30 Day Anime Challenge: Day 30

30-day-anime-challenge

Day 30 and the day I’ve been dreading most on this challenge: Your Favourite Anime.

How on earth could I pick just one. I certainly have favourites that I go through from time to time and anime that I come back to time and again, but to pick one that I would think always is better than the others… I honestly don’t think I can do that.

Instead I’ve chosen some of my favourites to represent the various moods I have when watching anime and the shows that I love revisiting. I’ve got a nice mix below of old and new and I think it kind of shows my overall feelings as a fan of anime

It’s fair to say I missed a few shows that I might sometimes refer to as a favourite of mine from time to time. So yeah, this is a total cheat of a response but it was the best I could do. Here’s the list of anime selected above in no particular order:

  • Natsume Yuujinchou
  • Death Note
  • Noragami
  • Assassination Classroom
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion
  • My Love Story
  • Yuri on Ice
  • Snow White with the Red Hair
  • Bleach
  • Darker Than Black
  • Shiki
  • Soul Eater
  • Sailor Moon
  • Black Butler
  • The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Basically if someone said they were going to put any one of these titles on I’d pretty much be glued to the screen. When I can’t think what I want to do, one of these always crosses my mind to just turn on and watch. When things go wrong and I just want to get away from everything, these are the titles I think about. A number of them are the reason I became an anime fan.

I’d love to know your favourites in the comments below.

30 Day Anime Challenge completed and I should be back to normal posting (seasonal reviews and the like) from tomorrow but it may take me a day or two to actually get back into things. Thanks for following the challenge.

30 Day Anime Challenge: Day 29

30-day-anime-challenge

We’ve made it to Day 29 and we’re looking for my highest rated anime. This is going to be tricky given I do not actually use a rating system of any description. Still, if I narrow down my options by eliminating anime I know aren’t particularly well animated or well written but I just enjoy because they are fun… then I just need to eliminate all of the stories that are pretty much cookie cutter copies of every other story… narrowing it down. What about eliminating any story that has a character that just makes me face palm every time they appear on screen…

And I’ve got it!

Okay, I already know people are going to disagree with this choice but that’s okay given this is my choice.

I’m going to go with: March Comes in Like a Lion.

I was seriously tempted to go with Evangelion but to be honest, the convoluted story line and the symbolism that just goes a bit crazy at times kind of killed it. March Comes in Like a Lion is:

  • Beautiful to look at.
  • Filled with complex and fairly interesting characters.
  • Has a basic plot but is character driven.
  • Combines music and visuals beautifully to set the tone for the show.
  • Has a fairly strong emotional impact on the audience.
  • And is still kind of fun to watch.

I’d love to know your highest rated anime so please leave a comment below. We’re almost at the end of the challenge and I am almost back to start doing seasonal reviewing again.

30 Day Anime Challenge: Day 28

30-day-anime-challenge

Day 28 asks me which anime do I wish never ended? This is possibly the easiest question on this list as I’ve already more or less answered it previously.

Natsume Yuujinchou.

Seriously, the episodic nature of the show and the set up pretty much guarantee that the story can go on forever and the characters have naturally aged and grown as the story has continued and they can just keep doing that. It would be kind of cool to see Natsume graduate from high school and figure out how to balance his work life with his relationship with the supernatural. It would also be kind of cool to see if he ever manages to find someone to marry and start a family with. Of course that makes me wonder about what Nyanko-Sensei would do then but I can see Nyanko as the perpetual house cat looking after generations of Natsume. It would be so cute.

Okay, I just love this show and don’t really want it to ever come to an end.

What show makes you feel like that? I’d love to know so please share in the comments below.

30 Day Anime Challenge: Day 27

30-day-anime-challenge

Day 27 is tricky. Favourite anime movie? I’m going to be honest, I don’t watch a lot of anime movies. I’ve seen the usual Spirited Away and others but even movies that directly follow on anime series I don’t tend to watch.

Probably more due to lack of options than actually believing this to be the best anime movie, I’m going to go with the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Haruhi.jpg

Though even with a lack of options, this movie is actually really good. It has a great narrative arc and is almost self-contained (though prior knowledge is still kind of a must). It also gives some truly excellent character moments to several of the cast. Not to mention its beautiful.

I’d love to know your favourite anime movie below. Mostly because it might give me some ideas about which movies I should probably make an effort to watch at some point.

30 Day Anime Challenge: Day 26

30-day-anime-challenge

Day 26: Favourite Male Protagonist.

This challenge has definitely made it clear just how indecisive I am around this notion of favourites. Choosing one over all the others is actually really hard (and I am dreading Day 30).

Ultimately I’m going to go with a character that made me feel so much for him on his journey, who I wanted to pick up and hug, offer a word of support to, and then run the other direction so whatever horrible thing was about to happen to him never happened to me. Of course I am talking about Allen Walker from D Gray Man.

Allen Walker.jpg

Nice guy but avoids the trap of having that as his only personality trait. Very powerful but in no way overpowered given the enemies (and even the allies) around him. Everything about Allen is fantastic and this is a character I desperately want to be victorious one day but I kind of feel he’s a walking tragedy so I won’t hold my breath.

I did consider quite a few other characters including Ciel in Black Butler, Natsume from Natsume Yuujinchou, Rei from March Comes in Like a Lion, and even Sadou Maou from the Devil is a Part Timer.

Who is your favourite male protagonist and why? Please share in the comments below.

30 Day Anime Challenge: Day 25

30-day-anime-challenge

Here we are at Day 25, which means I am 5/6ths of the way through this challenge. Favourite female protagonist today. I could um and ah about this for awhile but I think it is pretty clear who I will end up choosing.

Maka Albarn from Soul Eater.

She’s book smart, strong, and just a fun character. She’s driven toward her goals and a hard worker. However, she is also surrounded by friends who make sure she doesn’t go too far and get too obsessed. Soul in particular is probably the perfect complementary character for her.

Still, Maka might be awesome but there are plenty of other characters I considered here. One that nearly gave Maka a run for her money was Shirayuki from Snow White with the Red Hair. She’s just an amazing female character. Now if they just gave her some kind of cool weapon…

Anyway, that’s my choice for Day 25 but I’d love to know who you would have chosen.

30 Day Anime Challenge: Day 24

30-day-anime-challenge

Day 24 – I love a good antagonist. That said, anime has some pretty terrible villains scattered throughout the many series so thinking about the best one is taking some effort. The obvious choice would be Makishima from Psycho Pass. He’s fantastic but I’m not 100% convinced he fits the role of antagonist (though that’s definitely a thought for another day when I have far more time).

makishima

This would actually be easier if it was just best villain rather than antagonist.

Okay, I’m going to go with Zoisite from Sailor Moon. Unlike so many other Sailor Moon mid-level villains, Zoisite actually seemed to really hate the scouts at times and that mocking laughter after getting the better of the scouts was fairly grating even to the audience. Realistically, Zoisite was a better antagonist opposite Tuxedo Mask and the two of them had some great moments on screen together, you know until Zoisite stabbed him in the back and was then killed by Beryl. Minor detail.

Zoisite.jpg

I know that was a weird choice but finding a truly antagonistic anime character who isn’t just an over the top overpowered villain is kind of hard. I’d love to know who you would pick.

30 Day Anime Challenge: Day 23

30 day anime challenge copy e1495940892299

30-day-anime-challenge

Day 23 and introducing my most hated anime character.

This was actually kind of difficult due to the fact that generally when I actually dislike a character, particularly a main character, I usually end up not finishing a show. Which means while I remember hating a character I remember very little else about them after the fact.

So choosing a character from an anime I actually really liked, I’d have to say Eiji Nizuma from Bakuman.

Nizuma.png

This character serves an incredibly important role in both the plot and the development of other characters and yet every time he was on the screen I either wanted to slap him, roll my eyes, or just close my eyes and beg him to go away again. He’s like the hyperactive toddler who has just discovered how to wave and he drove me totally crazy. It doesn’t help that he actually is a hard working genius. I appreciate that he does work at his craft and that he’s good at it, but please don’t make me watch him or listen to him. Probably the best thing about him is that he isn’t on screen all that much.

So tell me, which anime character do you hate?

30 Day Anime Challenge: Day 22

30-day-anime-challenge

I knew we’d get to an easy one eventually and Day 22 gives it to me. Day 22: Favourite romantic couple. This one is an easy guess for me and that is Shirayuki and Zen from Snow White with the Red Hair. A close runner up would be Sawako and Kazehayo from Kimi ni Todoke (and Kimi ni Todoke is my favourite romantic anime) but as a couple Shirayuki and Zen are just all kinds of sweet.

shirayuki and zen

I think what I like about Shirayuki and Zen the most is that neither one is a broken character being fixed or healed by the other. They are both hard working and generally nice individuals who just happened to find one another. They bring out the best in one another and support each other, lending a hand when needed, but neither one is ‘saving’ the other from anything as they probably both would have found their way if left to their own devices.

zenxshirayuki1

Seriously, cutest couple ever.

Over to you. Who is your favourite romantic couple?

30 Day Anime Challenge: Day 21

30 day anime challenge copy e1495940892299

30-day-anime-challenge

Welcome to Day 21 and we’re looking at my anime crush.

I’m going to be honest, I don’t really have one. There’s plenty of very cool characters and certainly some very good looking ones (they are drawn that way), but I don’t tend to develop crushes on characters.

If I was going to have an anime crush it would have to be Sebastian from Black Butler.

So incredibly good looking and competent. Okay, also a demon but that’s a minor point if we’re looking at a fictional crush.

If I’d answered this question back in high school, I’d have said Darien from Sailor Moon without hesitation. Note, Darien, not Tuxedo Mask. Darien because his personality has a bit of bite to it and yet he’s still a pretty nice guy. Tuxedo Mask on the other hand was preachy and didn’t ever actually do anything but swoop in, give a pep talk, and swoop back out. That’s when he wasn’t suffering from amnesia, being brain washed, or just unable to use his power for whatever reason the narrative decided was convenient.

Darien.jpg

So that’s day 21 done and we’re in the home stretch.
