The Princess Goddess summoned a hero
only she got an animal-loving
wrestler cautious introvert instead.

Here is our second isekai episode of the Autumn (Fall) anime season and realistically I feel like I could copy and paste a lot of what I wrote in several other isekai premiere episodes here and nobody would ever know the difference. Here we have a young goddess assigned to save a world from an ‘S Class danger’ and so she summons a human from Japan to be the hero. In case you are wondering why Japan, apparently reading isekai stories makes you more accepting of being a hero… Um, they are aware that most of us self-proclaimed geeks and nerds aren’t exactly up to holding a sword on a battlefield right?

And so the gimmick this time around is that our summoned hero is incredibly cautious despite his reasonably high starting stats. This is amusing momentarily as at least unlike a lot of other summoned heroes he doesn’t just sigh and say ‘it can’t be helped’ before he gets on with heroic deeds. Instead he questions the rules, asks if he gets a vote or the power of veto and then outright refused to head off to the world he is meant to save until he’s done some training. For almost a moment I kind of liked him as a protagonist because he was just a little bit refreshing.

However, as with any gimmick, the writers here decide that it needs to be shoved in at every single moment and carried to its extreme or the audience might miss it. From questioning whether the food he’s been given is poisonous to wanting to lug around three suits or armour it is all just too much. The goddess’ over-the-top reactions aren’t helping the situation either.

Fortunately, this episode moves things right along and we’ve already got our hero through 15 levels through sheer training efforts, arrived in the ‘starter town’ and bought armour and equipment before heading out to kill a slime and been confronted by one of the demon lords lackeys by the end of the episode. Also, turns out the demon lord isn’t that dumb given he knew a hero was going to be sent and already marshalled his minions to take action. So there’s certainly some potential for the story to be a little bit interesting if the villains continue to actually behave rationally and put logical obstructions in the hero’s path.

By and large though, this is standard isekai fare and the only significant point is the protagonist’s attitude. Also, points for the voice actor here for managing to sound flat and disdainful without being monotone and dull. Though looking it up, he also voiced Gorou in Darling in the Franxx and that character was also well voiced and one the only positives I took out of that series. This one will also get a second episode viewing but I’m pretty sure this one isn’t offering a lot new. I’d love to be proven wrong.
