I enjoyed this episode a lot more than the previous ones. I think the main reason this felt like an improvement was we only spent the final few moments of the episode in the arena. The rest of this episode was a return to seeing Soma try and test food and talk to his friends (and enemies) searching for inspiration and a way to improve. The focus on a single character and their efforts over a week (rather than swapping between two characters in a single cook-off) was far more engaging and while we are now back in the arena heading into next episode, it kind of feels like we need to be there rather than the show saying and here’s our next battle.
Food Wars is available on Crunchyroll.
