Free! Iwatobi Swim Club First Impressions

Overview:

Guys who used to swim together are swimming together. Kind of.

First Impressions:

I put off watching this series despite repeatedly being told “you have to watch it”. However, I recently caved in and gave episode 1 a go. I don’t know if I’m pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the first episode or annoyed that I’m falling in line with the hype that has endlessly surrounded this series. While I’m not thinking this series is going to become my favourite ever (not even close), I liked the characters and enjoyed learning a bit of their history and watching them go about their high school lives.

My issue will be that I’ve seen a thousand reviews, memes, AMV’s, etc, etc, etc, around this series so actually a lot of the scenes I’ve seen before, just not in any kind of order. Still, I’m going to watch a bit more and see how I go with this one.

  1. I’m not really into slice-of-life sports anime, I like my sports more fiery/passionate, but tbh, I’m watching it mostly for the fan-service and that they’re cute *_*
Plus, the animation is gorgeous, whatever everyone else says!

  2. While not the biggest fan of Splice of Life or Sports Anime, I really enjoyed Free. (It might help that I enjoy swimming.) I only got around to watching it after all the hype died down, out of sheer curiosity. Turns out it was a whole lot of “Feel Good” at a time I could use it. Talking about it now makes me want to watch it a second time this year.

Have to say all the OP and EDs are sweet, both visually and musically.

  3. Ahaha! Same here. I put it off, and had some misgivings after enjoying yhe 1st episode. But in the end, I just said the heck with it and focused on enjoying myself thoroughly because that’s what’s important to me.

  4. Vic Mignona (Rin) said at a convention earlier this year “I like girls, but I love me some Free.”

I wondered if there was some compelling anime beneath the flotsam of fangirl bait, but have yet to dive in myself. I think I’ll wait to see what washes out from your experience.

😀 okay I’m done with the puns for today.

  5. It is weird coming to the kind of cultural juggernaut series like Free! It’s kind of like wading into Sailor Moon and DBZ territory last decade.

I’m glad you like it though. I find it a real life-affirming, fist pumping and moving series. And I’m all about Rin 😉

  6. Glad you found something good out of it.

I personally wasn’t keen on the series at all, and it’s in fact one of my least favourite shows of all time (mostly because it embodies everything I dislike about SoL tenfold)

That being said, it’s nice to see it caters to someone other than the fan girls 😛 I look forward to hearing your final thoughts!

I'd love to know what you think.
