Summer 2016 Week 6

Step right up, we’ve made it to week 6 of the Summer anime season. I’m going to be honest and point out that a number of the anime I’m following did not really amaze me this week. We’re at that point where they are consolidating points and characters rather than impressing the audience. That said, there were still some solid episodes to be found. Cheer Boys is not one of them offering a series recap at episode 5.

As always, I would love to hear your thoughts on the season below.

I Must Keep Watching

D Gray Man Hallow went for a fairly dark episode this week. It really made me feel this was D Gray Man again but I must admit this episode made me flinch a few times. I am loving this series and I’m really glad it’s back.

Alderamin on the Sky went for a flash back episode and still managed to deliver a fairly solid piece of entertainment this week. I’m loving the characters and I’m hoping the plot get’s moving again next week.

Orange dropped a fair revelation (though possibly a predictable one) at the end of this week’s episode. All things considered, it was a well paced entry in this dramatic series.

The Morose Mononokean gave us a fairly interesting episode as well though I’m wondering when we’re getting the reveal about what is actually going on with Ashiya.

Tales of Zestiria the X went somewhere new this week but delivered a really engaging episode despite the few moments of what-the at the start. Really enjoyable watch.

Lastly, Days is probably on notice as one that I may drop to the ‘On My Radar’ category. I’m still enjoying it but that’s all it is offering at the moment. It’s pleasant enough and considering it’s a sports anime the fact that it held my interest this long is pretty amazing but this week I found myself zoning out during parts of the episode which isn’t a good sign for it.

Still On My Radar

Alright, I’m probably being needlessly cruel to 91 Days (given it is a pretty amazing anime in terms of how it looks and how solid the story has been). My issue is I’m not really enjoying it and I’ve not focussed enough on it and now I’m starting to lose some of the plot threads (or at least I can’t follow which character is supposed to be helping which family).  I would still highly recommend this anime but in terms of my list, 91 Days is still on my radar but if I missed next week’s episode I probably wouldn’t lose any sleep over that.

Food Wars has delivered a conclusion to Soma’s most recent cooking duel but in honesty I just felt it was dragged out, plus we spent yet another entire episode in the cooking arena. This show was better in season 1 when we moved between classrooms, the dorm, the camp, the home town and faced all sorts of different challenges rather than just duelling cooks every single episode.

Momokuri also continued to be bland but sweet enough this week. Does anyone know how many episodes of this there are?

Lastly Cheer Boys went for a recap, at episode 5! Seriously, what is with that? Honestly, next week is going to have to be pretty engaging for this to not go to my close to dropped list.

Not Dropped But Close

When you set the bar low it is easy to rise. Taboo Tattoo actually delivered a pretty credible episode (when compared to the fare so far). It’s lifted it above Hitorinoshita this week but that’s not exactly an accomplishment.

Hitorinoshita continues to be plagued with character and pacing issues and possibly the biggest problem is none of the characters allow you to make any kind of connection with them and they are actively irritating at times.
