Kakuriyo No Yadomeshi Episode 3: Watchable But Nothing Exciting

This anime shows of some fairly contrary characterisation in its third episode, but even then doesn’t really manage to raise the excitement beyond kind of interesting. What did you think of the episode?

I didn’t mind this third episode as it carried us through more of the hidden, realm gave us more of a look at the ogre, and set up some potential issues for later in the series. That said, it fails to really raise any kind of emotional tension and while certain events seem like they should be intense, it is all just kind of low-key. I did like the consistent use of the ogre’s gaze as in most of the first half of the episode, as he escorted Aoi around, he was constantly checking on her mood and reactions. While it does nothing to improve initial impressions of him, it shows he’s kind of taken the Tengu’s words on board and he is definitely trying a different approach to his whole getting married to Aoi thing, which does bode well for development as the story goes on.

What was less well received is the clear hypocrisy of the ogre protecting another ayakashi from being sold to a guy she doesn’t like. Given his own treatment of Aoi, clearly he has no reservation about buying and selling people. So his desire to intervene clearly stems from some other motive other than a moral sense of justice, unless he simply applies a different standard to his own actions. Either way, it leaves his character overall looking questionable. Either he has some reason for his actions, in which case he clearly knows his treatment of Aoi is unacceptable and we shouldn’t end up with a happily ever after. Or, he actually doesn’t realise he’s a jerk, and we shouldn’t end up with a happily ever after. Neither is a particularly satisfying feeling at episode three in what might end up trying to be a romance.

Anyway, this one may end up being reviewed for patrons. I’ll know by the weekend what the final vote is for the season.

    1. I haven’t really paid attention to its OP & ED which usually means it hasn’t grabbed my interest but I didn’t dislike it either. I’ll try and pay more attention next episode.

  1. I’m guessing there is going to be some other reason for him “buying” her, like you said with him being clearly against something like that I can see him having other intentions from the start.
This one is keeping me interested enough to keep going. Now that I’ve seen “Love is hard for an Otaku” that might be at the top of my romance choice for this season and it is only at episode one.

    1. I kind of wish I could see Love is Hard for an Otaku but don’t have access to it at the moment. It will be one I’ll have to look out for later.
