Princess Principal Episode 1: This Might Be A Fun Ride

At the end of the 19th century, London, the Kingdom of Albion has been split into East and West sides by a giant wall. Five girls attend Queen’s Mayfaire, a conventional and prestigious school. Under the guise of regular high school girls, they act as spies under cover. Disguise, reconnaissance, infiltration, car chases… Each girl uses their own set of special skills to dart around the world of shadow.

This show was one of the few titles that has been getting quite a lot of praise this season that I actually have access to so I was looking forward to checking out the first episode. Even so, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it that much. It kind of reminded me a bit of Joker Game, but with a bit more energy and (let’s be honest) more cute added in to it. The combination might work but more importantly, it looks like we have a far more focussed cast so hopefully I won’t feel as disconnected from the show as I did when watching Joker Game.

I really like the set up in this first episode. There’s still a lot we don’t know about why these girls are spies or what really caused the conflict or what the end game is, but you don’t feel confused while watching these girls carry out their mission. While one of the girls is of the overly cute, squeaky voice variety that might get on my nerves, the others all seem quite interesting and I look forward to learning more about them.

That said, right from the word go, this show is making sure we know it isn’t all sunshine and roses just because young girls have taken the lead roles. This had some dark moments and it doesn’t look like we’re heading for a happily ever after any time soon. Definitely going to keep this one and see how it goes. It may not end up being amazing, but this first episode certainly hit the mark.

Thanks for reading.

    1. I agree, episode 2 was much better when I finally got to it, at least in terms of setting up a story and drawing me in. Episode 1 gave us a good look at the setting but didn’t really help us to understand the characters.

    1. I’m thinking this might end up being my favourite show that started this season. Of course, there’s not a lot of competition. While there’s plenty I’ve found to be okay, there’s nothing I’m really madly in love with so far this Summer season.

      1. Abyss is practically the only real competition… (And I’m in love with PriPri and Abyss.) Konbini might have come close, but it has so many pacing and execution issues.

        1. I think I just found somewhere Abyss is streaming legally in Australia. I’m going to see later today if it actually works or not but I might even get to watch it.

  1. Hmm, the mentioning of Joker Game really caught my interest. I quite liked that show, despite the ending and the direction the show eventually headed towards. But unfortunately this show is not available for me. Reall shame as for what I have been reading about this over on blogs including yours it sounds very cool 😊

    1. I’ve caught up on a few more episodes of it and I’m really quite liking it. I’m kind of wondering why episode 2 isn’t the first episode though given it seems like the actual start of the story.

      1. I actually don’t mind it being the second episode. I enjoy when directors jump back and forth between times because it makes things more interesting. The ending of episode one was EVERYTHING though! Also the opening song is beautifully done.

        1. Yeah, this show is one of my faves this season for sure. And those last few scenes in episode one were great. I like the mix of the steampunk and the very dark world combined with the adorable girls, it’s a very good mix. Especially since said adorable girls don’t exactly have the cleanest hands in the world.
