Demon-Lord Retry? More like Demon-Lord Builds a Spa!

Maou-Sama Retry (Demon-Lord Retry) is one of those anime that thoroughly convinces me that just because it has a slightly different take on an old idea it doesn’t necessarily make it interesting. In Retry’s case we have Kunai who was managing a game who after deciding to shut it down finds himself inside what looks suspiciously like said game (though with some differences). I wonder where we’ve seen that set up before? Where it tries to be a little different is that the protagonist actually looks older inside the game (so if not magically made a teenager again) and is also considered a ‘demon-lord’ in the world so doesn’t instantly become a hero.

Which would all be well and good if they did anything with that. However, as far as I can see, other than the holy maidens not liking him initially, his basic interactions of find girl, help her, have girl join ever growing harem of hanger-on’s as he meanders about fairly aimlessly fits more or less with a lot of lesser isekai stories (and some that actually make this formula interesting). Where this might succeed is if the humour of Demon-Lord Retry has you cackling but to be honest I think there were about three scenes where it made me crack a smile and outside of that I was just a little bit bored.

Retry5c

Initially, despite the first episode not being particularly thrilling, I thought that this one would pick up a bit once it found its feet. Kunai seemed fairly focused on finding a way to get home and so with the first girl he rescued (Aku) in tow he sets off. And somehow over the series that plot thread becomes lost in a tangle of shopping, gaining power, increasing the number of rescued girls hanging around to the point where Aku all but disappears from the show, and then building a spa resort in a village inhabited by bunny people.

I am going to take a swipe at the art and animation in this one. While Kenja no Mago which I enjoyed earlier this year also had pretty lacklustre art and visuals that seemed pretty cheap, particularly for background characters, Demon-Lord Retry looks very lazy a lot of the time. While sometimes it seems used for humorous effect, by and large it just isn’t that nice to look at or interesting and fights are a fairly bland affair when they actually occur (they are pretty few and far between).

retry2d

While the visuals won’t make or break your enjoyment of this anime, they certainly don’t add anything appealing for those on the fence about the whole thing. Nor do the voice actors bring much to the table with each character seemingly only having one tone (a second one if they are really lucky) and then they deliver every single line in that tone.

Retry9e

However, because the story is going practically nowhere, the characters don’t have all that much to say. While we learn a few facts about the characters from their exchanges it never feels like we get to the heart of who they really are and honestly it feels a little empty.

I guess the comedy is supposed to compensate, however unless you find a holy maiden getting her butt spanked hilarious or the cross-dressing adventurer’s overt attempts to seduce Kunai chuckle worthy you’re probably not going to find the space being filled. When its not trying to gain laughs through the above there’s a kind of self-aware smugness to the series that makes it all seem more tired than funny. Certainly there are many anime that have pulled off self-aware comedy and actually been pretty amusing, but this one is not going to join their ranks (at least for me).

Retry10c

By the time this series came to a close I was well and truly ready to say goodbye to it from my watch list. At no point is it unwatchably bad, and again, those who appreciate the form of comedy in this will definitely get more from it, but it also didn’t bring anything to the table that seemed worth sitting through twenty minutes each week. The characters were flat and uninteresting, the comedy for me missed the mark by a mile, the story is all but non-existent and without interesting characters watching their town building efforts is pretty dull, and visually it just wasn’t interesting to look at.

While there’s certainly worse anime out there than Maou-Sama Retry I’m just not sure this one is worth the time.

Demon-Lord, Retry Episodes 11 + 12

Much as the rest of the season has gone, Maou-Sama Retry limps to the finish line with more fairly dull proceedings as the titular demon lord asks questions of the two adventurers about weapons and dungeons and then the sacred maiden visits the baths and interrogates his intentions. I guess for a story with so little in the way of a forward moving plot, expecting an ending was probably a little too much to ask, but this really feels like it is stopping literally mid-sentence and even if there were to be another season I would not be watching it.

Retry11c

One thing that continues to surprise me is that they still insist on floating the names of characters we’ve seen multiple times next to them when they appear in the episode. And not just the first time as Luna had hers show up early in one episode and then when she appeared later in the episode. It seems weird. Almost like they know the audience is likely to have been dulled into a sense of atrophy and might need a reminder of who someone is because they just spaced out during the episode.

Anyway, if the ongoing joke of the adventurer who looks like a girl but is a guy and for whatever reason wants to flirt with the demon lord works for you, episode 11 will work. Otherwise, there’s nothing going on. Episode 12 is essentially an extended bath scene with the holy maiden and again if that works for you, yay, but otherwise there’s just no point at all.

Retry12a

I guess this story works for some viewers but to be honest I’ve been bored while watching and episodes 11 and 12 have done nothing to change that point of view. I’ll get to a full series review at some point however the term ‘dull’ will probably feature quite heavily.

Demon-Lord, Retry Episode 10

I’m not going to waste a lot of time on this. The episode happened and Shimpfy visited the baths, characters talked a lot, and nothing really happened. It wasn’t great viewing.

Retry10c

The beginning of the episode of Maou-Sama Retry gave us a small bit of back-story on Luna but didn’t make it feel like this was actually significant, and given how she was managing her territory, or not managing it, clearly it didn’t have all that much impact on her.

Everything else really was either playing in the baths or conversations between Holy Maidens and Aides that may or may not actually become significant later. It is really hard to tell and to be honest even my idle curiosity for this show is more or less dried up at this point.

Retry10f

Not sure how many episodes this one has left but I know I don’t have many left in me. I’m pretty much over this lacklustre demon lord and his adventures of making soap and money.

Maou-Sama, Retry! Review Episode 9

Taking Care of Business

Retry9e

Demon-Lord, Retry Episode 9

If I was worried my last episode review of Maou-Sama Retry was going to start sounding like a grocery list, this week I’ve pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I have very little I genuinely want to say about the episode. On that note though, at no point in this episode did it do anything that made me annoyed or angry or that I felt was over the top. This series has delivered moments that have done all of those things, but not this episode. Of course, it also didn’t deliver much in the way of moments all that praise worthy either. It just kind of exists.

Retry9a

Another two new characters are introduced and part of me wonders if they just bring in new characters so they don’t have to repeat the eye-catches in more than one episode. One of the characters is the newly summoned aide and other than he has a sister complex to the point where he visualises her in one of the bunny suits the employees have been forced into (because, you know they are rabbit people so clearly they need to wear bunny costumes), we learn little about him. Oh, he’s also afraid of the other aide.

Retry9d

Our resident demon lord then goes for another round of extortion… I mean shopping and secures finances and the things he needs to get his new resort town up to speed and then we’re back to greet the guests. The madam from a few episodes back comes for a visit with an old, blind man and we immediately heal him earning yet more money.

Retry9f

I’m kind of struggling for an overall point to the story or any underlying hook or reason. It mostly seems like we’re going about the daily life of an empire building game and while we get the occasional silly moment, or a scene of bunny girls bathing, there’s little to interrupt the overall plodding feeling that we’re getting nowhere fast. Be that as it may, great characters would still make it an enjoyable viewing experience but these characters are barely more than dot point descriptions on a page.

Maou-Sama, Retry! Review Episode 8

Expanding Power

Retry8c

Demon-Lord, Retry Episode 8

I fear this review is going to end up more of a summary and sound a bit like a grocery list given I really just felt so indifferent to what I was seeing in Maou-Sama Retry this time around. The story picks up immediately from where we were with Zero having beaten the devil prince thing and the devilkin girl now has a serious crush on Zero much like the older maiden does.

Retry8a

Then we go through a sequence of the demon lord negotiating with the oldest holy maiden, gaining access to the library, zapping the whole expanding harem back to the bunny village and promptly creating a hospital and hot springs from nothing before he summons what sounds like another totally OP aide. It is all just kind of stuff happening with no real reason to be concerned or to care for any of the characters and no real thought that anything happening really should have all that much weight.

Retry8e

I don’t really know why they felt the need to add the devilkin girl to the party given she’s done more or less nothing so far. I’m not really sure why the demon lord feels the need to stop periodically and laugh manically. I know he’s taking on the role of the demon lord but he isn’t actually a b-grade-villain and I’m just not sure why he’d do that. As for building a hot springs I’ve more or less just accepted that anime will take any excuse to throw a hot spring into the story.

It is probably a good thing that we are at the tail end of the season because honestly I’m just not feeling this anime or anyone in it. At the moment I’m more watching it in order to complete it than because I have any expectation of it getting better.

Maou-Sama, Retry! Review Episode 7

Retry7b

Armless Clowns And Vampire Demon Prince Things

Retry7b
This is neither a clown or a vampire demon prince. This is just a very strange person.

Demon-Lord, Retry Episode 7

And why not just throw more Satanists at the story and have everyone run around fighting for an episode? Sure we don’t get anything resembling forward progress and the fighting animation is lack-lustre at best, but surely audiences will be amused if we just take the standard tropes and do them poorly?

Retry7d
Big shiny balls of light. Must be a shounen fight scene.

In fairness, this episode wasn’t actually terrible or even actually bad. It just didn’t do much of anything. Unless of course you really like it when the demon lord turns into the shirtless dragon guy in which case you’ll probably be thrilled. Or maybe vampiric demons who turn into big dog like creatures and get beaten in one blow work for you? Useless holy maidens?

Retry7e

Perhaps the best moments of the episode came early on when we saw a clown targeting Luna. He clearly bit off more than he could chew when the demon lord’s summoned assistant removed and reattached both his arms (more than once and not always the right way). It was both amusing and incredibly good at showing off just how powerful that character is and was a decent introduction into an episode that just didn’t manage to reach that level of entertaining again.

Retry7a
It may have been played for laughs, but it was a pretty good opening act.

However, I do have to tip my hat to the image of the Satanists giving their blood to summon the vampire/demon/prince guy because that was actually fairly well done and reasonably disturbing visually. After that though it is all balls of energy and light shows in a fight sequence that has no real weight behind it and even characters getting kicked off screen gives it little energy.

Retry7c

Much like the series as a whole, this episode is a mixed bag of not-great and fairly ordinary with one or two sparks that might have been quite good if handled differently. Overall though, this one just isn’t getting all that much better and remains a fairly skippable affair.

Maou-Sama, Retry! Review Episode 6

Nothing Like Strawberry Tart and Demon Fireworks To Improve Things

Retry6f

Demon-Lord, Retry Episode 6

Well we jumped from what was probably the slowest and least interesting episode of Maou-Sama Retry to one that was probably the best we’ve yet to see. While the early stage of the episode is fairly inane, about a third of the way through they start moving things along and from there until the end of the episode it just keeps going letting it end on a high note for once.

Retry6b
Nothing like a strawberry tart to solve all your problems.

They’ve apparently finally made it to the capital and they are eating at a restaurant Luna likes to celebrate Aku’s leg being healed (which happened back in episode 4). It all feels pretty drivel like until a woman with one of the stupidest names ever turns up. Then again, it is okay, Demon Lord Retry is self-aware and Kunai comments himself on how stupid the name is. I’m sure that’s supposed to somehow make this more amusing as the show gives us a lurching nod and a wink but to be honest I was almost ready to scrub my hands of the anime at this point.

Retry6c

Then things kind of took a turn as our resident demon lord seeks to earn favour with the woman as she’s apparently someone in a position of importance in the capital. After buttering her up and talking himself up a good game he gives her the gift of soap which she’s pretty underwhelmed by at first. We then launch into a soap and hot-springs spiel that any advertiser would be pleased to hear.

TAKASHI MURAKAMI: PRINTS

Retry6d

Fortunately, before this bit gets old, the city is attacked and the demon lord is off to show off for the people. We run, yet again, into the two adventurers who at first are doing okay in the fight but are nearly overrun when Maou-Sama shows up to save the day. A little demon-summoning and an explosion later and we hit the end of the episode.

Retry6g

Anyway, while not an amazing episode, this is probably the most interesting I’ve found the anime yet and I am starting to get curious about some of the demon lord’s plans and where he plans to go. I don’t think the humour in this show and I are ever going to see eye-to-eye but it doesn’t feel as intrusive when things are going on around it.

Maou-Sama, Retry! Review Episode 5

Retry5c

The Water Wheel And Bunny Hop

Retry5c

Demon-Lord, Retry Episode 5

Boy did the absence of a driving plot really hurt this week’s episode. In the absence of what little passes for humour in this series, zero character development and generally nothing interesting to note, watching this episode just felt empty.

Retry5b

The Demon Lord and others arrive in the village Luna is technically responsible for but learn that a representative from the church handles things. Of course, by handles things it mostly looks like lets them fall apart while the bunny people who seem to primarily live there, possibly because they’ve been isolated there, despair over the lack of water and worsening condition of the soil. All of this could be quite compelling to deal with and explore however once again our demon lord jumps straight past the discovering phase and into solving the problem.

And presto here’s a water wheel that somehow brings water up from a dry well and have a bag of fertiliser. I’ll build a hospital and a hot springs and everyone will be happy. The end.

Retry5a

Admittedly, we do jump from  the adventurer’s they met in the desert last week who are now just drinking in a bar and we also jump to the holy maidens where we learn that one of them is all hung up on Zero. There’s also a brief scene with the cultists who caused the issue that brought out Zero in the first place.

Retry5d

But none of these scenes are actually interesting in what they present. Sure, they remind us characters exist and in two out of three cases potentially set up future dealings, but they don’t do it in a way that makes you want to pay attention and most of these characters are so one note they are starting to make the rest of the students in the Arifureta anime seem like well rounded characters.

With the sheer number of isekai titles this season, it is definitely looking like Maou-Sama Retry is one that actually doesn’t need to be tried if you haven’t already started watching.

Maou-Sama, Retry! Review Episode 4

retry4c

Gotta Catch ‘Em All

retry4c

Demon-Lord, Retry Episode 4

There are so many moments in episode 4 of Demon-Lord Retry that could be worse. The seemingly self-titled girly-boy’s comments if pushed just a little further would go from slightly unnerving but still kind of amusing into hell-no territory and yet they managed to not take that final leap (or at least for me).

retry4d

Outside of that though, Maou-Sama Retry loads up on the standard trope characters and seems to be actively trying to collect a whole set of harem members by season’s end. Outside of the two adventurers we ran into at the start of the episode who are both dressed in a totally appropriate manner for fighting in a desert, of course, we also summon an aide who happens to be a strict older woman who apparently is also a mad-scientist. Let’s hit all the buttons in one episode.

retry4e

Honestly though, there isn’t that much to talk about because if you hadn’t dropped the episode at the butt spanking two episodes ago, nothing here is going to make or break the anime. And also, very little happens other than Maou fighting off some desert wolves and then setting up house while he summons the aide.

Affiliate Link – Figure
DC COMICS BISHOUJO DC UNIVERSE SHAZAM! 1/7 SCALE PRE-PAINTED FIGURE: MARY (SHAZAM! FAMILY)

She then heals Aku’s leg and takes away which leads on to a wonderful conversation about how she’s now ‘normal’ and I just have to wonder what anyone who is unable to walk will make of that sequence. Honestly, it is lovely that a little girl is healed but I’m sure that some tact would have gone a long way in that conversation.

retry4b

Anyway, that’s it for the episode. We started in the carriage crossing the desert and we’re still pretty much in the desert at the end. They’ve had a new member join their little party and I’m sure the two adventurers will show up again, but realistically we aren’t getting anywhere fast. What that means is this anime seems to be relying on its humour and characters to carry the anime and Demon-Lord Retry just isn’t funny enough and the characters aren’t really compelling enough to make this anything more than passable without any real driving plot.

Maou-Sama, Retry! Review Episode 3

retry3e

Did Anyone Else Think of Shugo Chara When Maou-Sama Did A Character Change?

retry3e

Demon-Lord, Retry Episode 3

Episode 3 of Demon Lord Retry gives us the most interesting development yet. While the episode execution is still undeniably poor and so many of the jokes fall flat, for instance the older holy maiden sister talking trash and swearing continuously before falling head-over-heels in love with the demon lord’s alter-ego, there’s an element of fun in the second part of this episode that has been sorely lacking up until this point.

retry3c

The main problem with this story so far is the tone. It seems to be trying to be a comedy, but it is too cool to actually try to be funny and has this jaded and weary tone that centres around the protagonist and kind of flattens every scene we’re in. Therefore when a scene genuinely tries to go for broke with humour the end result is pretty jarring in contrast with the rest of the episode. It doesn’t fit and it doesn’t sit particularly well.

retry3b

The main character also remains a morally ambivalent character. On the one hand he has clear lines he won’t cross but on the other he certainly isn’t against using others and scheming to get his way. His ‘negotiation’ with the shop owner left me wondering what his game really was and whether he was indifferent because he believes he’s dealing with NPC’s.

Affiliate Link – Nintendo Switch Game
PSYVARIAR DELTA

However, the second half of the episode where the holy maidens are attacked by the Satanists is where the episode takes a shift into something that is a lot more fun. The Demon Lord finds himself being overwhelmed by the evil ring on his finger and in order to get out of doing something that will probably kill a lot of people, he opts for a character change option that appears on his menu. The end result is actually alright and one of the more entertaining sequences we’ve had in the first three episodes of Maou-Sama Retry.

retry3d

I’m not actually fully on board with this one yet but episode three has me slightly more optimistic about this one than I was. There’s room for improvement to be sure but hopefully it starts finding its feet, figures out its tone, and delivers something reasonable.
