Akashic Records of a Bastard Magical Instructor Episode 8

Review:

Well, they certainly upped the damage this week but I’m not sure what else this accomplished. Re=L has a complicated past tied up with her brother and the weird divine researchers secret cult thing that seems like one of the least secret organisations ever. The students get a lecture about revival magic which I’m guessing will become significant fairly soon.

And for some reason mid-way through the episode the show forgets it isn’t a zombie story.

It’s a messy episode that goes from dull and ordinary to hectic and doesn’t pause for breath after that point. Rumia is still the designated hostage of the episode, Re=L has become a cookie cutter character with little will power of her own swayed from one side to the other through some very basic mind manipulation, and Sistine hasn’t really been interesting in a long time so her crying and wailing this episode was more or less par for the course. That isn’t to say it wasn’t reasonably interesting to watch, but this show never really knows what tone or pace it is going for and more just pelts ideas around to see what sticks.

Akashic Records of a Bastard Magical Instructor Episode 6

Review:

So the opening of this episode was super tense for about a minute and then they pulled a stupid gag and the whole thing just kind of fell flat. Which might indicate this was a bad episode, and yet, oddly enough, they managed to pull something pretty decent from the wreckage of that first abrupt tone shift.

As an episode it works well. It answers our questions from last episode about the odd pair following Glenn around and why Celica isn’t doing anything about the situation. The class get to finish the magical tournament and we get to see this expression on the smug face of the instructor from class 1:

Don’t mistake that for me actually wanting Glenn to win. His students won; on their own merit. Really glad karma kicked Glenn at the end of the episode to be perfectly honest.

Still, what this episode excelled at was brining back details from not just the previous episode, but all the episodes. We get more of the flash back from when Rumia was kidnapped, Glenn reuses the spell he showed last episode, they also bring back his unique spell although I have to point out that surely it would have neutralised the barrier as well given how close he was standing to Rumia at the end… Anyway.

So this was pretty good fun.

Akashic Records of a Bastard Magical Instructor Episode 5

Review:

There are many characters where you meet them and as you get to know them your impression of them changes. Glenn kind of takes that to an extreme that from any sensible point of view makes no sense. His absolutely despicable nature in episode 1 is all but entirely gone with only the occasionally half-hearted efforts to convince us that he is in fact the same guy. This week’s throw back to Glenn Ep 1 happens when he neglects to mention to a student that he is currently just using an illusion to look like Rumia because he really wants to eat said student’s lunch.

With that scummy exception, Glenn plays the nice guy role for most of the episode and this actually was a surprisingly decent episode with more intrigue getting stirred up around Rumia and some actual violence unfolding. My only question is why isn’t Rumia the main character in this story given every major plot point has so far centred on her.
