3D Kanojo: Real Girl Episode 3: The Outsider’s Perspective

real3c

Despite the missteps, this anime has something that makes it oddly interesting to watch. What did you think of episode 3?

Real3a

It is quite clear that Tsutsui isn’t the ideal male protagonist. He isn’t even a particularly likeable or sympathetic geek character. Yet for all his faults, there’s something kind of interesting about watching such an incredibly awkward guy slowly stumbling his way into developing an actual social circle. That isn’t to say that I suddenly want everything to work out for him as some of his actions are still kind of eye-roll worthy and self-indulgent, but for anyone who has ever wondered what they should do about a situation, or not gotten a social cue, or experienced an emotion and not known what to do with it, there are moments where a connection can be made. Moments. It isn’t exactly consistent.

Real3d

The really interesting part about the developing social circle is it put a focus onto one of his classmate’s relationships. As much as Iroha and Tsutsui are a cute kind of couple, there’s a time-limit and some real awkwardness still there. Still, seeing how they viewed the crush and ultimately how the two of them ended up dealing with the emotional fall-out was actually a nice moment for this series.

Real3e

I’m not going to sing the praises of this one as it is definitely problematic but I like the look of the anime, I like the characters or find them interesting enough to want to know more about them, and the occasional well developed moment raises this up enough that I think I’ll make it through the season.

3D Kanojo: Real Girl Episode 2: Equal Parts Like and Hate

real2b

Two episodes along and I still don’t know whether I’m enjoying this or not. Did you drop or keep this anime on your watch list?

Real2a

Honestly, this episode frustrated me. If I’d drawn a table I could have written down all the moments and bits of dialogue that were irritating or stupid and on the other side all the moments that were genuinely sweet or interesting and I’m pretty sure I would have ended up with a fairly even split. What that meant was I spent quite a few minutes of this episode contemplating killing the stream and then something would happen that would make me think, just keep watching. It isn’t exactly a fun viewing experience when you are teetering between wanting to bail and wanting the characters to just not be idiotic for two whole scenes so you can actually enjoy the moments that they nail.

Real2c

Visually, this is pretty unimpressive, with a lot of the crowd shots and backgrounds really lacking in detail and at times even the main characters kind of go off model a little bit. I think the one thing that is saving this from a drop right now is that while Tsutsui is undeniably a terrible boyfriend, he isn’t actually an abusive jerk. Sure, he is a jerk at times but mostly because of his own self-doubt and because he’s totally wrapped up in his own misery rather than because he’s actually trying to torment Iroha. It doesn’t make some of his dialogue any easier to swallow but at least his motives are mostly to avoid harm rather than inflicting it as we see with some male leads in romances.

I somehow doubt this is going to be all that great, but I’m still interested enough to go another week so I’ll see what happens next.

3D Kanojo: Real Girl First Impressions

real1c

Going in to this anime with no expectations probably helped my first impressions of this series because I’m probably going to go for at least a second episode. Your thoughts?

Real1a

From the synopsis I was almost ready just to pass on this one, however something about it made me hit the play button and I’m almost glad I did. While it isn’t an anime I’m going to instantly fall in love with, it did enough in this first episode to make me want to see a bit more of what it has to offer, and really that’s what a first episode should exist to do.

Tsutsui has one friend and does not like 3D girls, whereas Iroha is known for playing around and being an overly flashy girl. The two of these characters together make for a cliche meeting but they play it fairly well. Part of this is helped along by Tsutsui not being an overly pitiful character despite being a geek and loner. While he does have a few bouts of self-pity throughout the episode, he’s mostly a functional human and that makes everything that happens in the episode far easier to swallow.

Real1d

Iroha didn’t make a great first impression, but mostly that is because Tsutsui didn’t really give her much of a chance. By the end of the episode, while she’s not exactly leaping into the lead for favourite character ever, I have to admit, I’m a bit more curious about her circumstances and I wonder what she really does think about Tsutsui.

So this one, I’m going to give a little longer to find its feet and hopefully it continues to be interesting. What did you think?
