Summer 2016 Week 13

This is my last overview for Summer 2016. I know some shows still haven’t finished but next week I’ll be posting my first thoughts on the Autumn season shows as they start rolling out (though from the looks of Crunchyroll and AnimeLab I may be a little short of shows this season – I say that now but will have to reconsider once I see what actually gets released). That said, I will begin whole season reviews of the Summer shows in a few weeks (once I’ve had some time to gather my overall thoughts).

No real surprises in the order this week but some interesting conclusions (and non-conclusions) to some highly entertaining shows. I think that’s my main take-away from Summer. I enjoyed watching more shows than I did during the Spring season.

As always, I would love to hear your thoughts on the season below.

I Must Keep Watching

  • D.Gray-Man Hallow (Ep 13)
  • Alderamin on the Sky (Ep 12)
  • Tales of Zestiria (Ep 12)
  • Days (Ep 12 – No episode this week)

And D Gray Man was awesome until the end. I’ve loved being back in this world and now all I can say is I want more because we are still left without resolution. Let’s hope it isn’t 8 years this time.

Alderamin was not finished yet but with one episode to go it is fairly safe to say that this series needs a follow up. While watching Ikta manage a tactical retreat has been fun, it would be excellent to see how he follows this up. Admittedly they could still kill him off but that would seem to defy any of the narration we’ve had throughout the series about how amazing he was going to become.

Tales of Zestiria the X delivered a stunning lack of resolution but did bring the current battle to an end (of sorts). Objectively I know there are a lot of issues with this show however, I am really enjoying watching it week to week even when I’m being critical. I’m actually kind of looking forward to another season with these characters.

Still On My Radar

  • The Morose Mononokean (Ep 13)
  • Momokuri (Ep 26)
  • 91 Days (Ep 11)
  • Food Wars (Ep 13)
  • Cheer Boys (Ep 12)
  • Orange (Ep 13)

The Morose Mononokean continued right to the end at showing us an alright show but never tipped the scales toward becoming a great show. And while not every show needs to be great, this one just continued to feel lacking even while what it delivered was perfectly watchable entertainment.

Momokuri finished the way it started. Creepy but adorable simultaneously. This one is going to be hard to write a full review about but I’m kind of looking forward to reading over my impressions from the season and finalising my thoughts.

91 Days gave us a great second last episode. If the series had maintained its momentum from start to finish it would have been a must watch. Unfortunately all the ending is doing is making me wonder why it took so long for them to kick the story into gear.

Food Wars gave us a conclusion to the placement and all the characters came back to school but really this whole series has just been a bit of a let down after the manic energy of season 1. Still, it was worth watching the continuation of the cooking journey.

Cheer Boys left us on a fairly flat note but the series as a whole has been a delightfully empty piece of entertainment and other than an episode 5 recap I haven’t really got any complaints.

At last Orange is done. I feel this show would fair better with a binge watch rather than week to week, though even that may not remove some of the more frustrating aspects of watching the show. I guess the real issue is I’m not much for touching emotional teen drama and that is what this show drips with from start to finish.

  • Hitorinoshita (Ep 12)
  • Taboo Tattoo (Ep 12 – Finished last week)

MAL tells me Hitorinoshita is finished but you wouldn’t know it from watching the episode. After leaving us with questions all series they are going to finish it without really revealing anything (odd after two episodes of nearly continuous flashback that we still know almost nothing that we couldn’t have kind of figured out).

Summer 2016 Week 12

So here we are in the last weeks of the summer anime season. Some shows will be wrapping and others still have a week or two to go. That said, I am starting to check out the upcoming shows to see what I’ll be following in the Autumn Season (it is still weird reversing the seasons given Australia is heading into Spring).

As always, I would love to hear your thoughts on the season below.

I Must Keep Watching

  • D.Gray-Man Hallow (Ep 12)
  • Alderamin on the Sky (Ep 11)
  • Tales of Zestiria (Ep 11)
  • Days (Ep 12)

I’m still finding D Gray Man highly entertaining though a lot of what happened this episode was definitely only for the people who have a strong nostalgia lens on this series. People new to the show will probably just find it a set up for a future episode and miss a lot of the emotions that should be attached to this episode.

Alderamin was a little slower this week but we’ve got a clear path for the final few episodes to follow. I’m still genuinely loving this show but this episode, while necessary, was not the best.

Tales of Zestiria the X delivered a good lead up to a season finish but the whole affair has felt unnecessarily rushed. It really feels like the story and characters would have been better served with a less chaotic schedule as they went about saving the world.

Days was excessively slow this week but it kind of felt needed after the ongoing soccer game and it was nice to just focus on the characters and where they are sitting now. I’m still honestly surprised by how much I am enjoying this when realistically I should be over this by now.

Still On My Radar

  • The Morose Mononokean (Ep 12)
  • Momokuri (Ep 24)
  • 91 Days (Ep 10)
  • Food Wars (Ep 12)
  • Cheer Boys (Ep 11)
  • Orange (Ep 12)

I really enjoyed the Morose Mononokean this week. I still think this show could be better than it is but as a relaxing watch it has succeeded quite well.

The episodes of Momokuri this week weren’t as strong as the last two (given the story felt like a rerun) but the series as a whole has continued to surprise me given its slow and cutesy nature. I don’t know why this particular series of blushing teens has caught my fancy but I know it continues to amuse and entertain and I genuinely want the characters to continue to move on with their lives.

91 Days on the other hand made a strong come back this week after a middle of the season that was alright. That said, it doesn’t change my overall impression of the series. Strong start but then kind of ambled. I’m not really keen to rewatch this but I am looking forward to the final episode.

Food Wars was really enjoyable this week. It isn’t quite enough as I think back on the whole season to really move it up my list though. At no point in season 2 have I had even half the fun while watching season 1. A better character episode this week and enjoyable enough but this isn’t the must watch that the first season produced.

Cheer Boys continues its trend of feel good nonsense as we wrap up all remaining issues so now we can go to the competition and give it are all. Cue heavy amounts of it’s good to be in a team and working toward a goal is awesome mentality. I’m not actually criticising given that is what the show has been from the beginning, but it really did feel like they were bringing everything to a close this week.

If Orange wasn’t about to end I’d be more or less ready to let it go anyway. I really don’t care if they save Kakeru or not at this point and honestly Naho is such a nothing character it really does not matter who she ends up with or why. Now that any hope of a decent time travel explanation has been dashed and all we are left with is a very ordinary teen drama I’m done. Last episode here we come and then move on.

  • Hitorinoshita (Ep 11)
  • Taboo Tattoo (Ep 12)

Just please tell me Hitorinoshita is ending next week. We won’t have even half the answers we need for this to be¬†even pleasantly odd, it’s just going to¬†continue to be painful, but I’d really like it to end. If not, I’m pretty sure next week will be my last week doing a write up on it regardless.

And is Taboo Tattoo finished? MAL says yes but what’s with the preview for future events? Anyway, it was a disaster of a show and whether it is finished or not, I’m done.

I’ve really enjoyed the Summer Season (much more than Spring this year). Looking forward to the last episodes of these shows.

Summer 2016 Week 11

Week 11 and it is the home stretch. After last week’s rather ho-hum performance from so many shows, it seems like some of them were just saving up for this week. Other shows are taking the interesting approach (though one that is common in the anime world) of continuing to derail as the end draws near.

Just as a heads up, I’ll be travelling over the next week or so and while I’m mostly going to have internet access so mostly should continue posting without disruption, there may be some gaps or it may take me a little longer than normal to respond both here and on twitter.

As always, I would love to hear your thoughts on the season below.

I Must Keep Watching

  • D.Gray-Man Hallow (Ep 11)
  • Alderamin on the Sky (Ep 10)
  • Tales of Zestiria (Ep 1)
  • Days (Ep 11)

D Gray Man, I know I should gush about you every week but I just love watching this show so much. Great to see Lenalee back this week and some great plot reveals just make me want to watch it all the more.

Alderamin on the Sky is an anime that you need to check out if you have not started watching it yet this season. I normally do not recommend things prior to their completion but this one is worth getting on board with. It isn’t the most energetic action spectacle of all time but it is a nice bit of storytelling with some interesting characters and it just manages to balance all its elements in a way that makes it a very satisfying watch.

Tales of Zestiria the X continues to be an enjoyable fantasy. There are issues with plotting and the like but they aren’t distracting from the overall enjoyment I get from watching these characters go about their business so this one continues to be a great watch.

Days continues to surprise me. It’s spent three episodes on one soccer game and I still haven’t quit watching or wanted to drop it down. Logically I know there are a lot of issues with the show but I really want to see Tsukamoto continue to grow as a player.

Still On My Radar

  • The Morose Mononokean (Ep 11)
  • Momokuri (Ep 22)
  • 91 Days (Ep 9)
  • Food Wars (Ep 11)
  • Cheer Boys (Ep 10)
  • Orange (Ep 11)

The Morose Mononokean delivered a fairly good episode this week. Overall this series hasn’t been as good as I would have liked it to be but it is certainly a pleasant and enjoyable series to watch. I’m thinking it would be good to marathon on a rainy afternoon once it is done.

Momokuri is kind of my surprise for the second half of the season. It’s still a generic romance (with some creepy aspects thrown in hidden by overtly cute character designs and pastel colour schemes) but it has been consistent in delivering its story and characters. I find as the end of the Summer season get’s closer, I’m enjoying this more each week because I know what I’m going to get and it delivers.

It seems like 91 Days has finally come back to Avilio’s revenge and the episode felt a lot stronger because of it. If this can stay a focus for the next few episodes this might actually have a really interesting ending.

Food Wars picked up after leaving the election behind but with the focus on two characters I don’t much like (in addition to Soma) I still wasn’t really drawn in this week. Plot wise, I definitely preferred this.

Cheer Boys should be congratulated on it’s narrative choices this week. The show is still fairly average but continues to entertain.

Kakeru and Naho continue to annoy in Orange but this episode did do something right in the focus on Suwa and having the characters actually begin to question the logic of messing with the past. It’s the first time the show has really taken the time travel aspect seriously and it makes you wonder where they will go next with that (or will be back to high school drama).

hyouka-13-houtarou-alone-bored-happy-content

Not Dropped But Close

  • Hitorinoshita (Ep 10)
  • Taboo Tattoo (Ep 11)

These two are still competing for the bottom. Hitorinoshita is kind of holding on to its ‘not the worst thing I’m watching’ status but episode 10 was pretty appalling. That said, Taboo Tattoo continues to show us that it can become even more flat even while it seems like the events should be dramatic and interesting. This is a great lesson in what happens when you skip over character and plot development and opt for ‘isn’t this fight cool’ story development.

  • Ozmafia (Dropped at Ep 1)
  • Scar-red Riders XechS (Dropped at Ep 1)

The question becomes which show will have the best ending? Which shows won’t resolve? And which shows will just splutter quietly into the night?

Summer 2016 Week 10

Are you excited for the end of the season? So I know Days is continuing on, haven’t heard about the others but most things should start wrapping up soon. Let’s see what they can deliver in their final episodes.

Meanwhile, most of the shows I’ve been enjoying throughout this season delivered okay but not awesome episodes which meant viewing this week was a bit of a downer. Hoping they all pull up again next week and don’t crash and burn in the final.

As always, I would love to hear your thoughts on the season below.

I Must Keep Watching

  • D.Gray-Man Hallow (Ep 10)
  • Alderamin on the Sky (Ep 9)
  • Tales of Zestiria (Ep 9)
  • Days (Ep 10)

D Gray Man Hallow has continued to work really well for me. I know that some fans of the original have been disappointed and while there are changes (particularly in appearance) this show has consistently delivered a story that hits the right notes and reminds me why I loved this series in the first place. This week was no exception.

Alderamin actually wasn’t that great this week. Overall, the sereis is still quite strong but this last episode left me fairly indifferent. Hoping it picks up again next episode or I may need to start re-evaluating where it is sitting in the list.

Tales of Zestiria the X was okay but I just kept feeling like they wanted me to be more excited about the battles this week than I was. This wasn’t a bad episode by any means, but it just wasn’t amazing.

Days also delivered a ho-hum kind of episode as we continue the final game between Seiseki and Saku. Not enough to drop categories but enough that I’m putting it on notice. I don’t much like sports anime in the first place so I’m really not going to leave this in the must keep watching category if we are going to watch a single game over multiple episodes.

akagami2b-2b062b-2

Still On My Radar

  • The Morose Mononokean (Ep 10)
  • Momokuri (Ep 20)
  • Cheer Boys (Ep 9)
  • Orange (Ep 10)
  • Food Wars (Ep 10)
  • 91 Days (Ep 8)

While the Morose Mononokean was a bit stronger this week, the plot is definitely not in a hurry to go anywhere. Which is fine and all but it means it is becoming one of those shows I can watch or not. This would definitely probably go better as a binge watch on a rainy afternoon than in week to week increments.

Momokuri seems to be getting serious about the main relationship and managed to pull of a fairly decent episode. While the series as a whole has a lot of padding, it’s those touching moments, or the moments when the characters respond genuinely to a situation, that keep drawing me back into this show.

Cheer Boys got around to Kazu’s inner pain, only we saw that one coming a mile away so it didn’t quite have the impact they might have wanted. It was a very ordinary kind of episode really.

At last Orange got to the relay but now it really feels like they are setting up the happiness before the disaster. I think I really disengaged from caring about the characters about four episodes ago and since then it’s been hard to really care about where they are going.

Food Wars finally completed the Autumn Election and it is about time. Now I’m hoping we can get some more screen time with some of the less talented but more interesting cast members.

91 Days wasn’t bad this week, and the end of the episode was kind of awesome, but I just can’t help thinking that the show is lacking something.

  • Hitorinoshita (Ep 9)
  • Taboo Tattoo (Ep 10)

Hitorinoshita delivered another fairly ordinary episode this week. Mostly because we spent the entire time still trying to rescue Soran who was more or less on his way out the door anyway. Oh well.

And Taboo Tattoo has officially become the train wreck I just haven’t stopped watching for this season. There is always one show I hold onto for too long, hoping it get’s better.

Summer 2016 Week 9

Here we are in week 9. This week has been a real mixed bag with some shows dropping the ball entirely (or tossing it away) while other shows have really gone forward full steam ahead. I’m starting to look now to see what is ending in a few weeks and what is continuing but there are a couple of shows that I won’t mind seeing finish sooner rather than later at this point. I’m also now down to only 4 series in my must watch.

As always, I would love to hear your thoughts on the season below.

I Must Keep Watching

  • D.Gray-Man Hallow (Ep 9)
  • Alderamin on the Sky (Ep 8)
  • Days (Ep 9)
  • Tales of Zestiria (Ep 8)

D Gray Man continues to be my favourite watch (and yes I am aware that it may not be the best show of the season but it is the one I am loving the most).

Alderamin on the Sky delivers another solid episode. It’s moving slower now but with established characters and a fairly clear direction, this is still a really enjoyable show to watch.

Days wasn’t as strong this week as we spent most of the episode watching the game and it didn’t finish by the end of the episode. I get that this is a pretty major game but one of the things I’ve liked about this series is that even though it is an anime about sport they haven’t made us watch episodes of people playing sport.

Tales of Zestiria the X is still pretty interesting. I’m probably enjoying more because I really like fantasy and its been awhile since I’ve seen something with a dragon that has been even vaguely watchable. I get the feeling that this is a show that really shouldn’t be scrutinised too closely because it just won’t hold up.

akagami2b-2b062b-2

Still On My Radar

  • The Morose Mononokean (Ep 9)
  • Cheer Boys (Ep 8)
  • Orange (Ep 9)
  • Food Wars (Ep 9)
  • Momokuri (Ep 18)
  • 91 Days (Ep 7.5)

Okay, The Morose Mononokean delivered a fairly ho-hum kind of episode. It tried to bring some emotion to the scene but it just didn’t really work and to be honest the whole episode felt filler worthy. While I really held onto this one with high hopes because it was generally sweet and kind of reminded me of Natsume Yuujinchou, this series has just consistently failed to deliver a solid performance. There are definitely good moments and it is certainly watchable, but it is also going to be fairly forgettable unless they do something amazing in the next couple of episodes.

Cheer Boys continues to be light and entertaining. They resolved some of their issues and are driving toward their next challenge so the feel good continues even if it lacks depth.

Orange gave us another significantly weaker episode. This second half of the season is seriously faltering. It just can’t hold up visually or dramatically to the first half and it seems like the story has all but run it’s course. That isn’t to say it couldn’t recover from this but this week was disappointing.

Food Wars also gave us a fairly lack lustre follow up. Last week I liked because it was the set-up for the finals but this cooking match was kind of dull. It doesn’t measure up to some of the previous efforts either visually or in terms of excitement. I’m not sure I even care who wins (which of course has not yet been revealed).

Momokuri resumes being adorable this week while still not really doing anything new. The thing with this show is, if it just stopped, I probably wouldn’t care, but I do enjoy watching the episodes when they come out.

91 Days recapped the story. Thanks but no thanks.

  • Taboo Tattoo (Ep 9)

Hitorinoshita… Well, it’s kind of continuing on. I’m sure there’s a point in here somewhere. There’s some fight sequences? Okay. I don’t know. Stuff is still happening, everyone still wants Soran, and to be honest it doesn’t really feel like anything is going to come together in this anime any time soon.

Taboo Tattoo… Flash back to a more interesting character? Doesn’t that just make us realise how rubbish the rest of the show has been?

Is it just me or has this summer season flown by really fast?

Summer 2016 Week 8

Here’s week 8. Wow, I can’t believe how fast this season is flashing by. It really feels like it was just yesterday when I was trying out the first episode of so many anime and having to decide what to drop and what to follow. I can’t say I made the best choice in holding on to either Taboo Tattoo or Hitorinoshita this long, but that’s hindsight for you. What are you still watching that you should have dropped?

Apologies for earlier this week when I lost internet access. If I haven’t dropped by your blog, let me know and I’ll catch up.

As always, I would love to hear your thoughts on the season below.

I Must Keep Watching

  • D.Gray-Man Hallow (Ep 8)
  • Alderamin on the Sky (Ep 7)
  • Days (Ep 8)
  • Tales of Zestiria (Ep 7)
  • The Morose Mononokean (Ep 8)

D Gray Man Hallow is telling a compelling story and packing an emotional punch (at least for fans of the show who are already in love with the characters – hard to tell how anyone else would take the last three episodes). I’m loving it and while I don’t feel the wait was worth it (that was a long break), I am so happy this is back.

Alderamin is just a good anime. That’s really all there is to it. It isn’t flash and it isn’t trying to do anything particularly amazing but it is telling its story about its characters and it is doing it really well. For a military/fantasy anime it is one of the better ones in terms of not going for spectacle and just getting the fundamentals right. While I understand some people are finding it a bit slow, I’m genuinely loving watching this anime.

Days continues to charm and I just found out it’s hanging around for the Autumn season so I’ll get to see whether an anime about soccer (football) can actually keep me hooked that long. Seems like it so far.

Tales of Zestiria took us back to Sorey and friends and actually did a pretty good job of picking up where we left off. Honestly, as an anime there are a lot of issues here, and as I’m not a fan of the game when I do my overall review I will probably be pretty critical of some aspects, however, it is a lot of fun to watch.

Lastly, The Morose Mononokean delivered a so-so episode. Another one like this and I may drop this to the On My Radar group.

akagami2b-2b062b-2

Still On My Radar

  • Orange (Ep 8)
  • Food Wars (Ep 8)
  • 91 Days (Ep 7)
  • Cheer Boys (Ep 7)
  • Momokuri (Ep 16)

Yep, I dropped Orange down here. Sorry to the fans, but Naho is driving me crazy and the overly contrived plot this week was the final straw. While I am not tempted to drop this, I’m also not mad keen on waiting for the next episode any more.

Food Wars delivered a really strong episode but I’m still not moving this up to the Must Watch because too much of this season has been the Autumn Election with very little else happening. I loved this week though, as it gave us more interactions with other characters as we were preparing for the next match rather than straight into it.

91 Days continues to be watchable but not particularly impressive. I feel that without a substantial drive toward a climax this show will ultimately be very forgettable for me. That isn’t to say it isn’t good. The storyline is fine and so are the characters. But it just feels that after a very solid and impressive opening the anime has been content to go through the usual family conflicts and hasn’t really delivered anything particularly noteworthy. Should I discount a show because it didn’t live up to its first episode? Probably not, and I am still watching and enjoying 91 Days. However, it just isn’t going to move up on my list without something changing soon.

Cheer Boys went for some actual conflict this week and it didn’t really spoil the overall feel good atmosphere the show has gone for up until now. It kind of felt like the right time in the series for a serious break down in the team so as long as next week does something about it, this will be fine.

Momokuri ran into a small problem this week when I genuinely found myself criticising the animation rather than watching the show. This is not an anime built on a foundation of impressive animation and the animation didn’t get any worse. That indicates to me that I’m finally getting tired of cute couple getting awkwardly together. It’s kind of what happened with Rinne. The anime didn’t actually get worse, but I’d kind of found that my interest in it was done.

Not Dropped But Close

  • Hitorinoshita (Ep 7)
  • Taboo Tattoo (Ep 8)

Hitorinoshita managed to surprise me with a not terrible 7th episode. Does that mean the anime is going to improve as we come to the end of the season? I actually kind of hope so because there are still some fascinating ideas hidden underneath the poor characterisation and storytelling we’ve had so far. Definite improvement during episode 7.

Lastly, Taboo Tattoo manages to be definitively the worst anime I am still watching this season. I’m actually looking forward to it ending so I can review the entire series and then never think about it ever again.

Summer 2016 Week 7

Week 7 is always a bit hit and miss. Some shows go into serious filler mode while others start barreling into a climax whether they are ready for it or not. There are the rare few shows that actually manage to make a good showing though (D Gray Man Hallow is just going from strength to strength, though as it is a continuation of a long running series I guess it doesn’t count).

As always, I would love to hear your thoughts on the season below.

I Must Keep Watching

D Gray Man Hallow took my breath away and crushed my heart this week and I loved every minute of it. Seriously cannot wait for the next episode right now.

Alderamin continues to impress but a conflict set-up episode immediately following a flash back episode mean the plot is really crawling incrementally. We know what they are trying to do in this episode and it will be well worth watching but not a lot actually happens here. Good thing the characters are still shining or this may have fallen on the list.

Orange episode 7 decides to go for the frontal attack as Suwa openly joins Naho in trying to change time and save their friend. This is a solid episode and yet it still feels like it is trying to keep a lid on the emotions because I guess it doesn’t want to climax too early.

The Morose Mononokean gave us a very solid episode (that ended in a to be continued) and just seeing Abeno actually rattled made this week work for me. Hopefully they conclude this 2 parter well but only next week will tell us.

Days picked up a bit this week with some real character development and an actual sense of tension throughout the episode. It’s still a generic and sweet story about a kid wanting to play soccer but this episode was a bit more engaging than the previous one.

I had to drop Tales of Zestiria the X in ranking this week. In terms of narrative, the break in Sorey’s storyline has really killed some of the momentum (and my memory of what the story was before we jumped to Velvet). More importantly, I’m now more interested in Velvet’s story than what we’d been watching before so it feels counter productive really.

Still On My Radar

Food Wars did something amazing this week and actually drew me into a cook off that I started watching with almost zero interest. I think it was the intensity of the characters but now I’m really pumped up for the end of the Autumn Election.

91 Days got violent this week and somehow Avilio has now aided Fango into a position of power. That just strikes me as a really terrible idea.

Momokuri actually pulled out a really touching episode (in amongst the general sweetness) and it feels like our two protagonists are finally developing a little bit. Great fun to watch.

While I’m glad Cheer Boys got moving again this week, I felt like the introductions to so many new characters were rushed and while they’ve set a new goal to get to, it all just feels too much too quickly. Still a very uplifting show though.

Not Dropped But Close

Hitorinoshita has become the series I just should have read the warning label on and dropped before I got to this point. Though, Taboo Tattoo isn’t any better. These shows are definitely fighting for bottom of the barrel.
