Izetta: The Last Witch Episode 1

Izetta Episode 1 Review:

I’m always kind of wary of anything that’s about ‘The Last’ of something. Mostly because they lie (there always seems to be another one somewhere that shows up at a critical plot point). That aside, I kind of enjoyed this opening episode. It’s pretty enough, there’s some nice music, and the Princess is actually kind of active (though I wish every other character would stop defaulting to tom-boy to describe her).

As you would expect from a fantasy version of World War 2, things are going badly and the Princess is seeking allies but it is altogether too late as she learns her country is already being invaded. Add in soldiers chasing her, attendants getting killed, creepy major guy with the coffin that turns out to have a witch in it, and it all kind of looks like it could be either interesting or generic fantasy stuff but either way it feels like it is worth following along for a bit.

Izetta: The Last Witch is available on Crunchyroll.

  1. The first episode left me disappointed, especially as I really wanted to enjoy the show as the rest of the fall season is leaving me a bit cold.

Nevertheless, there’s enough interesting (or potentially interesting) aspects to keep watching.

I’m looking forward to your future thoughts.

  2. If they keep doing more pseudo WW2 stuff I’m a guaranteed viewer. On the topic of the actual anime, I don’t think we got enough in this first episode to get a good grasp on the feel of it.

  3. I started watching this as well. So far, I’m on the fence like you. There is enough to keep me interested though. Likewise, the graphics and music are lovely. I like that the princess is not some weak, helpless person; though I agree with you… the tomboy remark is downgrading.

  4. It’s just one episode, but this is already a tentative drop. I’ll give it a few episodes to right itself. This show comes off as generic, with far too much exposition and “amnesia” tropes for my liking.

      1. Yeah me too, this is more of a catch up season for me personally to be honest, since I missed out on most of last season when it was airing.

But Izetta and the new WIXOSS season are what I’ll be looking out for mostly.

        1. I’m starting to look back at things I’ve skipped previously and I think I’m going to have to pick a couple up to fill in my schedule at this point.
