Junji Ito Collection Episode 5: Souichi is Just Really Kind of Annoying

Review:

Another mixed kind of episode with the first story about the house connected to other worlds having an interesting concept but then not really building on that concept in the limited time it had, and then another short story about Souichi. I’m going to be honest and say that while I didn’t mind the first episode and story with Souichi, this story was decidedly pointless and not in the least bit interesting.

Back to the first story though, there was some genuinely good atmosphere about the creepy house and the classmates showing up all weird and twisted. The scene in the classroom was probably the weak link with the most poorly animated fist fight in history (okay, exaggeration but I’m better it will be the worst fight for the year).

All and all, we could have scrapped the second story and just had more of this one and overall it would have been a far more satisfying viewing experience.

Thanks for reading.

  1. Certain types of horror don’t seem to translate into movies or shows. This seems to happen with Stephen King novels a lot. Ito’s art style is very particular and difficult to replicate.

  2. I totally agree with you. That second story was seriously pointless, and probably the worst this series has had to offer so far. I’m still hoping (probably against all hope lol), that there is going to be an episode that will blow us all away and will be truly creepy…but…I guess that is wishful thinking 😢

    1. I was happy enough with just weird tales but that second story was such a waste of my time. I really have to wonder if that is the best they can do with the material available.

      1. That’s what I have been wondering about too. I haven’t read the source material mind you, but I’m thinking that this series really has so much potential of only they would have a better creative team behind it.

        1. Also haven’t read the source but it has been talked up a lot so it makes me wonder if the source is over hyped or if this adaptation has been pretty poorly planned and executed.
