Summer 2016 Week 3

Alright, now that we are three weeks in I’ve kind of figured out what I’m loving and what I’m tolerating, and quite a few shows hit the chopping block. Still, Summer is shaping up to be more my kind of season than Spring so some of the dropped shows might get a resurrection if I get some time.

I’ve returned to a more categorised format from the shows ‘I must keep watching’, to the ones ‘still on my radar’, and then the ‘not dropped but close’ category as I feel this gives more information about how much I’m really enjoying something than simply saying this show is better than that one, etc. I am still listing the last episode I watched so that you know where I was up to when I placed it on the list.

As always, I would love to hear your thoughts on the season below.

I Must Keep Watching

This season seems to have a lot of shows that are just hitting the right mark for me. Though I suspect Food Wars is going to drop into simply on my radar very soon and Orange needs to do something about future Naho and her ability to convey information effectively.

D.Gray-Man Hallow is likely to stay where it is at the top of the list unless it takes a critical nose dive out of all narrative logic. And it isn’t that it is the best show – because if you read the other reviews out there you will already know it isn’t. Much like Sailor Moon Crystal, D Gray Man has a lot of get out of jail free cards due to the fact that I’m already in love with the series. As long as it doesn’t do anything too horrendous I’m going to just keep loving the fact that this series came back and episode 3 dropped way too many hints of future doom for me to walk away now.

So, my top picks so far are actually two shows I hadn’t really heard of prior to the Summer season starting and both kind of fantasy based. Yeah, they could both flatten out and not deliver on their potential but these opening episodes have been pleasant and interesting and I’m really quite hooked on both The Morose Mononokean and Alderamin of the Sky (seriously what is with the names of shows this season, they are so hard to spell).

Still On My Radar

Less here at the moment, and a few of these may even get pushed up into the must watch if they keep going. Particularly Tales of Zestiria and Days.

The other three on the list here (Sweetness and Lightning, Momokuri and Cheer Boys) are all probably just that little bit too sweet and not enough plot for me, but they are actually all quite charming and haven’t bored me with an excessively slow pace so we’ll see if they grow on me or if that charm wears thin. I am putting Sweetness and Lightning on notice though. While it is an excellent anime in almost every way, I just don’t think I’m its audience. So even though I haven’t moved it to the not dropped but close category, I may drop it anyway after the next episode.

Not Dropped But Close

Yeah, there’s not a lot to say about this lot. They’ve all been watchable but between clichés, poor delivery, over used joke, and too short a run time to really have an impact, I’m just not sure how much staying power they have. That isn’t to say these ones can’t improve after a slow start but I’m not really holding my breath here.

Cute High did kind of improve during episode 3, but it still feels like the joke ran it’scourse back in season one and the villains this time round aren’t really grabbing my interest.

  • Danganronpa 3 (Ep 1)
  • Mob Psycho 100 (Dropped at Ep 1 – probably return to viewing later)
  • Servamp (Dropped at Ep 2 – might give it another go if I drop some others but not overly interested at the moment)
  • Rewrite (Dropped at Ep 2)
  • The Disasterous Life of Saiki K (Dropped at Ep 1)
  • Ozmafia (Dropped at Ep 1)
  • Scar-red Riders XechS (Dropped at Ep 1)
  • Qualidea Code (Dropped at Ep 1)
  • First Love Monster (Dropped at Ep 1)

There’s not a lot to say about the dropped shows. They either didn’t grab me in the first episode (or they actively repelled me), or I just didn’t want to watch them as much as some of the other shows on my list and given time constraints something had to go. Servamp and Mob Psycho may get picked back up if the shows on my list take a downward turn.

There are still a few shows I haven’t tried (Amanchu/Ange Vierge/etc) but my list was already crazy long so I put them on hold. Again, if  I drop a lot of the others I might go back and revisit these ones.

After three weeks what are you definitely going to watch? What have you definitely decided to drop?

  1. I’ve been keeping my eyes on the simuldubs this season so I’m not paying as much attention to shows as they come out. However, food wars I feel like has really stood out among the shows I’m watching (when my non biased opinion is showing). Glad to see you’re enjoying it too
