed from potential nomination because otherwise my decision would have been easily made.

I’m kind of going to have to go with Chuta from elDLIVE.

eldlive1

I really wanted to see him grow as a character and I did enjoy the few kind of moments of growth he got, but he pretty much instantly regressed right after and given they are playing his insecurities for laughs it really doesn’t have quite the same appeal as some other emotionally damaged characters this season.

My Least Favourite Story

Again, I had to have finished the story to make this decision so Iron Blooded Orphans Season 2 and Zestiria are momentarily given a reprieve as neither of them have actually finished, though both would have been contenders given their season 2 plots have mostly just gone through the motions and added little of significance. And on that theme we have the winning anime:

Blue Exorcist Season 2

blue32

All build up and hints at later plot threads but the plot delivered in this season is strictly side-story material and the final villain is all but inconsequential (and treated as such). Basically, if you have been reading the source material, you might get a lot out of this in terms of the set up for later events, but if you view this just as an anime season and ask it to stand on its own two feet in terms of plot, its going to fail miserably.

My Least Favourite Opening Theme and Visuals

Okay, these categories are only combined because the answer was one and the same. Not a lot to explain about the category other than this is an opening theme I couldn’t stomach listening to and visuals that were just hideous to look at (and I already excluded Hand Shakers from nomination).

I give this dubious honour to Spiritpact.

spiritpact2c

As much as I ended up enjoying the show by the mid-season point, the opening was terrible as were the visuals. While the visuals improved in the second half, there were still some really questionable choices and to be honest the whole show would benefit from a total remake as the story is actually kind of good once you get into it.

Reader’s Choice – Worst Anime of 2017

Here it is:

Hand Shakers, you did it again.

Admittedly, there was a pretty short time frame on this poll and Fuuka was definitely rallying there at the end so maybe if I’d left the poll open a bit longer we’d have a slightly different result.

Now, I’ve had my say on the worst of Winter 2017. What do you think? Who would you have nominated for worst character? Which show had the worst opening, visuals, or storyline? Share your opinion in the comments below and be sure to check out the best of post later today.

Winter 2017 Final List

As the title says, this is my final list for the Winter 2017 season. This was not an amazing season of anime for me. Lots of rom-coms and slice of life shows that just didn’t do much for me (though I’ve enjoyed shows in both of these genres previously), a few sequels that didn’t manage to hold up to the first seasons, and then just some passably entertaining shows. Still, I’ve enjoyed discussing these shows with the blogging community and I’m certainly looking forward to the Spring 2017 season. And while I know a couple of shows have yet to close for the season, this is my final list for Winter 2017.

As always, I would love to know your thoughts on the shows so let me know what ended up being your best and worst for the season.

yuri10d

Must Watch

  • ACCA (Finished)
  • March Comes in Like a Lion (Finished)

I think ACCA is going to stay on top (at least while they are both so fresh in my mind) simply because it has decidely resolved its story whereas March Comes in Like a Lion is still a work in progress, despite having twice as many episodes. That said, while ACCA is the show I’m choosing as more entertaining now, I get the distinct impression that in the long term, March is going to be the one I end up watching more times and enjoying more. Still, ACCA was pretty amazing to watch through.

days11

Usually Entertaining

  • Spiritpact (Finished)
  • Chain Chronicle (Finished)

Chain Chronicle never rose above what it started out as but that is fine. Fans of straight fantasy won’t have anything to complain about other than a lack of anything to distinguish this from any other sword and sorcery story. Looking forward to that moment in a few months where I just binge this in one day.

Exorcist18

Okay, I Guess

  • Iron Blooded Orphans (Episode 48)
  • Blue Exorcist (Finished)
  • Super Lovers (Finished)
  • elDLIVE (Finished)
  • Tales of Zestiria the X Season 2 (Episode 12)

Iron Blooded Orphans actually kind of reconnected with me this week. It isn’t really enough to make up for the last however long where I’ve just kind of been waiting for the inevitable end, but I genuinely felt for a character for the first time in awhile. Of course, I’m also looking forward to what comes next because I’m thinking this is going to explode now.

elDLIVE remained pretty ordinary until the end. It was never unwatchable but never rose beyond being kind of tolerable. A shame for a show with an interesting concept but it just never really rises above watchable.

Tales of Zestiria the X continues to just kind of meander along. Despite how difficult armatization with Dezel was, apparently Rose can now just armatize given she did it with Mikleo without any kind of discussion mid-battle. And now we’re going for a ‘by our powers combined’ kind of ending, which I guess I expected from the beginning but at this late stage just seems kind of like a tacked on power up given it wasn’t previously discussed as a possibility.

Tattoo6

They Made This

  • Hand Shakers (Finished)

Seriously, I need my head examined for not dropping Hand Shakers. That is all I have to say on the fact that I got through 12 episodes of that.

gangsta6

Tried and Dropped

  • Interviews with Monster Girls (Episode 10)
  • Akiba’s Trip (Episode 6)
  • Fuuka (Episode 5)
  • Trickster (Episode 13)
  • Gabriel DropOut (Episode 1)
  • Masamune-Kun’s Revenge (Episode 1)
  • Schoolgirl Strikers (Episode 1)
  • Seiren (Episode 1)
  • Saga of Tanya the Evil (Episode 1)
  • Chaos;Child (Episode 1 – five minutes in)

Winter 2017 done. Let’s see what Spring brings us.

The Worst Show of Winter 2017

If you didn’t see my poll for best show of Winter, I’ve added that poll at the bottom of this post as well. However, this post is primarily for voting for the worst show of Winter 2017. My criteria for worst show is pretty much bad story, bad characters, and/or boring (or you know, you just don’t like it).

As with the previous poll if you could spread the word I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks for your vote. I’ll release results soon, probably next week.

For those who missed it, here’s where you can vote for what you thought the best show was.

Vote For Your Favourite Anime of Winter 2017

Hey everyone, we’ve pretty much made it to the end of the Winter 2017 anime season. I’d love to know what your best of the season was (my only criteria for best is the show you found the most entertaining).

I decided this year that since I’ve actually started the blog at the beginning if I do best of each season, my end of year best of the year vote won’t need to have quite so many titles in it because I can narrow down the choices from these polls throughout the year. So please vote and let others know.

Thanks for your vote. I’ll release results probably next week.

Winter 2017 Week 10

And we’ve made it to week 10. Part of me is amazed that we’re finally here and part of me is wondering why I’m still watching some of the shows I started this season, but there’s still that end of season anticipation that is so much fun. Even if a show hasn’t been great there’s always kind of a hope that the finish will be amazing. Or at least amusing. Though in the case of Interviews with Monster Girls I finally gave up hoping this week.

Over on patreon, patrons will find my highlight of the week and my lesser top 5 list for the week. For everyone else you can find my screen cap of the week and my reviews of season 2 Super Lovers over on patreon.

As always, I would love to know your thoughts on the shows this season so please leave a comment below.

yuri10d

Must Watch

  • March Comes in Like a Lion (Episode 21)
  • ACCA (Episode 10)

March Comes in Like a Lion was truly great thisweek. It feels like such a perfect way to look at Rei’s emotional journey so far. I know there is one more episode but I would have been happy with him reuniting with the sister’s as an end point to be honest.

ACCA on the other hand slipped just a bit this week. It wasn’t a major issue but it certainly wasn’t the usual clever writing I’ve come to expect from the show and as a result has made it easier for me to split these two shows at the top of my watch list. We’ll see whether ACCA can pull off its ending.

days11

Usually Entertaining

  • Spiritpact (Finished)
  • Chain Chronicle (Episode 10)

Spiritpact – Apparently done at episode 10. Definitely the surprise of the season. This show went from disaster to compelling over its 10 episode run.

Chain Chronicle seems to have launched us toward a final battle though there are definitely a few issues with logic coming through at this point. Great fun to be had though.

Exorcist18

Okay, I Guess

  • Iron Blooded Orphans (Episode 46)
  • Blue Exorcist (Episode 36)
  • Super Lovers (Finished)
  • elDLIVE (Episode 10)
  • Tales of Zestiria the X Season 2 (Episode 10)

Iron Blooded Orphans brings us more space battle and then we get into mopey regret this week. This show seems determined to extinguish any kind of hope people might have for change. It will be interesting to see what message it ends on but at the moment it all looks kind of bleak (expected from Gundam really).

Blue Exorcist finally took out the impure king in a suitable display of blue flames. Not sure what they are aiming for next week and it still doesn’t fix the very slow climb to get to this point, but this episode was definitely getting closer to entertaining.

Super Lovers is being reviewed on my Patreon site (available to everyone).

elDLIVE was also pretty weak this round and given the show as a whole hasn’t been overly impressive, floundering at this point in the season doesn’t seem like a smart move.

Tales of Zestiria the X is desperately trying to wrap things up and bring everything together. The fact that some of the ideas are getting squashed is more or less inevitable given after doing very little for many episodes we’re not having an epic, fate-of-the-world kind of battle being set up. All and all, the fun this show gave us in season 1 has been utterly replaced by an increasing need to make excuses for charactisation, poor writing and pacing. No more excuses Zestiria.

Tattoo6

They Made This

  • Hand Shakers (Episode 10)

I think I expect nothing from Hand Shakers at this point and its certainly delivering on that nothing.

gangsta6

Tried and Dropped

  • Interviews with Monster Girls (Episode 10)
  • Akiba’s Trip (Episode 6)
  • Fuuka (Episode 5)
  • Trickster (Episode 13)
  • Gabriel DropOut (Episode 1)
  • Masamune-Kun’s Revenge (Episode 1)
  • Schoolgirl Strikers (Episode 1)
  • Seiren (Episode 1)
  • Saga of Tanya the Evil (Episode 1)
  • Chaos;Child (Episode 1 – five minutes in)

Finally gave up on Interviews with Monster Girls. It could be argued I should have just finished it given how far I’ve come, but to be honest I was just bored crazy during the first half of episode 10 and really there are so many other things I could do with my time. What really did it in was trying to write 100 words on it each week has become a challenge. Normally the challenge is cutting words out of episode reviews but with that one I just had nothing to say.

That’s week 10 done. What are you looking forward to in the Spring season?

Winter 2017 Week 9

Week 9 has come and gone and we see the shows that are finishing up launch their final few episodes. This should be a realy exciting time and a couple of shows seem to acknowledge that, but there’s a lot that are just going through the motions and may or may not deliver a satisfying conclusion. There’s a lot of shows I’ve dropped from Usually Entertaining to Okay, I Guess for the simple reason that ignoring the entertainment value of season 1, seeing how these shows have played out and what they are tipping for a conclusion, they just aren’t that entertaining. They aren’t bad enough to drop given attachment to the story and characters formed in season 1, but they aren’t good enough that I would tell someone with excitement that they exist.

If you missed my tweet, my apologies for being a little bit disappeared this week. I was crazy busy with work the first half and then got taken out by a fever for the second half of the week (which hasn’t helped the crazy busy work given I’ve had to take sick leave). I’m finally starting to recover though I’m still getting hit off and on with fever so I’m thinking I’ll be a little hit and miss for a few more days before I make a full recovery. Hopefully I’ll catch up with everyone else’s blogs then.

Over on patreon, patrons will find my highlight of the week and my lesser top 5 list for the week. Last weeks, I posted my responses to my genre challenge so if you missed it patrons, all of those posts should now be available. For everyone else you can find my screen cap of the week and my reviews of season 2 Super Lovers over on patreon.

As always, I would love to know your thoughts on the shows this season so please leave a comment below.

yuri10d

Must Watch

  • ACCA (Episode 9)
  • March Comes in Like a Lion (Episode 20)

These two shows are going out of their way to make it impossible to choose which is the better of them this season. I like them both, for different reasons, and both are unmissable for me at the moment.

days11

Usually Entertaining

  • Chain Chronicle (Episode 9)
  • Spiritpact (Episode 9)

Chain Chronicle continues to throw every fantasy stereotype at us but its doing it in an entertaining manner and wow its been awhile since I’ve seen a story so generically fantasy like that wasn’t a parody or sarcastically self-aware. Really enjoying this show.

Okay, I have no idea what Spiritpact is setting up at thisp oint, I just know that I want the next episode and I want it right now. So I’m guessing I’m enjoying it or at the very least I’m caught up in the story at this point.

Exorcist18

Okay, I Guess

  • Tales of Zestiria the X Season 2 (Episode 9)
  • Iron Blooded Orphans (Episode 45)
  • Blue Exorcist (Episode 35)
  • elDLIVE (Episode 9)
  • Super Lovers (Episode 9)
  • Interviews with Monster Girls (Episode 9)

Honestly, I’ve given Tales of Zestiria more than enough time to sort itself out this season and now I just have to acknowledge, it’s not that good. It’s finally heading somewhere, but this show is kind of just watchable at best at this point. There’s no depth and no real tension. You just kind of watch the pretty lights play out, smile at one or two bits of dialogue, and then the episode ends and you move on.

Iron Blooded Orphans is in exactly the same position as Zestiria. First season was pretty good (actually I really enjoyed it) but I’ve given season 2 more than enough time to figure itself out and really it hasn’t taken us anywhere of interest. Now its just watching the final bullets fly and I’ll guess we’ll see who is still breathing when we get to the end.

And Blue Exorcist finally remembered it can occasionally be cool, even if the bad guys are now mocking the exorcists for having committee meetings mid-fight. Alas, the start of what might be a decent fight sequence isn’t really enough to make up for 9 and a half episodes of mostly tedium so this series really isn’t moving on the list.

elDLIVE continues to be kind of okay with a few moments of great in amongst a lot of ordinary. Again, perfectly watchable but nothing really to get excited over.

Super Lovers is being reviewed on my Patreon site (available to everyone).

Interviews with Monster Girls remains much the same as always. Actually, the first half of this week’s episode was pretty good, then we returned to business as usual.

Tattoo6

They Made This

  • Hand Shakers (Episode 9)

I wish they would stop trying to make me feel sympathetic for those that lose in this show. Given they go all out to defeat their enemy, once they are beaten they try to make us feel for their loss but it is all back to front. If I didn’t care about them before they lost I’m not going to care after they lose.

gangsta6

Tried and Dropped

  • Akiba’s Trip (Episode 6)
  • Fuuka (Episode 5)
  • Trickster (Episode 13)
  • Gabriel DropOut (Episode 1)
  • Masamune-Kun’s Revenge (Episode 1)
  • Schoolgirl Strikers (Episode 1)
  • Seiren (Episode 1)
  • Saga of Tanya the Evil (Episode 1)
  • Chaos;Child (Episode 1 – five minutes in)

Week 9 over. Truthfully, which anime is likely to be your worst of the season that you didn’t drop?

Winter 2017 Week 8

Week 8 and things are heating up in some shows as we close in on the end of the season. I’m genuinely going to be sad to see March Comes in Like a Lion come to an end. I really enjoy waking up on Sunday to a new episode of it. ACCA I’m looking forward to the resolution of. I’ll miss this show but I’m happy they don’t seem to be unnecessarily stringing out the content and it feels like it is coming to a resolution. The other shows this season I’m reasonably indifferent to at this point in terms of whether they end or continue. It’s kind of sad but true.

Over on patreon, patrons will find my highlight of the week and my lesser top 5 list for the week. Remember also, I’m posting my responses to the genre challenge I made over the next week. For everyone else you can find my screen cap of the week and my reviews of season 2 Super Lovers over on patreon.

As always, I would love to know your thoughts on the shows this season so please leave a comment below.

yuri10d

Must Watch

  • ACCA (Episode 8)
  • March Comes in Like a Lion (Episode 19)

As ACCA starts pulling everything together it is moving from being interesting and compelling to being something really great. Even an episode that was pretty much entirely backstory felt meaningful and it felt like it appeared exactly when it needed to. I’m really loving watching this show. The reason I’ve moved it above March is because there’s more balance. March I’m really loving for the characters and visuals but there really isn’t much in the way of plot. ACCA has taken a bit longer to draw us into the characters but everything is coming together with this show now.

March Comes in Like a Lion really gave us a strong episode this week. In terms of story it was very quiet but the characters and visuals did everything they needed to. This show continues to be quietly impressive.

days11

Usually Entertaining

  • Chain Chronicle (Episode 8)
  • Spiritpact (Episode 8)
  • Tales of Zestiria the X Season 2 (Episode 8)
  • Iron Blooded Orphans (Episode 44)

Chain Chronicle continues to be fairly standard but fairly entertaining fantasy. I could be super critical of a whole bunch of things but really it is accomplishing what it is setting out to do and it doesn’t pretend to be anything more than it is.

Spiritpact has jumped up this list again. Mostly because if you were to ask me which episode I was most looking forward to the next part of, it easily beats all the sequel series this season has rolled out. There’s definitely still issues with the show in terms of production but the characters and story get better each episode and I’m genuinely caught up in the events at the moment, unlike the other shows where I feel like I’m waiting for them to stop stuffing around and do something.

Tales of Zestiria finally gave us an actually fun episode and remembered there was supposed to actually be a villain somewhere to fight. Amazing how much better things get when there is a point to them. Anyway, let’s hope we can now end the season strongly but really there’s no saving the poor start to this season and the rewatch value up to this point is nil.

Iron Blooded Orphans gives us more foreshadowing of a very bad ending looming over most of the characters. Seriously, is anyone going to be alive at the end of this?

Exorcist18

Okay, I Guess

  • Blue Exorcist (Episode 34)
  • elDLIVE (Episode 8)
  • Super Lovers (Episode 7)
  • Interviews with Monster Girls (Episode 8)

Blue Exorcist has fallen to just being okay because this season has just not delivered. We finally get into a fight and it isn’t the fast paced fun adventure of season 1 but another talky choppy mess of scenes where nothing is given the attention it deserves and the enemy is all but forgotten in most of the exchanges.

elDLIVE remains… odd? Strange? Occasionally really good with moments of eye-rolling idiocy mixed in? It’s hard to know given from one section to the next of a single episode I can be having a great time to being annoyed with this show. The second half this week was excellent and then they all enrolled in school at the end. Seriously? We’re going there?

Super Lovers is being reviewed on my Patreon site (available to everyone).

Interviews with Monster Girls just continues to do its thing. I’m neither particularly interested or particularly annoyed with this at this point.

Tattoo6

They Made This

  • Hand Shakers (Episode 8)

There’s really nothing left to say about this anime at this point. It hasn’t got better or worse (though my tolerance for some of its nonsense is getting lower).

gangsta6

Tried and Dropped

  • Akiba’s Trip (Episode 6)
  • Fuuka (Episode 5)
  • Trickster (Episode 13)
  • Gabriel DropOut (Episode 1)
  • Masamune-Kun’s Revenge (Episode 1)
  • Schoolgirl Strikers (Episode 1)
  • Seiren (Episode 1)
  • Saga of Tanya the Evil (Episode 1)
  • Chaos;Child (Episode 1 – five minutes in)

Week 8 has drawn to a close. Has you opinion changed about any of the shows so far this season?

Winter 2017 Week 7

From following Twitter, it definitely seems there’s a lot of mid-season dropping going on with people getting half-way through a show that kind of looked like it had potential but then failing to deliver. Even people who don’t normally drop mid-season are finding themselves making the choice to let something go. That said, there’s a lot of praise out there for some shows and most people have found something to celebrate from the Winter Anime season. For me, that’s ACCA and March Comes in Like a Lion. While these shows may not be my favourites ever with neither falling into a genre that I would normally claim to love, they are most definitely holding my interest and delivering some fairly solid storytelling.

Over on patreon, patrons will find my highlight of the week and my lesser top 5 list for the week. Everyone else can access reviews of the Scum’s Wish manga and Super Lovers season 2 episode reviews so be sure to check them out.

As always, I would love to know your thoughts on the shows this season so please leave a comment below.

yuri10d

Must Watch

  • March Comes in Like a Lion (Episode 18)
  • ACCA (Episode 7)

Episode 18 of March Comes in Like a Lion wasn’t that great for me with some of its visuals, but the series as a whole remains pretty solid and, to be honest, I’m in love with the character journey at this point.

ACCA episode 7 continues to surprise, this time seemingly going for the straight forward approach. Refreshing after so much intrigue and while it feels like things have come together there’s still a lot of nagging questions.

days11

Usually Entertaining

  • Chain Chronicle (Episode 7)
  • Iron Blooded Orphans (Episode 43)
  • Blue Exorcist (Episode 33)
  • Tales of Zestiria the X Season 2 (Episode 7)
  • Spiritpact (Episode 7)

While I’m not going to call Chain Chronicle a must watch, it is definitely my favourite popcorn entertainment watch of the season. While ACCA and March make me think and listen to the dialogue a second time and flick through scenes looking for visual cues I may have missed, Chain Chronicle is just fun to sit back and watch unfold in all its typical fantasy tropes. No, I won’t make an argument that this is an amazing story, but it is exactly what I want most Sunday’s when I’m trying to switch off.

Any hope of Orphans reigniting some of season 1’s flair for a strong finish is pretty much killed at this point. Yes, we’ll probably get a great final battle but really, that was all that Fareed’s plan had to it? You would think after keeping us in the dark this long it would be a reveal of actual value.

Blue Exorcist now has us all in the middle of a fight and yet we still are having to endure lengthy conversations and dialogue that goes around in circles. Admittedly, there was definitely a sense of urgency this week which has been lacking so far, but this still feels like they are stretching a little material a very long way.

Tales of Zestiria is being put on notice that if it doesn’t start bringing something more to the table then I am going to drop this down to just okay. Season 2 has continually not been as entertaining as season 1, and this is definitely starting to kill a lot of my desire to continue with this story (and seriously, it’s a fantasy with dragons, I should love this and yet it just hasn’t been delivering anything this season of note).

Spiritpact thickens the plot and maybe Keika won’t be so useless after this episode (though I won’t hold my breath on that). This one is the surprisingly improved show of the season given the incredibly rough start it had.

Okay, I Guess

  • elDLIVE (Episode 7)
  • Super Lovers (Episode 7)
  • Interviews with Monster Girls (Episode 7)

elDLIVE gives us some great lines this week and a few really good moments. Then it kind of dissolves into a friends forever and hope wins kind of thing. That said, this show does keep building on what it has so if it gets enough episodes could definitely end up being something.

Super Lovers is being reviewed on my Patreon site (available to everyone).

Interviews with Monster Girls remains watchable and that is the highest level of recommendation this show can get off of me at this point. Even if it has a brilliant finish it is just too flat, too lame, or too dull too often that the few sparks of creative or interesting cannot compensate for it.

Tattoo6

They Made This

  • Hand Shakers (Episode 7)

Hand Shakers is really wanting to cement its position as worst anime of the year early on and its succeeding admirably. While a lot of people took one look at the visuals of this show and declared it dead in the water, those of us who have continued have found a whole slew of things completely dreadful about this show. Every single thing that could have been interesting or helped lift this show has been squandered and all we have at this point a selection of screenshots showing the many and creative ways we can jam the word mesh into a sentence. Still not dropping it but only sticking to it because I am stubborn.

gangsta6

Tried and Dropped

  • Akiba’s Trip (Episode 6)
  • Fuuka (Episode 5)
  • Trickster (Episode 13)
  • Gabriel DropOut (Episode 1)
  • Masamune-Kun’s Revenge (Episode 1)
  • Schoolgirl Strikers (Episode 1)
  • Seiren (Episode 1)
  • Saga of Tanya the Evil (Episode 1)
  • Chaos;Child (Episode 1 – five minutes in)

Week 7 over. So far, what has surprised you this season?

Winter 2017 Week 6

Week 6 and we’re half-way through any anime that are running 12 episodes. I’d hesitate to say that this is a terrible season given there are some good shows running and a few that I haven’t been able to watch at all, but really, I think this is probably my worst season for dropping things mid-way through and there is very little I’m interested in picking up that’s actually out on the serives I use.

Over on patreon, patrons will find my highlight of the week and my lesser top 5 list for the week. Everyone else can access reviews of the Scum’s Wish manga and Super Lovers season 2 episode reviews so be sure to check them out.

As always feel free to share your thoughts on this season in the comments below.

Must Watch

  • March Comes in Like a Lion (Episode 17)
  • ACCA (Episode 6)

There’s very little to say about March Comes in Like a Lion except that it continues to be an impressive story to watch unfold and at this point I’m completely caught up in the lives of the characters.

ACCA is really doing my head in as I try to figure out what the end game is. The writing is good enough that it doesn’t feel like it is pointlessly stringing me along but at the same time I’m still pretty much in the dark about how this will all play out. Really loving this series so far.

Usually Entertaining

  • Chain Chronicle (Episode 6)
  • Iron Blooded Orphans (Episode 42)
  • Tales of Zestiria the X Season 2 (Episode 6)
  • Blue Exorcist (Episode 32)
  • Spiritpact (Episode 6)

Chain Chronicles continues to deliver a standard but fairly entertaining fantasy adventure and one that seems to have a bit more weight and bite than Tales  of Zestiria at the moment.

Iron Blooded Orphans is well and truly on track for a miserable ending but I don’t think I ever expected a happy ending for the cast so I’ll be really surprised when I find out who survives (if anyone) when we do make it to the end of this.

Tales of Zestiria the X seems to feel like it is finally starting (which you know only 6 episodes into season 2 isn’t bad). We’re finally done with Rose’s side story and now she’s officially joined team Sorey so apparently we can now go and rescue the Princess. I am enjoying this despite the sarcasm.

Blue Exorcist saved itself from dropping this week with a few touching scenes and finally the promise of some action (though we aren’t quite there yet). Still, I’m not terribly impressed with how this show is going and its going to have to work hard to really come back from that slow start.

Spiritpact gives us a time-frame because apparently everything has so far happened within a week. It also continues to build on the two main characters with far less silliness than the early episodes. Really enjoying this over the last couple of weeks.

Exorcist18

Okay, I Guess

  • elDLIVE (Episode 6)
  • Super Lovers (Episode 6)
  • Interviews with Monster Girls (Episode 6)

elDLIVE continues to become more interesting (amazingly enough with Misuzu sitting out most of the last episode all of the characters felt like they suddenly had more personality). I’d really like to see this show move up as there’s plenty of good material here but at the moment its still kind of finding itself.

Super Lovers is being reviewed on my Patreon site (available to everyone).

Interviews with Monster Girls remains neither particularly good or bad and continues to roll along with very little happening. It works well enough but is hardly exciting.

They Made This

  • Hand Shakers (Episode 6)

Hand Shakers is the only anime I’m still watching that still fits the category. Most of the other shows I’ve stuck with have kind of found at least a mediocre level. Hand Shakers on the other hand just keeps making me ask ‘why’. Why do you exist? What were the writer’s thinking? It could get better but I’m thinking this is just going to limp along until the end of the season.

Tried and Dropped

  • Akiba’s Trip (Episode 6)
  • Fuuka (Episode 5)
  • Trickster (Episode 13)
  • Gabriel DropOut (Episode 1)
  • Masamune-Kun’s Revenge (Episode 1)
  • Schoolgirl Strikers (Episode 1)
  • Seiren (Episode 1)
  • Saga of Tanya the Evil (Episode 1)
  • Chaos;Child (Episode 1 – five minutes in)

Week 6 and which show do you think is going to be your show of the season?
