Fastest Finger First Episode 1: This Counts as Sport?

fastest1b

Overview:

Bunzou High School is welcoming its new first-year students. One of them, Koshiyama Shiki, is chosen to participate against his will in an impromptu fast-buzzing quiz meet by the president of the Quiz Bowl Circle. As a quiet boy who loves reading and doesn’t want to stand out, Shiki is overwhelmed, but his classmate, Fukami Mari, is able to hit the buzzer and answer questions before the full question is given. As he watches her, Shiki realizes that there’s a point in each question where the answer becomes certain.

Review:

I love quizzes and puzzles and collecting mindless trivia and while from a narrative point of view this first episode was nothing special, I was having fun guessing the questions as well. I could probably enjoy that for most the series if they keep that focus whether or not the story goes anywhere.

The characters are so far pretty flat but not unpleasant. We did have a girl tripping and flashing underwear sequence but otherwise the show has been remarkably restrained in the fanservice department. Instead we are just dealing with the usual stereotypes of geeks, sporty guys and hot girls. All of which have the potential to actually become interesting characters but this first episode was strictly introductory so the only real thing to latch onto is the quiz itself which for me is enough.

  1. Hmm, okay…I really like quizzes, so I am adding this one. I haven’t yet seen a single episode of any of the new Animeseries for this season, (a thing I’m not usually doing anyway, as I always wait for series to be completed), but still this sounds cool. Adding it to the Crunchyroll que 😊

  2. Like you, I was having enough fun just answering questions. Characterization isn’t the best but it’s not terrible.

A few episodes in this does get kind of interesting as they explore the various strategies people use so I’m enjoying it thus far.

    1. Hopefully I’ll catch up on a few more episodes of this one soon. I was supposed to last night but then just didn’t have the energy to focus on subs after work.

      1. It’s a super nerd thing, and not widespread (at least in the US). IIRC, back when I was in it only about half the schools fielded a team. I was always surprised it didn’t take off during the trivia craze that swept the US in the mid 80’s.
