Mob Psycho 100 Revisited

So, I watched the first episode of this when it came out and was somewhat underwhelmed. The humour didn’t hit for me and the art style, while it is clearly different and interesting in its own way, didn’t do much more me either.  After reading repeated rave reviews of this show I went back and decided to try watching a couple of episodes together.

Review Episode 2 + 3

For me, these episodes were both more interesting than the first episode (and with the limited screen time Reigen got, they were a lot less annoying). That said, I still didn’t find this show particularly riveting. While the deadpan main character might work when I’m engaged by the support cast, in Mob’s case the support cast have all so far been truly horrendous. None of the, save Reigen who is really, really super annoying, have been given sufficient screen time to have any impact. As a result they all seem like one dimensional set ups for a gag that for me just never delivers.

The most interesting part of this show so far is the idea that Mob has had to shut down his emotions because of his psychic powers. That actually gave us a reason for the count down (count up) to the explosion and the explosion was actually well worth it. For about three minutes this show completely engaged me. However, three minutes of entertainment isn’t enough after three episodes and I’m going to stick with my original assessment and drop this. Even if it has an interesting concept at its core, if the delivery isn’t working for me than I’ll spend my time better elsewhere.

That said, I really think this is a show people need to watch for themselves, given its unique art style and the fact that humour is so incredibly subjective.

Mob Psycho 100 is available on Crunchyroll.

  1. I’ve still yet to watch beyond the first episode. Such was the hype that it wound up disappointing me. I’ll have to revisit it again, but there’s plenty more from this season I’m enjoying more.

    1. That’s where I was sitting. The first episode didn’t do much for me. I revisited after a few more episodes came out. There’s plenty of other stuff I’m watching and enjoying. Admittedly, this is better than either Taboo Tattoo of Hitorinoshita which I am still watching.
