Overview:
Tohru is a dragon who shows up to be Miss Kobayashi’s maid after some drunken incident in the mountains. Only, as a dragon, Tohru’s understanding of how to be a maid is a just a bit off.
Review:
I’m not going to lie, I really didn’t enjoy this first episode. It’s perfectly functional as a show and I’m sure some people would find it adorable but I just found the voices grating and the interactions between the characters pretty dull. It is a shame because I’ve been kind of curious about this one, but I don’t think I’ll be continuing to watch it. Probably the most fun I had during this episode was when the robbers came to the apartment but that lasted about a minute and while it was funny, I just don’t think a show has lasting appeal whtn a minor joke mid-episode is the highlight for you.

I also went in, thinking, “hm, will I like this?” but after watching a few more episodes I loved it.
The first episode doesn’t really give it a chance to shine, but if you’re not a fan of slice of life types, then it may not be worth continuing. I found the humour and the characters in general excellent. 🙂
I felt the same way. The show felt very dull when I tried it but that may just be cause I am not a fan of pure comedy anime.
Yeah, when it isn’t a style you particularly like the show needs to be really exceptional to hold your interest. While there is nothing really wrong with Dragon Maid, there’s just nothing really to keep me watching.
Ah yeah, I know what you mean. Konosuba isn’t my cup of tea either but I do enjoy the anime. It’s more unique compared to other comedies so I believe that is a reason it still holds my interest.
I also think that the first episode wasn’t very good, but it became better for me and turned out being one of the most enjoyable shows of this season for me, number one being Rakugo. But I can understand if people don’t like this show, as it has clear weak points. I’m just a sucker for Kyoto Animation’s Direction Style.
There’s definitely some very good points about the show as well, however overall it didn’t really appeal to me. I can understand why others would like it and there’s certainly a lot of potential in the set up during episode 1 (which I assume is built on later in the series).
“It is a shame because I’ve been kind of curious about this one, but I don’t think I’ll be continuing to watch it. ”
I appreciate your honesty, not just here but through the whole blog entirely
I’ve just never seen the point of not being honest when you are supposed to be reviewing something. I could possibly be more tactful sometimes but I kind of think there’s no point unless I’m honest.
For me, the first and second episode were pretty dull, but it did pick up after that. However, I don’t know how much you’d enjoy it since it does seem to fall into a nice routine as the anime continues. But at least you gave it a shot! 🙂
I will say that the dynamic between the characters changes significantly after the second episode, when Kanna is introduced, but even so, if you didn’t enjoy this episode then I can’t confidently say you’d enjoy it more as it went on. Thanks for giving it a shot though!
Yeah, I kind of thought early on that this show wasn’t really going to be for me (given the reviews I’d read), but I love dragons and so many people have loved this show that it was worth giving a shot to.
So based on this and what I’ve seen on your blog since I’ve been following you, I take it you’re not a huge fan of slice-of-life shows? Or is it just the ones this season that haven’t really clicked?
I’m not the biggest slice of life fan. A few in the category I love (like Natsume Yuujinchou or Clannad) but mostly I just get a bit bored by them.
