Some random creatures attack and maidens known as Toji’s defeat them. Given we spent most of this opening episode on a tournament between students I’m not exactly sure what else this story is about.
We seem to get at least one of these each season. The show that for whatever reason has some reason why a bunch of school girls need to fight something (whether it be an enemy or each other). And for whatever reason the girls need to do so while wearing school uniforms or the equivalent of an inappropriate for combat outfit. The thing is that some of these shows are alright so just because the premise is completely unoriginal and this first episode was pretty ordinary isn’t quite enough to know yet what this show might actually do so this is a wait and see.
The show starts us off with the military being completely unable to deal with what must be a common threat until the school girls show up and then they delay it while waiting for the special equipment to arrive. It arrives, by slamming itself into the road causing yet more damage, and the girl touches a glowing button with her sword and gets armour before taking out the enemy. It is all pretty standard and not exactly a visual spectacle, but it also isn’t a terrible opening.
We then spend a lot of time with Kanami and Mai who after a school competition are now selected as representatives in some larger tournament. The significance of this is not explained and given the way the tournament ends at the end of the episode it probably isn’t all that important.
We learn a little bit about the different styles and some of their moves but we’re still in the dark as to why only girls, why they are fighting and what they are fighting (yes, we have a name but that doesn’t tell us much), or even what the overall story is going to be. So, another episode before deciding on this one I think.

I watched it and I’m not sure if it’s a joke or serious. If it’s a joke I’ll deal with the campy mediocrity. If it’s serious, then I’m gonna nope right out of there.
I didn’t really get the impression it was a joke, but it is kind of hard to tell with this kind of show.
The show wasn’t a strict joke (like parody) I was just so dumbfounded by what was happening (the goofy prop designs and “sword fighting” animations that I was hoping the creative process started with “hold my beer”.
I looked at this when I was trying to figure out what to watch. As you said, we have one almost every seasons, and most of the time I find them to be rather uneventful or mediocre. That’s why I decided to pass on it. I’ll wait for you thoughts on the second episode before I decide if I wanna give it a shot. 🙂
While I didn’t dislike this episode, it didn’t do a lot to make me really want to stick with this show. But, I’ll see what they do next week before making up my mind about this one.
