The Fitting End To The Orc Lord Courtesy of The Slime

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 14 Review

The battle rages on, or more to the point Gelmud makes an appearance and berates the Orc Lord for taking too long to evolve into a demon lord. He then makes the mistake of attacking Gabiru and his comrades at which point Rimuru steps into the battle for the first time. Completely outclassed, Gelmud orders the Orc Lord to kills them with more or less predictable results when the loud yappy man tries to shout at monsters.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 14 Gelmud

A fairly amusing end to Gelmud, a character who has been much spoken of but only appeared in few scenes, and one that does in fact achieve his wish of turning the Orc Lord into a Demon Lord (also clues Rimuru in that there is someone above Gelmud so plot direction for future given).

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 14

Now I wondered during the last episode whether Rimuru would handle the final battle or let the ogres get their revenge. Turns out they went with both, only despite the ogres (kijin) being super-powered, their attacks don’t have all that much of an impact on a ridiculously overpowered Orc Disaster (who names these things). So Rimuru does have to take up the fight.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 14
Believe it or not, this doesn’t kill him.

To give credit where it is due, despite the two beings fighting being supremely overpowered, this fight didn’t devolve into bright lights smashing into each other as so many other stories might have taken it. Instead, we get a fairly entertaining battle where Rimuru lets the Great Sage take the reigns for awhile to inflict damage on the Orc Lord before it comes down to a contest of Starving vs Predator. I actually have to say I was pretty impressed with how this battle played out in the end.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as A Slime Episode 14 Rimuru

That’s really all there was to this episode as it seems to tie up the arc nicely. The Ogres decide they are sticking by Rimuru and I’m not entirely sure what the orc army are doing now that they are no longer mindlessly following the Orc Lord but maybe we’ll get some loose ends tied up in the next episode. So while this was pretty predictable and we still don’t really have any reason to be concerned about anyone in this show, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime remains relatively entertaining and managed to make the battle feel reasonable fresh.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 13 Review Review

This week Rimuru and a selection of the kijin (evolved ogres), goblins (including Gobta) and direwolves go to their meeting with the lizardmen to form their alliance and take on the orcs. Only to discover that Gabiru has indeed stuffed things up by taking action on his own. Go figure.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 13 Rimuru

Still, after some fairly unnecessary begging and pleading by the daughter of the lizard-chief Rimuru forms an alliance with the lizardmen using the daughter as a proxy representative and then proceeds to do nothing while his overpowered forces proceed to annihilate the orcs.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 13 Orc General

We already knew Rimuru was way OP but seeing the extent to which his subordinates are wiping out that army was a pretty impressive display of brazenly making an entire cast OP. It is a good thing I don’t actually care whether characters are overpowered as long as I still care about them, and the ogres have made a good case for me actually feeling happy about them getting some revenge after their village was wiped out and the rest of their clan eaten. Okay, there’s no tension in this scene at all because you don’t for a moment believe that anyone other than the orcs are at risk of dying, but it is an impressive visual spectacle and while it might seem petty watching the kijin blast and cut their way through the ogres was great fun. As was Ranga’s fairly impressive display.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 13 war

And, it is clear that Rimuru isn’t going to sit things out for good. He’s clearly been on the lookout for the orc lord and by the end of the episode he’s spotted him. I guess that means when we get the next episode we’ll have a Rimuru vs Orc Lord scenario though maybe he’ll let the ogres handle it. Who knows?

So, no real surprises this week but if you like this kind of fantasy war setting this was fun enough.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 12 Review

With the dryad making her request of Rimuru and the kijin being pretty onboard with the plan of taking out the orc lord, it seems it is fairly inevitable that we’ll get a battle between Rimuru’s group and the orc army. Still, allies are nice and while Rimuru doesn’t want to deal with the idiot Gabiru, he does send someone to talk to the chief of the Lizardmen and they hammer out an alliance of sorts. All looks to be going well in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, until Gabiru decides (or rather is very easily manipulated) into stuffing everything up.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 12 Souei

Characters like Gabiru really annoy me but at the same time they aren’t actually badly written characters. They really do reflect those people you meet in life who think they are all that and can do no wrong. Those people who charge into things believing it will work out because ‘how could it not’ but generally speaking then blame others for their failures or have a whole bag of excuses as to why something wasn’t their fault.

Just look at Gabiru’s explanation as to why he lost to Gobta.

I might have worked with a few people just like Gabiru. They are more annoying in real life.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 12 Gabiru

And while Gabiru eats a lot of screen time in the second half, this isn’t actually a problem because it is doing exactly what it needs to do. It is escalating the situation. Rimuru already had to deal with the orc army and the orc lord. He thought he had an alliance of Lizardmen waiting for his arrival, and now the lizards are under new leadership, stirring up the orc army and actually providing food for them (gross) and there’s almost no chance of them being able to join up. While I wouldn’t go so far as to call the situation tense, Slime doesn’t take itself seriously enough to actually have tension, it is certainly at least building up this threat as at least something that might vaguely threaten if not Rimuru then perhaps those that follow him.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 12 Rimuru

I am definitely enjoying Slime more at the moment than I was and unlike other shows this season that started reasonably well but have kind of gone nowhere or downhill (looking at you Index and SAO), this one seems to keep building on its world, characters and ideas and gets more interesting with time.

3 Ways Slime Is Exploring Endings and Beginnings

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode Review Title Image

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 8 Review

There’s no real surprise that an anime with reincarnation in the title is looking at the idea of endings and new beginnings. What is surprising is the way “That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime” is committed to the idea of one life coming to an end opening the path to something new. While earlier in the season I most definitely took a swing at this show for the reincarnation gimmick, and from a character point of view I stand by that because the whole past life thing is almost irrelevant to who Rimuru is becoming, from a thematic point of view Slime is actually a lot more consistent than it first appeared.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 1
Episode 1

The obvious ending and beginning is Rimuru Tempest, formally Mikami Satoru (a point they finally reminded us of in episode 8). Stabbed in episode one, Satoru awakens in a cave as a slime and begins his new life in his new form and body. While the transition is fairly seamless and ultimately didn’t feel very weighty, it does set a theme in place that we have seen this show return to again and again since the first episode.

I’d like to discuss Veldora, just because dragons are kind of cool and all, but that story doesn’t feel anywhere near finished yet and to be honest I’m not sure where it is going so I’m just going to leave that one alone and skip right on to the dwarves.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 4
Episode 4

Kaijin is fairly dissatisfied with where he is given the persecution he receives from his former subordinate. He positively jumps at the opportunity to travel with Rimuru which originally just would have been a choice for him to make. However, the sham trial and subsequent banishment more or less bring his former life to a definitive close whether he’d made the choice or not. Once again though, we see that the end of one life has opened the door to another, and in both of these cases losing something and leaving it behind isn’t seen as a tragedy when it leads to new opportunities.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 8 Rimuru and Shizu

And now we come to this current episode which is really why I was thinking about this at all. Shizu, or Shizue, has finally come to the end of her road. For ten minutes of this episode (half the run time) we hear her story and what she has done over the long life she has lived in this world. We hear her final request to Rimuru that he devour her. We see her happiness at being reunited with her mother. A lot of this glosses over the fact that she did just die and then her corpse was eaten, but that would kind of be a downer in an otherwise fairly upbeat series so the focus is entirely on the positive.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 8 Rimuru and Shizu farewell

However, what is the new beginning?

Well, we finally found an answer to something that had been bothering me from the OP, though I’m guessing fans of the source knew all along. I wondered how Rimuru would acquire a human form given we already knew he had to eat something to copy it. I couldn’t imagine Rimuru eating a human given one of his first steps was to ban his followers from attacking people. Also, despite Rimuru being a slime now, it just didn’t sit right that a former human might actually eat another (I guess they could go there, but it just doesn’t seem to fit).

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 8 Rimuru Human

So, at episode 8, Rimuru finally has a human form he can use and in the narration at the end declares that the story is about to begin. I’m not sure how many stories get away with 8 episodes before declaring they are going to start, but despite the slow start this series has had, I will admit I’m pretty interested in where they will go next. Every door that has closed so far in this series has opened up so many more wonderful possibilities and I really hope the story explores them.
