Interviews With Monster Girls Episode 9

monster9

Review:

This story continues to have small moments that I really enjoy sandwiched inbetween random, silly, or pointless moments that do little to engage. The opening sequences with Sakae rolling around on the floor with her teddy-bear goes into the latter category being both silly and ultimately unnecessary to the story that unfolds after. Still, the interaction between Sakae and Takahashi this week was quite entertaining because it actually felt sincere.

This show is at its best when it focusses on Takahashi learning more about the demis and their lives and they begin to feel accepted and like they have a place where they can be themselves.

Then of course we go back to the three girls and things kind of become progressively more silly until the episode ends.

Interviews with Monster Girls Episode 7

Review:

There were some good moments and some information about how society is adjusting to demis in this episode. Sprinkled in amongst some incredibly lame or dull moments. Is it really necessary for Hikari to be unable to provide a simple description of a person? Is it actually necessary for Sakie to deliver this self-aware gem that just fell completely flat in the conversation given there was really no reason for it:

monster7b

Was there any reason for the younger detective at all and his wall jumping attack? These things distracted and added nothing.

Also, the ending of this episode might be seen as sweet by some but I just found it slightly gag worthy. Yes, you two smoking men can protect all the female demis with your good intentions just because you are male. No way could they possibly sort out their own issues without you. Okay, I’m projecting my own issues into my interpretation but I just found this whole scene distasteful.

That said, let’s end on a positive. I absolutely loved Sakie’s reaction when she tried to rationalise her own feelings. They kind of nailed the execution by providing an external monologue of exactly what happens in your head when you try to rationalise something as irrational as romance.

So, this episode didn’t do much to sell me on the show but it didn’t make me drop it so on we go to next week.

Interviews With Monster Girls Episode 3

monster3

Review:

This week we focus more on the succubus teacher (and despite that her name is completely forgotten after the episode). I was actually fairly drawn in to the episode during the first half while we followed her daily life because they really made the challenges she faced as a demi trying to live a normal life quite clear and you could understand some of her reactions in episode 1. The second half however where she is talking with the dullahan in the library just makes you wonder what rules there are in Japan governing student-teacher relations given the succubus doesn’t bat an eye over the girl falling for the teacher, but rather  gets jealous because she’s also kind of falling for him. And so Takahashi’s harem is more or less complete. Next week, the snow girl.

Interviews with Monster Girls Episodes 1 + 2

monster1

Overview:

Demi-humans are apparently a thing so there are vampires, snow women and whatever else running around in the world. Takahashi is a Biology teacher who wants to interview demi-humans for a paper he’s writing but hasn’t met any, until the new teacher at school and three students turn out to be demis.

Review Episode 1:

Honestly, I passed on this from the synopsis. It really just kind of seemed like a sleazy harem set-up or like a dull daily lives kind of thing with the cheap gimmick of some of the characters being monsters thrown in. And that second view is kind of accurate except that it isn’t all that dull. Okay, nothing momentous happened but the characters kind of kept things moving along and most of the interactions between them were entertaining enough. Whether or not I stay interested in this remains to be seen but for now I’m in for at least one more episode.

Review Episode 2:

This episode was a little bit more on the dull side probably because we spend a great deal of it on a date with Macchi and Takahashi (what is it with girls crushing on their teacher in anime).

monster2

Anyway, the suspected harem setting seems to be closer than I thought with Macchi already looking at teacher, Hikari a little bit jealous, and the succubus teacher starting to warm up to Takahashi because of the way he deals with the girls and their problems. This stayed fairly cute and there were one or two funny moments, mostly involving Hikari’s promise to look after Macchi’s body while she went on her date.

monster2b

But if this is going to be the ongoing tone and pace of the show I’m probably not going to make it through a full season. We’ll see what happens.
