Best Anime Couples in 2021

best anime couples in 2021

As 2021 came to a close I realised that while I’d watched more than a handful of romances I was a bit stuck as to who I thought the best anime couples for the year were. Largely because while some stories ended up not being so bad there were plenty of couples that didn’t really click for me.

Still, here are my five favourite anime couples from 2021 and as always I’d love it if my readers would throw their choices in the comments as that will help others find some cute anime couples to watch. That said, there will be some spoilers below for those who have not finished the anime.

Number 5: Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Rudy and Eris)

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation

Are they the cutest anime couple of 2021?

I’ll be the first to admit technically these two aren’t an official couple even at the end of part two despite getting physically more intimate than many anime characters get ever in an anime. However, Eris and Rudy have been together for a long time and endured a lot, particularly after the two found themselves flung to a totally different continent.

What I like about the two in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is that they are just two kids growing up and they make mistakes and they don’t know how to comfort the other even when they want to. I loved the scene after Rudy had met with his father and Eris wanted to help him but was completely flustered as to how. I also enjoyed seeing Rudeus’ reaction after he used his demon eye to finally beat Eris in a match and then how guilty he felt for feeling proud.

As much as there are some elements of Jobless Reincarnation that continue to put me a little bit off-side, the relationship that has grown between these two isn’t one of them because it really feels like a relationship that would have grown from the situation they’ve been through.

Number 4: Horimiya (Hori and Miyamura)

Horimiya episode 5
Cute anime couple

Initially I loved the meeting between Hori and Miyamura and the way the two felt very comfortable being themselves around each other. They were on the fast track to being one of my favourite anime couples of all time. And all things considered, they are still pretty adorable together however Miyamura loses so much of what seemed to define him early in the series and Hori, for some reason, occasionally asks him to verbally abuse her and it is clear he isn’t very comfortable with it.

If that situation had been handled with a bit more sophistication than perhaps these two would be higher on my list of anime couples from 2021 but as it stands Horimiya ended up being close but not exactly what I was looking for in a romance. As it stands though, it is an anime romance that is worth watching as despite its short comings there’s some genuinely good moments and you can see that while some of the ideas don’t get fleshed out in the anime that they have great potential.

Number 3: Taishou Otome Fairytale (Tamahiko and Yuzuki)

Taishou Otome Fairytale Episode 3
Best anime couple 2021?

How does love start anyway? In Taishou Otome Fairytale it starts with a boy being crippled and sent away from his family and a girl being bought from her poor family and sent to marry him. That could have been the start of a pretty stagnant relationship of carer and patient but instead it was the start of a truly adorable anime couple.

Tamahiko and Yuzuki really are perfect for one another. Her positive and optimistic attitude brings him out of his depression and awakens the caring side in him that tries to stop her from overworking herself and reaches out to her when she’s in trouble. This anime has so many cavity inducing moments it would be hard to list them all but pretty much any moment where the two get to be together and have a moment to be honest with one another is enough to make your heart beat jump a little.

If being cute was enough to sell a story that Taishou Otome Fairytale would definitely have won in 2021 but as it stands these two are only number 3 on the list for cute anime couples.

Number 2: Banished From The Hero’s Party (Red and Rit)

Banished From The Hero's Party Episode 8

2021 must be the year for anime couples that do more than just hold hands and blush at one another. Banished From The Hero’s Party gives us Red and Rit and while the anime itself was kind of meh the relationship between these two characters was anything but.

Rit encounters Red after he has set up his apothecary shop and decides to move in with him (to help of course) because she was already in love with him from when the hero’s party had helped her to save her kingdom. The two progress from living under the same roof to sleeping in the same bed, sharing a bath together and are generally far more physical than we normally get in these generic fantasy stories. Though that alone wouldn’t be enough to secure them the number 2 spot.

Where these two really do shine as an adorable anime couple is in their mutual trust and respect for the other and their skills. Red used to travel with the hero’s party and has a vast array of skills and knowledge even if he wasn’t the strongest warrior. Rit on the other hand is a powerful adventurer in her own right. Both of these characters understand the others strengths and weaknesses and they come through for each other when it is needed. Now that is a cute anime couple.

Number 1: Fruits Basket the Final Season (Tohru and Kyo)

Fruits Basket Final Season

After three seasons Tohru and Kyo finally ended up together in Fruits Basket. Not that it was too much of a surprise given Tohru’s declaration of being a cat fan way back in episode 1, but still with her timid nature and Kyo’s general lack of social skills it is still kind of a small miracle that these two ever progressed.

And it was so worth the wait. It was one of those moments where you weren’t sure whether you should be smiling, cheering or crying as these two adorable characters finally overcame so much emotional baggage to just let themselves be happy and with the person who makes them happy. What makes these two the best anime couple is that they are just such deserving people and they also have had the benefit of two previous seasons to do a lot of the groundwork for their relationship. 11 or 12 episodes doesn’t seem to be quite long enough to really delve into a deep romance.

Anyway, Tohru and Kyo are definitely my choice for best anime couple in 2021 and are pretty high on my list for best couple ever. But I’ll turn it over to the readers now.

Who are you favourite anime couples from 2021?

Top 5 Moments From Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song

Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song - Best Moments

From the first episode, Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song grabbed my attention and as we past the mid-season and into the home-stretch for the anime I more or less declared that this one could be my pick of the season if not the year (at least for sci-fi anime).

Those of you who read my review of this time-travelling, AI filled anime will know that it really did stick the landing and was definitely a series I was glad to have picked up and watched weekly.

But as the season ends I find myself looking back and wanting to pick out those moments that really went above and beyond. So here are my favourite five moments from Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song and oddly it isn’t the spectacle that stuck but the moments where Vivy was really quite human.. As always, I’d love to know which moments stuck with you so if you watched the series be sure to leave a comment.

Moment No.5 From Vivy: Her Interactions With Matsumoto

Matsumoto explains his anguish of his humour not being appreciated to a non-responsive Vivy.
Image from Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song.

We all know how hard it is to tell a joke and hear nothing in response. Worse to receive a dead-pan blank stare. The anime capitalised on this awkwardness early in building the relationship between the very robotic Diva and Matsumoto, the far more savvy computer program from the future. Episode 2 particularly highlighted this and delivered some great moments as a result.

By the midway point, Matsumoto frequently found the shoe on the other foot and during Diva’s reign before Vivy re-awoke, the dynamic was entirely reversed with Diva being the casual and mischievous voice to Matsumoto’s more serious tone.

Basically, watching the evolving relationship between the two characters, whether it was Diva and the teddy-bear form, or Vivy and the cube, or any combination of these characters, they brought an interesting chemistry to the show and their relationship was a strong pillar around which the series was built.

Moment No. 4 from Vivy: Kakitani Talks To The AI

Vivy saves Kakitani from drowning.
Image from Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song.

Kakitani appears in the very first arc of Vivy as a young and impressionable terrorist who is rescued from death by Vivy. Apparently that isn’t enough to convince him to change his view on AI because he appears across multiple narrative arcs, aging each time and always as part of TOAK and pretty much always saved by our protagonist.

Episode 5 is particularly note-worthy though because after Vivy rescues him from drowning they have probably the first real conversation in their decades spanning relationship.

As much as I wasn’t keen on how the series brought their relationship to an end and the final outcome for Kakitani ultimately this was another relationship that was interesting to see develop over the course of the series and one that really shaped who Vivy was as a character.

Moment No. 3 From Vivy: Elizabeth Rips Off His Arm

Elizabeth takes the gun, and the arm.
Image from Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song

This was a moment that I actually missed my first time through the penultimate episode as it happened in an instant. By chance I’d captured the still and when I rewatched the fight sequence I couldn’t help but note how cool it was.

Also, this is the one moment that made my top 5 from the series that isn’t a direct Vivy moment.

Instead, the focus is Elizabeth. As Elizabeth helps Vivy and the team break into the tower for the final show down she gets some very cool moments but none are better than when she takes another robot’s gun, arm and all, and then blows him away with it.

Okay, in the grand scheme of things it is a small point and yet it is the small things that sometimes make all the difference and this was a nice little insertion into what is otherwise a pretty standard infiltration mission that goes horribly wrong.

Moment No. 2 From Vivy: Vivy Accepts Her New Mission

Vivy accepts the singularity project.
Image from Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song.

There’s a moment in every hero’s journey where the hero finally just accepts that they are doing this. Sure they’d already answered the call to action but part of them was hoping someone would help them or somehow things would change and they wouldn’t need to walk that path. And then they realise this is it.

For Vivy, that moment came at the end of the third narrative arc (episode 6) where she 100% committed to the mission Matsumoto had given her. No longer existing only to sing and make people happy, she also had to carry out the singularity project, and she made this choice knowing that it was the only way she could achieve her first goal because the end of the world kind of kills your audience.

However, it was also when Diva and Vivy really became two distinct personalities, a character point that is beautifully built on later in the series.

Anyway, her declaration in this episode marked a real turning point for her character and was just very nicely handled.

Moment No. 1 From Vivy: The Dramatic End To Their First Mission

Vivy takes a leap of faith.
Image from Vivy Fluorite Eye's Song.

And at last we have my favourite moment. It might seem odd that it comes from so early in the series but really it was probably this dramatic conclusion to the first narrative arc that really hooked me into Vivy and set me up for the season of enjoyable viewing that followed.

Basically at the end of the mission, she’s is in a tower that is collapsing and she has to make a dramatic leap into another building.

Cue some solid music accompaniment and a gorgeous animation of her flying past the moon with the glass sparkling around her.

Vivy is wounded and well out of her comfort zone in this mission and this moment felt truly rewarding. Totally impractical and anyone who wants to look at the physics of her jump is going to draw the conclusion that she well and truly didn’t make it, but it was very cool nonetheless and one of those moments that just made me smile.

And isn’t that why we watch any anime?

Have Your Say on the Best and Worst Anime of Autumn 2017 – Be Sure To Cast Your Vote

black7e

The Autumn 2017 anime season is nearly at its end and the poll will close at the end of December so be sure to vote if you haven’t and please share the post. The more votes, the more reliable the poll will be.

The top three anime for best haven’t changed since the beginning of this poll, however the order changes almost daily with only 1 or 2 votes splitting them and some days the three being in deadlock. Every vote will matter as we close in on the end of December for best anime. I wish I could say worst anime was close, but there’s a pretty clear ‘winner’ at this point.

Reminder that once this poll closes, I will be running the best of the year poll with the top 3 choices from each season up for voting on. So start thinking about what your anime of the year was.

By ‘best’ anime, a reminder this is not about technical proficiency but merely the anime you found the most entertaining this season for whatever reason. Which anime do you like the most?

For ‘worst’ anime of the season I ask that you only vote for an anime you are actually watching through. So while this is the anime you like the least, you didn’t drop it.

Thanks for reading.

Final Vote Reminder for Best and Worst Anime of Spring 2017

spring 2017

The Poll is closing this Sunday so this is your last chance to vote. Shows have either finished or moved into the new season and people have had some time to finish up what they are going to watch. I will point out that the Worst anime of the season has more or less been decided as it seems people agreed on that. Best anime however has been interesting. At first there was a clear winner and then not one, but two other titles caught up. Last I checked, there were only a few votes in it so now is the time to have your say.

Poll Information (for those who missed it): This is the reader’s poll and the winning anime will be announced late in July (poll closes July 9 to give the last few shows that are ending a chance to wrap up). Yes this poll includes shows that are continuing onto the next season and sequels and pretty much everything else. For the first time I’ve also allowed you multiple choices and a write your own title because I can’t remember every show that came out nor do I really want to write all those options into the poll.

For best of Spring 2017, please vote on the show you found the most entertaining to watch or had the most fun with this season. If you want to share your reasons, please comment below.

For worst of Spring 2017, please vote for a show you watched (or watched at least half of) that you found tiresome, painful or boring to watch.

Thanks for your votes and please remember to share this post.

Spring 2017 – Best and Worst Vote Reminder

spring 2017

Last week I asked what you thought the best and worst of the spring season was. If you haven’t cast your vote yet, or if you are still waiting on shows to finish, here’s the poll again. Please share it as the more votes the better for knowing what the readers are really thinking.

Let the Voting Begin for Spring 2017

spring 2017

It’s been a season of sequels and some surprisingly pleasant anime that seemed to come out of nowhere as well as some incredibly generic fantasy but as we close in on the end of the season it is time to decide which anime have been the best and the worst of the season.

This is the reader’s poll and the winning anime will be announced late in July (poll closes July 9 to give the last few shows that are ending a chance to wrap up). Yes this poll includes shows that are continuing onto the next season and sequels and pretty much everything else. For the first time I’ve also allowed you multiple choices and a write your own title because I can’t remember every show that came out nor do I really want to write all those options into the poll.

First up, the best of spring 2017. Now this is not about technical best of anything like that. This vote is based on pure entertainment and enjoyment. So you, as the viewer, decide which anime you had the most fun watching this season and vote for them. If you’d like to explain your choice, please share in the comments.

And now, the worst of spring 2017. Once again, this isn’t about the technical proficiency of the animation or anything like that. Just which anime did you actually watch that you really wish you hadn’t. Please do not just vote for a title that has been given a lot of grief. You need to have watched the anime to know how bad it is and how painful it is to watch in order to vote for it here (though if you got half-way and gave up that’s a reasonable effort).

Thanks for your votes and please remember to share this post.

The Best of Winter 2017

acca6d

Earlier today, I shared the Worst of Winter 2017 (both my opinion and the view of the readers). If you didn’t check it out, make sure you have a look later and let me know your view. Meanwhile, this post is celebrating all the good things that happened during the 2017 Winter season.

My Favourite Show

Pretty straight forward category. I had to have watched the show all the way through and I had to have loved watching it. There are only 2 shows this season that I nominated as being a must watch in my weekly overviews and choosing between them is really hard at the moment and I reserve the right to change my mind later in the year after I rewatch both as to which is actually my favourite. But for now I’m giving the award to…

ACCA.

ACCA11b

I really had a lot of fun with this show, though there is definitely a fear that it won’t hold up under a rewatch because a lot of the fun came from never knowing quite where it was going next.

My Favourite Character

This was a really hard choice because there were quite a few characters that I really loved spending time with this season, even if the show they were in wasn’t doing much for me. I did notice going through my notes from all the shows I watched this season that there are very few female characters of note from the season. Possibly that’s because of the shows I ended up following but even those that had female characters didn’t really seem to do much with them.

Anyway, not the point. My favourite character from Winter 2017 was…

Rei Kiriyama from March Comes in Like a Lion.

march14e

I loved Rei and found him almost instantly relatable and I really loved watching him struggle and slowly grow but remain true to who he was (again, I had a hard time deciding between Rei and Jean from ACCA but Rei had quite a bit more development and twice as many episodes to win me over).

My Favourite Story

Obviously ACCA but given I gave that best anime I’m going to look at my next favourite story from the season. And I know this one is going to make some people raise an eyebrow but my next favourite story from the season came from…

Chain Chronicle.

chain5b

Possibly this is a sad criticism on the quality of the narratives this season (or my taste in stories depending on how you view it) but Chain Chronicle managed to build from a pretty good opening, through some basic world building, a couple of obvious twists, to a final conflict without tripping itself up, losing momentum, or doing anything that might make you question the story (though plenty of questions about the originality and execution at times). The other show I considered here was Spiritpact but the beginning of that story was far too rocky for it to be seriously nominated even if the end of the show was pretty magnificent.

My Favourite Opening Theme

Boy I’m glad I didn’t exclude it because it was my choice for best show…

Definitely ACCA.

ACCA11d

This opening theme is a fantastic fit for the show and just fun to listen to, accompanied by highly relevant and interesting visuals. Not once did I skip the opening and I certainly went back and watched it a couple of times after I was finished some episodes.

My Favourite Visuals

Winter 2017 didn’t have quite the plethora of visually appealing shows that previous season have had so the choice here is pretty obvious…

March Comes in Like a Lion.

march6b

While there are certainly shows with better character designs and better animation, March consistently delivered interesting and memorable visuals that added to the overall depth of the viewing experience. Couldn’t ask for much more from a story.

Reader’s Choice – Best Anime of 2017

Here it is:

Best Winter 2017

And yep,  March Comes in Like a Lion won. Possibly because I forgot to include Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju a fact which has been pointed out to me a number of times (that was actually an honest mistake as I thought I’d covered most of the anime people had been talking about whether I’d watched them through or not but I missed one). However, from the choices available March won.

march16

Of course Dragon Maid and Scum’s Wish both made a decent showing here and I knew before I started this that ACCA wouldn’t win a popularity poll given it really isn’t the kind of show that everyone is going to love.

Okay, these were my choices for favourite of the season so now I’d love to know yours. Feel free to share in the comments below and I’d love to know the reasons for your choices.

With that I’m leaving Winter 2017 behind and I’m now ready to face the Spring 2017 anime season.
