After lots of reflection I’ve come to the conclusion I really don’t like Patreon’s model of ongoing monthly payments for blog supporters. Largely because I always felt like I couldn’t do enough to thank the patrons for their ongoing support, plus a lot of people really just can’t commit to an ongoing expense (particularly after 2020 and with the ongoing pandemic). So for 2021 I’m going to try something a little bit different. For the tl;dr version skip ahead.
However, let’s break down what previous monetary support has been used for because every dollar that has ever been generously donated and has been fed back into the blog in one form or another. The same goes for any money that has come through purchases made with affiliated links in the posts and advertising revenue.
The main ongoing expenses are ones that I’m sure all anime bloggers are familiar with:
- WordPress Plan
- Blog Domain
- Streaming service subscriptions
Other purchases and expenses have included:
- Artwork – One off payments for specific items such as my avatar as well as my newer expressive avatars.
- Advertising – Trialled a few ad campaigns though most didn’t seem to drive enough traffic to the site to be worth continuing.
- Software and various computer bits and pieces – While a lot of the technical stuff goes over my head and where possible I use free versions of software as I continue to work toward different forms of content I’ve had to get a number of upgrades including a significantly better microphone. These purchases occur when needed and when sufficient income has been earned through advertising on the blog.
- And I should probably mention that Irina bought me a stack of Ko-Fi’s in order to buy a lot of the Natsume manga books. Even though I was working toward buying them, she definitely sped up the process and I hugely appreciated it.
Blog plans for 2021:
- Maintain a schedule with at least 3 – 4 written posts per week for all my wonderful readers.
- I’m really going to work on converting a lot of existing content into audio for podcasts to try to expand my audience base and just to cater to some of my readers who would prefer non-text based posts.
- Largely I just want to work on creating engaging and interesting anime content and building a community of anime fans that want to celebrate and discuss anime.
And I really do have to thank all my readers who were patrons before I first paused and then discontinued my patreon site at the start of last year. Every patron who was with me at that time is still thanked and acknowledged on my about page with a link back to their site and that will remain even though I have no intention of starting patreon again.
What does that leave us with for 2021?
Well, readers always have the options of buying a ko-fi or using paypal donate to show their support spontaneously throughout the year. Again, I thank the readers who have used these features and you’ll find the links at the end of the post if you like these options. But, neither of these gives anything back to the reader, other than the warm feeling of helping out in keeping the blog going and my absolute gratitude and thanks. I really wanted to come up with an option that gave something to the person supporting the blog and I also wanted it to be a one-off rather than an ongoing cost. Most of us don’t know from week to week what is going to happen (particularly after 2020) so nobody needs an ongoing cost hanging over their head.
After much thought I came up with something simple and hopefully some of my readers will consider it as it will certainly help keep the blog going and growing in 2021.
2021 April – Post Sponsor Drive
So what is the goal?
We’re aiming for $200 during April with another drive in September.
Current total = $160
The 2021 April Post Sponsor Drive is really very simple. Those of you who are willing to support the blog this year simply select a post you want to sponsor and then use the link below to become a sponsor. Please ensure that I can contact you via the email address used for payment so that I can confirm the post you want to sponsor and also discuss what you want on your badge or you know, contact me before you sponsor so we can discuss. Also, if the post you have chosen initially had already been claimed I will provide alternatives or offer to refund.
To assist in exposure I will repost the post so that it is visible on the wordpress reader and share through social media as well as remove all other advertising (affiliate links and so forth) from the post that has been sponsored. You will also be added to the about page as a sponsor of the website.
Become a Sponsor
Choose any existing post on the blog to sponsor. At the top of your chosen post a badge will be added (example one pictured) with your chosen avatar, acknowledgement that you have sponsored that post, a brief description of the content you create and will link back to your blog, channel, product or whichever site you choose. Also – if you choose to sponsor 3 posts you will be able to choose a fourth post for free.
I’ve also put together a list of twenty of my most viewed non-episode posts if you are wondering which post to sponsor (ones that are struck-out have been claimed). Now, don’t feel limited to only choosing one of these but if you don’t have a particular preference these posts do all get consistent traffic. Again, feel free to find any review, feature article or top 5 post you’d like to sponsor. Or even an episode post but unless I’ve used ‘boobs’ in the title they don’t get as much traffic.
Alternatively, you can choose option two which allows you to pick an upcoming anime from the Spring or Summer 2021 season line ups (12 episode cap) that you want to sponsor. This means your badge will be at the top of all episode reviews, one feature post written in response to the anime and the full series review at the end of the season.
I’d suggest you could contact me before hand to discuss the anime prior to choosing this option as there are some anime I just won’t be able to watch and cover due to personal preferences and availability. For instance, Irina and I have already agreed to review two anime next season together so those titles would be unavailable.
Fruits Basket: Final Season
I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level
Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song
Contact me to discuss. You choose an upcoming series (12 episode cap) from the Spring or Summer 2021 line-up to be covered in episode reviews on the blog. In addition, during the airing season a feature post will be written, and after the series concludes a full series review will be written. At the top of all posts for the chosen series your badge will be featured (example one pictured) with your chosen avatar, acknowledgement that you have sponsored the content, a brief description of the content you create and will link back to your blog, channel, product or whichever site you choose.
For obvious reasons this second option is limited and should a few readers choose it I will pause this option until I’ve fulfilled those requests.
In case you are wondering about my stats, despite not posting for most of 2020 the site still had over 5000 views every month (except one which was in the 4000’s) and when I returned in January of this year it bounced back to 10,000 views for that month. Search engines drive the majority of my traffic with twitter and the WordPress reader being the next two biggest ways I get my content out. Pinterest is continuing to increase its number of referrals as well.
As always I want to thank you, my readers. I know that I dropped the ball in 2020 with the blog but the community have been incredibly welcoming as I’ve eased back into blogging this year. I’ve said it before but without you, my readers, there really wouldn’t be any point in all of the thousands of words and posts I’ve written since 2016 but you always make me feel happy and that all the time put into the blog has been totally worth it.
