Cute High Earth Defense Club Happy Kiss Episodes 6: Rinse and Repeat

I get that magical girl anime are formulaic at times, but a parody needs to do more than replay over and over again. We get the joke already.

This episode served as further evidence that the less actual plot an episode provides, the more likely we are to get a full transformation sequence. In the villain of the week’s defence, he was pretty useless and his attacks were pretty much brushed off like water off a duck’s back. And even before transforming, the character in question was certainly one of the more pathetic we’ve seen thus far.

But rather than bemoaning the samey nature of this episode after the last couple, I kind of liked the dialogue earlier in the episode. There were some genuinely funny moments, some good timings in the responses, and an oddly passionate declaration of why purple is a pretty good colour. It adds to the overall watchability of an anime that really shouldn’t be all that entertaining as it milks a very narrow band of humour for the third season in a row.

Cute High Earth Defense Club Happy Kiss Episodes 4 + 5: Are You Happy?

We continue our plot of over-simplistic villains and solutions that make no sense as our brave (or rather reluctant) knights continue to thwart attempts at… You know, I’m not even sure that the villain in this anime has an actual plan.

Defense4a

Episode 4:

Dad obsessed with finding buried treasure drives son to ranting at people in a bath house. Then son seems fine but somehow the student council decide he is resentful and transform him into a monster. Fortunately, the heroes are also out digging for treasure because there are some embarrassing secrets hidden inside time-capsules right where the treasure dig is taking place. Without a single twist, this plot just drives along its standard path right to the end of the episode.

Episode 5:

I should never watch episodes of this anime back to back. Like ever.

I always had this theory with Sailor Moon that you could always tell if an episode was going into a serious battle because you would get a full transformation sequence for each character early in the episode. The only other time you would get full transformation sequences were on throw-away episodes where even the filler-monster-of-the-week characters couldn’t actually fill the twenty minutes run time. Why is this relevant? Because Cute High gave us full transformation sequences of the boys, I think mostly because there was no way the villain of the week was ever going to have enough substance to carry even this insubstantial episode. We definitely hit a low point with episode 5, unless you happen to like the boy’s transformations.

Cute High Earth Defense Club Happy Kiss Episode 3: Ridiculous Villains Here

I asked last week how many weeks you could run the same joke and this anime is determined to find out. Strictly formulaic in its approach, you either enjoy the conversations between the characters or there’s really nothing much else going on.

Defense3d

I think the one thing this season has over previous ones, is that stupid song that starts when they do their attack (“Are you Happy?”). It gets ridiculously stuck in my head and the sheer ludicrousness of the entire thing just kind of makes it work. That said, otherwise this season has little to distinguish it from previous iterations of Cute High Earth Defense Club Love and realistically there’s only so many transformation sequences you can watch with self-award comments about having to go through the whole sequence you can watch before you realise that there’s not a lot else going on here.

Defense3a

The mix of boys remains kind of interesting this season and their interactions in the early half of the episodes remain amusing enough. I kind of like that the older members of both teams are seemingly friends and are now happily acknowledging that they are enemies as if it is perfectly normal.

Defense3c

But the real down side of this, other then the repetition of the same basic formula over and over, is that the villains remain an extreme kind of lame. And while that is a byproduct of being a parody and many of the villains wouldn’t look too out of place in a Sailor Moon episode, it is really hard to get into any of the fight sequences because they all seem so incredibly inconsequential to the point where not even the characters themselves care. Still, I’m having enough fun with aspects of this that I’m going to keep going.

What are your thoughts?

Cute High Earth Defense Club Happy Kiss Episode 2: The Hero’s Indifference

How many weeks can an anime milk the joke of a team of heroes uninterested in the villains and the lame monsters  and have it remain amusing? Cute High Earth Defense Club Happy Kiss is definitely going to try to find out as it runs this joke ragged.

Defense2c

Maybe I’m just go to show my age, but I remember reading the Peanuts comics when I was a kid (they were old even then mind you) and reading the strips where Lucy holds the ball for Charlie Brown before pulling it away. Over and over again the punchline was always the same no matter what twists came earlier in the sequence or what reasoning she gave Charlie Brown as to why this time would be different. This episode felt a bit like that as the same joke is played again and again. The main hero, Kyotaro, is not interested in saving anyone or anything. His few moments of action are the quickest path to him getting more sleep or food. Despite the repeat of this joke, it lands most every time.

Defense2h

Part of that is the increasing frustration on behalf of the villains and part of it is the reaction of his own team-mates. Now whether this joke can continue to travel through an entire season or whether it starts showing some wear in the next few episodes will more or less determine the fate of Happy Kiss. Will it be a parody that brings ongoing chuckles throughout, or is it going to go the way of so many others with a concept that is funny for about five minutes that then dries out. I guess we’ll see, but so far this anime has definitely made me laugh.

Cute High Earth Defense Club Happy Kiss First Impressions

I enjoyed the first Cute High Earth Defense Club anime but dropped the sequel mid-way because it just felt repetitive. I wasn’t going to pick this up, but a few positive reviews encouraged me to try episode one. I ended up being pleasantly surprise. What did you think of this first episode?

Defense1a

What happens when five guys gather in a club room and then a bath house talking about nothing in particular when a strange creature appears and grants them magic powers they didn’t ask for and don’t want? Well, we’ve seen before what happens and for a season at least it was pretty entertaining so what does Happy Kiss bring to the table?

Defense1e

This time around we have an otter instead of a wombat and this otter claims to be a Prince. Judging from the preview of the next episode it looks like the politics of the aliens are actually going to come more into play this time around though we’ll wait and see. We also have five different guys but at the same time it is more of the same. While the cast are amusing enough they are all pretty much standing in for some fairly standard tropes and the dialogue, while entertaining isn’t exactly flowing naturally. Particularly with fourth wall breaking comments about the animators flubbing a scene.

Defense1c

Still, this works because it holds to the standard magical girl cliches and injects just enough humour to the situation through the absurdity of it. As a first episode it was amusing enough and small details like the tea cups early in the episode having a stripe of the colour the boys would eventually transform into were appreciated.

Defense1d

I’ll give this one a bit longer and see how it goes. And yes, I know I’m being contrary after dropping other comedy shows but for some reason I have a soft spot for this franchise.
