Panty Shots and Drinking Pee – This is Funny?

How Clumsy You Are, Miss Ueno Episode 1 Review

I actually ended up quite enjoying a lot of the short anime I watched in 2018. Space Battleship Tiramisu (season one), Skull Face Bookseller Honda-San, and Voice of Fox all entertained in their own way even if none of them are vying for position of best anime of the year. Short anime are their own thing and with limited run time they do what they can but by nature the stories they tell and their approaches are different. And a lot of short anime are gag comedy which is a genre that just doesn’t really appeal. How Clumsy You Are, Miss Ueno, as the first short anime I’ve come across in 2019 is exactly that and the episode left me wondering if perhaps I just missed something because even by gag standards it was pretty sad.

While plenty of people are discussing the problems of including slavery and rape in a story without dealing with the larger social consequences, it feels to me like this anime with its focus on a socially inept girl trying to somehow convey that she likes the boy, without saying it, and ending up in situations where she’s lifting her skirt up in the name of science, is a lot more immediately problematic than the fantasy repercussions of an isekai rape accusation. The thin pretence that her ‘device’ was perfect and wouldn’t allow the boy to see her panties (or lack of them because she declared she was wearing none) doesn’t actually change the fact that the set up here is that the boy is looking up this girl’s skirt and taking notes, and she is actively encouraging him to do so.

Part of my issue here is that the setting is supposedly a real world junior high club room in which case I’d first wonder where the supervisor is for this club. Secondly I’d wonder why we’re supposed to swallow not one, but three completely socially inept characters that somehow all come together.

Finally, I’d wonder who thought opening on a gag about drinking pee (purified or not) was somehow a brilliant move. Because if that’s the best you’ve got this show is in for a rocky ride.

I’m suspecting I’m not the audience for this one, though I will probably watch the second episode just to see if the jokes get any better or if the characters start vaguely appearing like more than just grotesque caricatures of overly-worn tropes, but pretty sure I’m not sticking this series out.

  1. For me, the humour is not in the ridiculousness of Ueno’s attempts to woo Tanaka – which would be funny if they ditched the scatalogical and pervy parts – but in the deadpan, oblivious reactions by Tanaka to this insanity.

I like that aspect of the silliness and that Ueno isn’t stable enough to try simple ways to get Tanaka’s attention but I do agree the material so far is a bit extreme, but as it’s only 10 minutes I can stomach it for now…

    1. If this was three minutes, I think Tanaka’s deadpan reaction to something weird Ueno was doing might be kind of enough, but at ten minutes given that’s really the only punchline it just isn’t enough and for me it certainly didn’t off-set the subject matter which just felt like it was pushing way too far.

  2. I’m usually a fan of gag anime like Osomatsu-san and the humour in that series can get crass but it also mixes in some wholesome storylines. Reading your review of this series, I’m not too sure if I’ll enjoy it but I’ll take a look for myself. XD

    1. Probably a good move. I just can’t think of a reason to recommend this one unless you really like short comedy and are desperate for a new one.

  3. Yeah, this was really the definition of squick for me, but you probably knew that already 🙂

I think you’re right in your observation that this series (or this episode, at least) is more immediately problematic due to its more real-life context. I think both this and “Shield Hero” both owe a lot of their problems to real-life wrong-headed ideas, though. Whereas “Shield Hero” probably could have been saved with a few key changes, There’s so little to this show that I don’t think there’s much to be done, lol.

I’ll be interested to see your reactions to a second episode!

    1. My reaction to a second episode will probably go along the lines of ‘Why did I decide to watch a second episode’ but I guess we’ll see in a week if that is my post heading.

    1. As I’ve said, I’m not the best audience for a gag comedy in the first place, but most gag comedies just leave me rolling my eyes rather than actually wondering why someone would think it is funny.

    1. I’m sure this won’t be the worst show thrown at us this season, though it is probably the worst I’ll watch a whole episode of (W’z got dropped five minutes in so no first impression there).

    1. Then again, coming off of last season where there were so many things I liked, this season is going to find it hard to stack up anyway.

    1. Maybe other people will find it cute and fun. I’m not the best judge of comedy given I find very little of it amusing, but I found this one pretty off. And honestly, the subject matter here definitely has me raising an eye brow.
