The Laughing Salesman Episode 3

salesman3b

Review:

While this show certainly has a clear formula, both of the stories this week seemed to have the salesman taking a far more active role in the character’s demise than in previous episodes where it seemed fate and natural consequence were the larger concerns. The first story takes a break from one thing though; the main character does no continuously drink himself senseless. What this means is, he inflicts all of his own troubles upon himself while sober and I’m not sure that’s much of an improvement. Then again, he’s a 27 year old living at home afraid of upsetting his mother by eating his girlfriend’s bento.

Salesman3

My sympathy for him as a character is limited. The second character for the first part of the story was actually someone who did garner a bit of sympathy. He had a thing for trains but wasn’t doing so well at work and the like.

Salesman3c

His overall dream of riding on the train isn’t overtly greedy or foolish and his achieving that dream through the Salesman is kind of nice. Of course, the blowing up at his boss and getting fired after that is more or less his own fault as is reboarding the train when he’s been told not to. So ultimately we fall into the same path as every other story so far.

Again, not spectacular but perfectly watchable stories this week.

The Laughing Salesman Episode 2

Review:

I’m not sure if the recurring theme in this story is alcoholism or ego. Regardless, this week we are introduced to another two customers (victims) of the salesman. The first is taken to the hot springs where he proceeds to get drunk and then more or less consents to cheating on his wife. The second involves an employee who quit because of his boss who then becomes a tyrant in his own right.

Salesman2b

The opening theme remains the strongest part of this show but the episode and the two stories are both perfectly watchable if not overly exciting.

The Laughing Salesman is available on Crunchyroll.

The Laughing Salesman Episode 1

salesman1b

Overview:

So we have a salesman who helps fulfill people’s wishes and we all know how that is going to end.

Review:

Salesman1

I checked this episode out of curiosity and was pleasantly surprised. The art is hideous and the animation questionable, the plot extremely predictable, and the episode being split into two different stories meant very limited characterisation. Really, there is little to recommend this but the format reminds me of those old TV shows where we meet someone with a weakness or a vice and grant them a wish with horrific results over and over again. Maybe this will do something more and develop the salesman or maybe it will remain strictly episodic; either way I’ll give it a few more episodes because it was enjoyable enough. Plus the opening theme is kind of entertaining which is more than I can say for most of the first episodes I’ve watched this week.

The Laughing Salesman is available on Crunchyroll.
