Being Generic Is Not A Crime;
Being Generic and Boring However…

Isekai Cheat Magician is one of those shows where there is in fact truth in the label, though that seems to be a trend in isekai stories (light novels and anime) to simply describe the basic plot and use that as your title. I mean, I always struggled coming up with titles for stories but apparently if I got back into writing I could just put that concern to the side and write a brief synopsis and there we go – insta-title.

In seriousness though, generic isekai is something I quite enjoy. There’s something quite relaxing about genre fiction that doesn’t really aspire to be anything beyond its basic label and when wordanime.blog/best-fantasy-anime/”>watching with others isekai can work as it usually brings something to the table that everyone can enjoy. While I do enjoy more thought provoking fare inbetween my binge popcorn meals, I happily return to these fairly routine anime with a regularity that kind of indicates that I’m getting something out of it.

Despite that, Isekai Cheat Magician ended up being one of those anime that started out looking like something I would truly enjoy despite its limitations, for instance Kenja no Mago, and yet ended up being one of the more forgettable viewing experiences of the year. Which is actually a pretty impressive feat given this year’s viewing also included that happily dismissed Grimms Notes.

Cheat8e

However, just in case you have never embraced watching an isekai before, let me run through the basic plot here. Mr Ordinary-Nice-Guy gets summoned by a Princess to another world where he naturally has the biggest, baddest magic power around but of course he won’t abuse his power but rather he’ll help the first people who take an interest in him because they are of course good and everybody who opposes them must be bad for reasons.

Our ‘twist’ such as it is for Isekai Cheat Magician, is that Mr Ordinary-Nice-Guy (Taichi) is with his female child-hood friend when the summoning circle appears and she, despite Nice-Guy pushing her out of the way, jumps back into the circle and gets herself summoned as well.

Isekai Cheat Magician Episode 1

It’s fine. She also has super-powers and is actually smart so could probably have been the protagonist on her own but apparently the author wasn’t sure that his nicely written, well rounded female characters could carry a show and so tied them all inexplicably to the dead-weight and personality-less actual protagonist.

Alright, he has a personality but largely it consists of being dense and being nice in equal measure before occasionally punching something.

And let’s consider that for a moment. Despite being a cheat ‘magician’, and boy do they remind us of that a lot as he calls himself one at least once every second episode, or Rin (the childhood friend does), he largely uses his power to strengthen his body and punch things. They could have called him isekai-wannabe-fighter and the story probably would have turned out much the same except for his whole connection with the spirits who actually help him use the occasional bit of magic. Instead of spells and chants and really cool combinations of ideas we get a guy who glows and punches things.

Admittedly, it worked really well for Gon (Hunter x Hunter) but then again they weren’t trying to convince us that Gon was actually a magician.

Cheat12e

Then we have Rin who actually does learn to use magic and carries a staff. At one point she uses a combination of magic spells to slow down an entire army and it is really cool to watch. She’s confident and self-assured, using her knowledge of science to combine with magical power to deliver some spells that are unknown in the world they’ve been transported to. Wow, Rin could carry this anime all on her own and join the list of female leads in isekai anime except that instead she ended up in this.

When she’s paired up with Myura, one of the inhabitants of the world who works to train them in magic, the two are really great fun to watch. Both are powerful but not unbeatable and both are observant about their surroundings.

cheat2c

Which makes these two characters getting sidelined so the chosen one can save the day in the final battle fairly unpalatable and is perhaps the worst offense of Isekai Cheat Magician (other than just being a bit dull).

Somehow all their tough and strong personality traits get evaporated and they end up more or less just waiting around while Taichi mops things up. It is most definitely a disappointing direction for their characters, though clearly it was inevitable. Even in earlier fights where Taichi was around they found reasons to almost damsel-in-distress them or they found ways to separate the group. Because, they can only be strong and self-reliant if the protagonist isn’t on the scene. That inconsistency kind of hurt.

By the time we throw in villains who by and large aren’t even cliches they are so paper-thin in terms of the writing you almost have to wonder if there’s anything left to appeal about this anime. And the truth is, there are some nice moments between Taichi and Rin and then between Rin and Myura. Rin manages to bring out the best in the cast around her and when she’s bouncing off someone the scenes come to life.

Yet, that probably isn’t enough to salvage Isekai Cheat Magician’s plot that just feels like they didn’t know what to do beyond summon two characters and throw stuff at them, and characters who don’t actually have a consistent personality but merely respond as the plot demands at the time.

Cheat10c
Umm… duh.

Isekai Cheat Magician isn’t creative enough to be called a train wreck. It just kind of is.

Isekai Cheat Magician has visuals that are adequate but certainly nothing note-worthy, music that is equally forgettable, and ultimately an unfinished story because while we have a fight in the final episodes the ‘true’ mastermind has yet to actually grace the scene, and honestly I’ll happily recommend dozens of other isekai titles before this one. That doesn’t make this one broken beyond repair and it certainly is watchable (at least if you’ve watched many other isekai stories). But there’s nothing here that makes this one something that needs to be watched and there are plenty of better anime that do more or less the same things.

A few glimmers of decent characterisation and a decent basic concept just can’t make up for the deficits of Isekai Cheat Magician. Characters introduced only to show off the power of the main character or to drag out the watch time really weigh the mid-season down, and the absence of any real threat makes it hard to buy into any of the tension. Not to mention, when they are flailing about for a real fight at the end they resort to zombies… Like really?

Cheat11e

As with many titles I’ll have to say the greatest problem with Isekai Cheat Magician is wasted potential. The generic set up and storyline is used over and over because it is functionally sound, but only if the writers do something with it. Here it never went anywhere or kept trying to go somewhere but didn’t really know how to build up either the plot or the characters over a sustained period of time. So yes, I’d have to say Isekai Cheat Magician probably isn’t worth your time.

Isekai Cheat Magician Review Episode 12

I Guess We Had To Have Seen That Coming

Cheat12b

Isekai Cheat Magician Episode 12

Well Isekai Cheat Magician is at least living up to its name and Taichi does the ultimate protagonist cheat move of suddenly getting an unlocked power mid-final battle which naturally saves the day. Where this might have some dramatic tension in other stories despite the cliche here it just feels flat and lazy because it comes on the back of a narrative that never really moved beyond being flat and lazy and they’ve given us little reason to care about Taichi at this point. Not to mention his mental struggle with taking that last step lasted all of two lines of dialogue. It wasn’t exactly compelling.

Cheat12c

Rin is also thoroughly side-lined here. She starts out by recruiting the mercenary to her side and regrouping with Taichi but then does nothing but get a hug. It makes little sense to have her run to his side for no reason. Also, Rin getting to do nothing in the final battle just makes me wonder why they bothered with her character at all. She started out fairly interesting and then was utterly underutilised at every point where it might have mattered. To the point where it might have worked just as well for Rin to not have been in the story, and given she’s been the best thing about most episodes, that’s kind of sad.

To say that this final episode is disappointing would be a lie. After 11 episodes, there was nothing else to expect from this. The battle is wrapped up, the ‘bad guys’ defeated, and the mystery lade in the shadows is still a mystery waiting to be uncovered in a sequel that I sincerely hope is not forthcoming. There are plenty of other shows that need a season two first.

A Stupid Script For Stupid Characters

Cheat11a

Isekai Cheat Magician Episodes 10 + 11

Wow, if I thought Isekai Cheat Magician had been a little on the dumb side before, episodes 10 and 11 confirmed beyond a shadow of a doubt that the characters in this story are dumb as bricks and the plot isn’t much better. Admittedly, you aren’t exactly going into a generic isekai expecting brilliance, but when a character claims that they wouldn’t lose if the other character wasn’t stronger and that is exemplary of the genius level statements characters are making across two episodes, eye-rolling becomes the norm while watching.

Cheat10c
Like, duh.

Anyway, after the attack on the city in episode 9, Taichi, Rin and others get rewarded by getting to pick a shiny new weapon from the royal collection and then we play around for a bit before the news of the real attack comes in. The King makes a speech and we plunge straight into war, getting to see the scenes from the opening of episode one again, though this time they are even less impressive than they were as an opening act.

The four main characters split up across the battlefield and take on individual opponents while the background characters kind of sway back and forth when they exist in the shot at all and then Taichi just kind of walks in to the enemy camp and lays out a possible peace agreement which is thoroughly shot down. It’s okay though, because the creepy guy who has clearly been manipulating the duke has been waiting for this moment to monologue his every thought and to summon zombies.

Cheat11e

Which is where episode 11 ends and I guess I’ll have to watch the next episode to find out how Taichi easily defeats the zombies and we return to business as usual. Meanwhile the real ‘mastermind’ behind all of this is still just watching from the shadows as all terribly written mastermind’s do.

Isekai Cheat Magician Review Episode 9

The Easy Way To Win A War

Cheat9d

Isekai Cheat Magician Episode 9

This series goes from average to less than average as they build up Rin and Taichi’s first experience with war and the conflict over killing humans, to produce a battle that barely has any interaction between the two sides and is won almost entirely by the enemy’s stupidity. Yep, this is Isekai Cheat Magician at its current state and while it might be trying to hold off for a big finish, the problem is that this conflict was almost laughably bad in its presentation.

Cheat9b

Actually laughably bad would have been better.

Our ‘villains’ are definitely the one note kind where for whatever reason they sit around planning stuff and disagree about how to do it before one of them is sent to ‘take care of things’ with an idiotic plan of action while the rest sit about and… okay, one of them sent out an utterly useless assassin so I guess he wasn’t sitting on his butt doing nothing.

Cheat9e

I still don’t buy this conflict at all given there’s been no talk of ending it any way except civil war. We don’t really know why the other group decided they had to break off other than a disagreement over foreign policy and to be honest; they aren’t impressing as a reasonable political force that has an actual chance of leading. Then we see that even within the group no one trusts anyone else and they are all out for their own gain and the entire threat dissolves into silliness.

Cheat9f

Taichi and Rin do get a few decent moments because their inner turmoil at going to war is at least genuine. If only it was given a better setting to play out on.

Isekai Cheat Magician Review Episode 8

Cheat8e

Who Summoned Taichi?

Cheat8e

Isekai Cheat Magician Episode 8

Taichi, Rin, Myura and their mentor are summoned to meet the king who entrusts them with winning a potential fight against his own brother who apparently disagrees with his political policies… The whole time this is being explained I just kept wondering why anyone in the room expected Taichi or Rin to care and yet other than one outburst the two of them are just kind of cool with the idea that they are being forced to take up arms in a war that they have no personal stake in.

Cheat8c

This happens a lot in isekai stories where for whatever reason the protagonist gets dragged into some kind of conflict. Particularly when the characters themselves want to go home and it isn’t a case of they died and reincarnated. Yet they never seem upset enough by the situation. They just kind of accept that ‘this must be the only way’ or ‘it might be easier to go along with it’ and we move on with the plot.

Cheat8d

It really kind of makes it difficult to see Taichi and Rin as anything but plot devices. Even if they do everything they are asked and the Princess does find the impossible solution to sending them back, which is a ridiculous long-shot of a promise in the first place, having been through one fight already and about to go into another war these two should be picking up at least emotional baggage and scars like crazy and yet they are just fine. And while I get the comedic tone of the story doesn’t lend itself to deep exploration about the difficulties of being involved in conflict, they could do something to lend some credibility to these two as actual characters.

Cheat8f

Affiliate Link – Art Fan Book

Anyway, our next conflict is brother vs brother fighting over something incredibly petty that really should be solved by actually talking things through but instead we’ll go to war over it. I get foreign policy is important but I don’t see how you can protect your country by having people fight each other. What is worse is it looks like the non-King brother is just being manipulated by people who are telling him he’s the only one who can protect the country. So that makes it worse than petty but outright stupid.

Cheat8b
Yeah, I’d hate to miss out on hearing some compelling character motive…

At the very least Taichi is having some doubts about fighting people and there’s a semi-decent scene toward the end where he summons and talks with Aerial as he’s worried about actually killing someone because he’s overpowered. He’s also worried about Rin as he wants her to be able to return to her normal high school life (doubtful). This is as close to a real reaction as we’re going to get here so I kind of appreciated it even if it won’t change how the characters act next week in the slightest.

Isekai Cheat Magician Review Episode 7

Cheat7e

The Power Of A Death The Audience Won’t Care About

Cheat7e

Isekai Cheat Magician Episode 7

In an anime that had been consistently better written with characters we cared more about, the events of episode 7 would have been pretty amazing to watch. Cliché to be sure, but cliché comes about because something works or appeals and is then used over and over again because it is effective. However, Isekai Cheat Magician hasn’t put in the time and effort to make this episode work the way it really should have and that’s a little disappointing because even with the lacklustre build-up to this semi-poignant moment it still kind of worked though it was more that you could see what they were aiming for and see just why it didn’t quite connect emotionally.

Cheat7b

By and large the problem here is that Ana as a character has had little or no build up. I mean, she’s been in previous episodes, but it is almost like reading a summary of a character rather than actually getting to know here. Introduced as a villain (though the blink and you’ll miss it kind) before being taken prisoner and then showing up to assist Taichi as he beat some goblins before apparently being hypnotised into walking out onto a battlefield and ending up on the wrong end of a dragon attack. For us to take this character progression seriously we really needed each of these scenes to carry a lot more weight than they did and for Ana herself to be not as forgettable as a character.

Cheat7d

I mean, we get the death of a critical character as motivator; it has been done to death. But Maes Hughes in FMA is one of the most beloved characters of all time so his death had significant weight for the audience, and his relationship with Mustang and the Elric brothers had been well established, giving his death narrative weight. That’s how you make such a sequence work and be more or less unforgettable. Here, we get the watered down version that works in theory but not emotionally.

Affiliate Link – Fashion Doll
THE PROMISED NEVERLAND PURENEEMO CHARACTER SERIES 1/6 SCALE FASHION DOLL: EMMA

While it might seem like I’m being harsh, I actually didn’t mind this episode. It isn’t as though it did a terrible job of the whole thing and Taichi even kind of moved up a notch as a character when he admitted he hadn’t been taking things seriously enough since arriving in the world. Again, the writing doesn’t really lend this scene enough weight but it is a nice scene and a good moment for his character.

Cheat7c

Still, I’m just thinking how much better this whole sequence would have worked if we’d thrown Rin into the path rather than Ana. Honestly, she only came to the world because she jumped into the summoning circle. While she’s the best character the show has on offer, her existence with the story is not entirely necessary and using her to get Taichi to focus on whatever mission he’s going to end up on would have worked far more effectively and the audience probably would have cared a great deal (or at least more) if Rin had been the one who ended up in the dirt.

Isekai Cheat Magician Review Episode 6

Monster Fighting Above and Below

Cheat6b

Isekai Cheat Magician Episode 6

This episode was kind of fun but also kind of just going through the motions. With Taichi battling goblins underground and the others taking on the army above ground there is plenty of action and explosive spells, which in a better animated anime might have been enough to elevate this to an excellent episode, but here it just remains kind of fun.

Cheat6c

The villain just kind of walking around and talking about how great it all is that everything has worked out and how impressed he is with Taichi and Rin doesn’t really lend any credibility to him or sense of menace. He’s perhaps the weakest element this week. Though the subtitles suddenly deciding the Myura is Mullen or Muller was a little bit distracting – I get that subtitles aren’t always exact but changing the name of a character from one week to the next is a little off-putting.

Cheat6d

It also didn’t help that the twin girls introduced last week on the villain’s side get one kind of taunting line before they become victims of their own monsters and are rescued by Taichi. Again, it kind of kills any sense of tension or belief that those opposing Taichi have any chance of success given they seem to dispose of so many of their pawns after so little.

Cheat6a

THE ART OF DOOM: ETERNAL (HARDCOVER)

Putting that aside, the battlefield is interesting enough. Rin trying different combinations of elements to duplicate effects she’s learned about in our world is kind of cool and overall while the monsters don’t seem all that scary it is a decent enough fight for the anime it is in.

Cheat6e

Naturally though Rin and Myura aren’t really allowed to have a moment here and Taichi is once again swooping in for a last minute rescue as Rin laments not being able to tell him that he is strong. For all that Rin gets some great character moments she also gets some pretty terrible ones and the end of this episode certainly falls into the latter category.

Isekai Cheat Magician Review Episode 5

Cheat5b

The Fun Begins To Falter

Cheat5b
Taichi wondering how many people are still watching this anime.

Isekai Cheat Magician Episode 5

Previously the generic nature of Isekai Cheat Magician hasn’t been a problem for me. The anime has been fun enough despite the predictable nature. That was until episode 5 where it suddenly felt like they really were just going through a check list of standard developments with no sense of fun or energy.

Cheat5c

I think where this episode went really wrong was in its explanation of Taichi’s sudden power-up last week. In addition to being a talking heads fest as his teacher explained what happened in the slowest possible way, just as we got to the critical reveal we cut to another set of talking heads, the villains setting up their next ambiguous but sure to be evil plot. It was such a poorly handled transition and instead of any kind of suspense just made me want to roll my eyes.

Cheat5a

A scene like that, so early in the episode, really kind of killed the mood and all the flaws of this anime then had nowhere to hide. And seriously, taking Myura hostage just one episode after Myura and Rin were nearly made hostages?

Cheat5d

Not to mention, they’ve yet to give any kind of sense to the villains. They are just over the top bad people being bad. We’ve even got a set of young twin girls for some reason, who contribute nothing to the episode but appear in it regardless for a blink and you’ll miss it pointless line of dialogue.

Cheat5e
Yeah, see these guys are evil.

There’s still hope this show will be generic but fun, however episode 5 of Isekai Cheat Magician mostly reinforced all the complaints I’ve been reading from people about this one feeling phoned in. While I have been enjoying it, there’s very little in this episode that would allow me to defend it as this was not a particularly good or entertaining performance. Which of course begs the question of how you make the set-up to a town destroying event seem dull?

Isekai Cheat Magician Review Episode 4

No Damsels In Distress Here

Cheat4d

Isekai Cheat Magician Episode 4

The resolution of the farmer’s problem seemed pretty straight forward in the end but then the suspicious guy from last week turned out actually be suspicious leading to the first decent bit of tension Isekai Cheat Magician has thrown our way since it began. Largely that is because clearly the guy is looking specifically for Taichi and Rin which kind of gives me hope that eventually we’ll find out who was summoning them and why in the first place given they clearly didn’t end up where they were supposed to.

Cheat4b

Now, Isekai Cheat Magician is not a visually impressive anime so compared to the fight sequences you might find in Demon Slayer, this one might be a bit lacking. In fact it kind of once again reminds me of Kenja no Mago from last season where they give you a sense of how cool it should look but it doesn’t really look cool.

Cheat4e

Anyway, Rin and Myura take on the cloak wearing mage from last week and it turns out she’s battle crazy. We know she is crazy because she does that incredibly cliché anime crazy person thing and after she’s wounded takes a slurp of her own blood. I’ll never understand that trope but whatever. This anime does get points for a fake out though. The guy fighting Taichi threatens to use Rin and Myura as hostages as for a moment it looks like they are going to lose their fight and end up being the damsels in distress (DID). However, then we get a shakeup in our clichés.

Affiliate Link – Nendoroid Dress Up

Taichi is the one overwhelmed in his fight while the girls pull theirs off. But, seeing Taichi about to get crushed into the ground they are forced to surrender anyway. Fortunately, they aren’t turning Taichi into the designated DID either and he does the typical shounen thing of a plot convenient power up in the middle of a battle.

Cheat4f

In their defense, it does look pretty cool.

Basically, this episode did a great job of setting up future plot developments, expanding on Taichi’s power, and it certainly kicked the action up a notch. Other than the very average visuals I have little to complain about from this week.

Not Triple Price For Fruit

cheat3b

Isekai Cheat Magician Episode 3

Two weeks as adventurers and the guild gives Rin and Taichi a mission failed twice already by D-ranks (apparently the rank above where they started). Naturally, given these two are the stars of Isekai Cheat Magician, the quest isn’t going to prove all that difficult for them, though I feel they leave a lot unresolved when the guild declares the mission over and advances them. Fortunately, it seems like they are going to look into some of the issues more now that they’ve teamed up with Myura and gone to figure out what is causing the price rise of fruit.

cheat3c
The confidence of someone who knows they are the protagonist of the story.

Given the easy going nature of this show there is absolutely zero threat or tension as the two go about the slums to the bar to look for clues initially. Even Taichi points out that he doesn’t think they’ll lose and he says it with the confidence of someone almost positive that they have isekai protagonist plot armour. While that makes it difficult to really care when they are suddenly surrounded, Isekai Cheat Magician isn’t exactly trying to be an emotional roller coaster and is more just pacing around a well worn track so it isn’t like this is a detriment to the show.

cheat3a

Rin and Taichi continue to be a decent enough duo though Rin is increasingly getting shoved to the sidelines of the story and seems to be useful only because she actually reads the information they are given and remembers it. It is a shame given she is quite powerful in her own right (not to the extent of Taichi) and it would be nice to see the two on equal footing but instead she hangs in the back while Taichi smashes things.

Affiliate Link – Game
THE NINJA SAVIORS: RETURN OF THE WARRIORS (MULTI-LANGUAGE)

Also, Taichi’s main use of his power being reinforcing his body is cool and all, but it really makes it hard to call him a magician when he essentially just punches stuff.

cheat3d

And so this latest isekai adventure remains serviceable fair, easy enough viewing, and also very easily forgotten. While I don’t think I’ll regret choosing this one for my line up this season as I’m sure to enjoy, I also won’t exactly be giving this one a glowing recommendation. It is what it is, and for those who like average isekai and are in the mood for some easy viewing, it delivers and that’s all it does.
