Tag Time: Why I Still Love Anime

I have to thank Raistlin for tagging me in this. I’ve really enjoyed seeing the responses other bloggers have written for it, and then Raistlin’s response made me really happy with what I’ve achieved as a blogger. I think this tag is highlighting something a lot of us already know and that is that the ani-blogging community are amazing. There’s so much positivity and passion for anime out there and a general willingness to share experiences and this tag is yet another way that we can bring that community closer together. So with that out of the way we’ll get on with actually answering the tag.

Rules:

  • Write a post about why you love anime. It could be your favourite thing about it or one of your favourite things about it, it doesn’t matter which, but just pick one!
  • You can get as personal or as impersonal as you like. You might want to write about how anime helped you through a tough time or something that it has taught you or you might want to write about just how much fun you’ve had watching it over the years. Your choice.
  • Nominate three bloggers to do the same.
  • Link back to this post. I would love to see what you’ve written and I may compile a list of my favourite entries further down the line.

Response:

I’ve said a number of times on my blog that anime isn’t necessarily my passion. My passion is actually for stories. And yet, even I have to admit that my preferred medium for stories these days is definitely anime. I haven’t bought a non-anime DVD in nearly two years (there’s a few small exceptions) and even the few TV shows I’ve watched recently that haven’t been anime focused have struggled to hold my interest. I still devour books but even with those I’m much more focused on light novels and even branching into manga now. It wasn’t a conscious decision and it isn’t as though I believe anime is better than any of those other mediums. But it does make me wonder why at 33 I am so incredibly obsessed with anime.

D Gray - Road and Allen

However, I know the answer to that as well, whether I want to admit it or not. Watching anime reawakens the sense of wonder inside of me. That belief that anything is possible and might happen. The desire to see where things might go and take us even when the end result might not be great. It has been a long time since a movie, TV series or book outside of anime has had that impact (again with some exceptions because there have been a few, but they are few and far between).

soul_eater_049

When I’m watching anime, or talking about anime with someone, or writing a post for my blog, I feel lighter. Even if I’m tearing something apart because it was terrible, I’m excited because something I’ve watched has made me have such a strong emotional response. Anime makes me smile and laugh and flinch, become tense and cry. It moves me emotionally and it draws me into its world even if for only the twenty minutes of the episode.

Soul Society7

And then, because we have such an incredible online community, I get to talk with others and relive those feelings and share them and be apart of a discussion around something I love. It would not be an exaggeration to say that watching anime and my blog have really kept me going over the last few months when things haven’t been going so well for me with health and other issues.

I love anime and I am thankful every day that I am part of such a community.

The One Liner Challenge

I’d like to thank Average Joe for throwing this challenge my way. I’ve done this one before (check it out here) but it was really great fun so I decided to try my hand at another round of it.

The Rules:

1. Accept and thank your challenger(s) by linking back to their post.
2. Make a post of one-sentence summaries and/or roasts of at least five anime.
3. No spoilers!
4. Link back to The Awkward Book Blogger so she can see your post.
5. Challenge as many or as little people as you want!
6. Have fun!

The Response:

Yona.png
Princess loses father and control of Kingdom but gains a hot harem of dragon boys (oh and freedom and stuff).
Yuri On Ice Title
Hard working professional ice-skater with no self-confidence gains new coach and love interest and becomes second in the world proving beyond all doubt that falling in love is more fun than training.
title4
One class lost a classmate and instead of getting therapy just pretended they were still around and thus doomed every following class to pain, misery, and death.
Death Parade Title.png
Cool music masking the fact that underlying this whole story is the message that life and death just aren’t fair and you might as well get used to it.
Bleach Title.png
Kurosaki Ichigo can see ghosts, death gods, and hollows and he’s going to prove he can defeat any and all challengers in the name of saving whoever currently needs saving.

The Challenge:

Okay, now for the next round of victims challengers. No obligation I get that some people don’t like tags or have done it before and some people are busy. Still, I’d love to see your responses.

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: BREATH OF THE WILD

Nominated for the Unique Blogger Award

Apparently, I’m unique. A huge thank you to Eumiiboo for the nomination. Now if you haven’t checked out their blog you really should because while I think they are covering one or two seasonal shows, they write some really great posts on manga and just some great discussion pieces. Great blog to follow if you are not.

I’m definitely learning that if I just don’t close the post that I’m nominated in, I’m actually far more likely to remember to post my reply because I’ve got a tab open in the back of everything else I’m doing reminding me to actually do it. Hopefully this system will mean I won’t neglect so many in the future (though, I get that it is far from perfect).

Cells at Work Episode 7

Rules:

  • Display the award!
  • Thank the person who nominated you, and post a link to their blog on your blog. (Try and include a little bit of promotion!)
  • Answer the questions they’ve written for you!
  • Nominate bloggers and give them three questions in the spirit of sharing love and solidarity within our blogging family

Cells6a

Questions:

01. If you were to describe your life based on an anime character, who would it be, and of course why?

Probably some sort of cross between Ririchiyo from Inu x Boku with a little bit of Rei from March Comes in Like a Lion and Yuri from Yuri on Ice (yeah, I have some issues I need to sort out with self-confidence). Really though I am drawn to all three characters because I find their struggle reasonably relatable, in a much more low-key manner) and I really respect the work ethic of all of the characters. watching Ririchiyo take an entire night not to finish drafting a letter because she kept restarting was something I could definitely understand.

02. Now let’s try to get personal, what was one of the anime’s you’ve watch that left an impact on your life, or perhaps change your view in a certain point in your life.

I’d have to go with Sailor Moon. It was among the first anime I saw and I watched it when I was younger. But it was more that I finally found a group of female heroines who genuinely fought real danger and not some watered down version of villains, and they actually killed their opponents rather than making friends and playing nice with them (at least some of the time). I think Sailor Moon was my gateway to then falling in love with characters like Buffy, Xena, the cast of Charmed and so on. At the time it was just such a novelty to have that sort of female character in a story, particularly one that, in Australia at least, was being marketed to kids.

03. Imagine, you have been chosen to create a crossover between three anime series, which would it be and why?

Okay, so Syaoran and Sakura from Tsubasa Chronicles happen to travel into the world of Aincrad from SAO during their journey looking for Sakura’s memories. They meet Kirito who can’t ignore the damsel in distress aspect and so he joins them dragging Asuna along for the ride. After they defeat a floor boss and retrieve the feather they jump worlds again, this time ending up in the Black Butler universe where Ciel is holding a bunch of Sakura’s feathers and isn’t planning on handing them over any time soon. Sorry, who doesn’t want to see a fight between Ciel and Sebastian with Kirito and Syaoran? That would be straight up awesome.

I Nominate (but feel free to ignore):

Questions:

01. What story made you incredibly angry and why?

02. If you could rewrite the ending to anyone story which would it be and what would you change?

03. Easy one – favourite opening theme song ever?

Thanks for reading.

Brotherhood of the World Award Part 3

I must be getting better at this as I definitely got this nomination turned around faster than most (or it could be that Steins;Gate didn’t air and I had some free time I wasn’t anticipating). Whichever way, I would like to thank Average Joe for the nomination.

Rules:

  • Thank the person who nominated you and link back to their blog.
  • Answer the questions sent to you.
  • Nominate around 10 bloggers (3 is around 10).
  • Create your own set of questions for your nominees and display the rules.

Phantom in the Twilight Episode 8

Questions:

01. Which western produced cartoon do you think would work best in an anime format and why?

Does Archer count? I’m going to be honest, I don’t watch a lot of western produced cartoons nor do I really think things that aren’t anime need to be presented in anime format. Still, I think Archer could be kind of fun as an anime.

02. Which novel series do you want adapted into a movie or show?

I’d really love to see Tracy Hardings ‘The Ancient Future’ trilogy turned into at least a tele-movie at some point. It would be visually fantastic to see the story play out, though they would probably need to do some deep cutting of the plot to actually get it down to something manageable within a movie. That, and some of the stuff in the third book probably wouldn’t go over so well with a wider audience so might need to be hollywoodified to actually make it successful. Still, just the thought of seeing the characters brought to life would be pretty cool. If not this series, then I would have to say more or less any of David Eddings book series would make for a cool movie or TV show.

03. What candy is your favourite and why?

Do I just say chocolate? Actually, I’m pretty hooked on minties as well as m&m’s so maybe just anything with sugar counts.

04. What fictional universe would you most want to live in and why? P.S You would be integral to that universe.

Let’s go with Sword Art Online, because the plot armour is strong with that one for the main characters and that sounds good to me if I’m integral. Unless I’m the person who dies first to bring home the tragedy. Oh no.

05. In an essay of no more than 300 words, if there were any anime you wish had been written differently, what would you have written?

Let’s bring back Kado: The Right Answer.

Kado12c

Only this time, after the issue with the Wam is resolved through japan handing over the ones provided because they can make their own, instead of introducing further devices and the like, let’s actually just deal with the way unlimited power actually changes humanity. Also, let’s spend some episodes dealing with the clear change in Shindo due to the fact that he was the first human Yaha-Kui ZaShunina processed. And then, let’s not make ZaShunina some comically bad villain but let’s actually just have him be genuinely curious about humans will respond to these advances and changes.

And let’s erase the time travelling future daughter who deus ex machina’s the heck out of the ending. instead, let’s just see how Japan and the world progress, build a conflict between either nations or some kind of economic upheaval due to the new power source, and use that as the final boss to be overcome.

Seriously, up until the midway point this show was excellent. The next third was passable and the anime still could have pulled off its ending. The final third was a train wreck that should be destroyed.

06. Who’s your waifu or husbando and why?

I think I’m going to pass on this one. Though if you just want a crush, Sebastian always works for me.

Brotherhood of the World Award Part 2

I want to thank RossiRoad for nominating me. I don’t think it’s taken me quite as long to respond to this one as to Ya Boy Jack’s, but it has still taken probably a bit too long to get around to this.

Rules:

  • Thank the person who nominated you and link back to their blog.
  • Answer the questions sent to you.
  • Nominate around 10 bloggers (3 is around 10).
  • Create your own set of questions for your nominees and display the rules.

DemonLord8a

Questions:

01. Who is your favourite comedian and why?

Well, I’m not much for comedy at all, but if I had to pick one I’d go with Tim Minchin. Mostly because he worked on the Matilda stage play and I just really enjoy some of his music. Still, for the most part I’m not big on comedians.

02. What do you do that you would describe as noteworthy? As well as that what do you do that is so unnoteworthy to be in itself noteworthy?

That’s a fun question to read aloud. About my only noteworthy trait other than a fast reading and typing speed is a very good memory. It is one of those things that mostly just annoys people though when you remember stuff they’d rather you just forgot.

As to something I do that is unnoteworthy… that would be most things. I’m a fairly invisible human and I’m actually okay with that.

03. What is something that you want to get into but just haven’t been able to?

I don’t think there is anything in particular. I tend to do or have done most things I’ve wanted to. The biggest issue is of course having more time to do the things I love. Though I would like to be much better at learning languages because I always thought it would be fantastic to be able to read and listen to things in their native language and understand rather than relying on translations.

04. If you could learn/obtain one skill instantly what would that skill be?

Is this allowed to be fantasy because I’d love to throw teleportation in to the mix, or telepathy. Um, if it had to be a real skill, maybe I could go with learning how to actually style hair at some point. I’m pretty hopeless at that.

05. You have two machines. One can take you into the depths of space and you can travel across the universe. The other is a time machine which can take you to whatever point in time in the past or future. Which do you choose and why?

I have zero interest in space travel. This world is full of more than enough to keep me happy so realistically I would choose the time machine. And if I had to choose I’d go into the future because I can always experience the past through stories, and i’m very curious to know how humans go.

06. What do you do job/school wise?

This one I’m going to pass on. I work full time and do a lot of overtime (like way too much). I spend too much of that time at a desk and in meetings. And that’s about the extent of talking about my job that I want on my blog.

Questions:

01. Has your blog ever affected you positively in your personal life, aside from the benefit of being able to write?

I think my blog has made me more open and expressive than I was. I really struggle communicating in real life and blogging has helped me to become a bit more open. I still find real world conversations incredible taxing and get quite tense when I have to engage in them with people I don’t know very well, but I think it has gotten a little better since becoming a blogger.

02. What time period in history do you find most interesting?

I’m not super into any historical period (prefer mythology over actual history in the first place) but in terms of what I have studied the most probably the British Industrial Revolution. The transformation from a agrarian society to a more urbanised one and the factory model is interesting in its own way and a lot of the issues we are still dealing with come directly from developments during this period.

03. What is the most interesting place you’ve been?

I think anywhere can be interesting depending on your frame of mind and who you are with. I loved travelling around Japan, but equally I have a lot of fun visiting small towns in Queensland that some people would say don’t have anything in them (and they would be right and wrong at the same time about that). One place I’d love to have longer in would be London because the museums there are amazing and I didn’t get to spend enough time visiting them.

The One Liner Challenge

Thanks GeekOut South West for the nomination. I’m terrible at getting around to these tags and have a few others that I still haven’t responded to, but with Full Metal Panic not airing an actual episode this week I had an empty slot in my schedule and this looked like it would be a lot of fun.

  • Accept and thank your challenger(s) by linking back to their post.
  • Make a post of one-sentence summaries/roasts of at least five books/manga/anime/games.
  • No spoilers!
  • Link back to The Awkward Book Blogger so she can see your post.
  • Challenge as many or as few people as you want!

Okay, let’s take on this challenge. I’m going to take on anime, though part of me is tempted to do this challenge again for books or games at some point. I don’t think I’ve read enough manga yet to do the challenge with that, unless BL counts in which case the one sentence summaries will all end up more or less the same.

VampireKnight4
Tortured teen love triangle occasionally interrupted by vampire/hunter politics.
Soul Eater.jpg
Feisty teen book worm kicks butt with transforming human weapon – and has daddy issues.
black butler.jpg
For the price of a soul get one pretty boy butler who can do literally everything perfectly.
Kamisama Kiss.jpg
Down on her luck Nanami goes from being homeless to being a god in one day with added perk of pretty fox boy servant.
Sailor Moon.jpg
Why wouldn’t you call on a clumsy, ditsy, crybaby and a group of middle-school girls to save the world from the forces of darkness?

I’m not actually going to nominate anyone specifically given my terrible track record of getting around to answering nominations, but I would throw the challenge out there to anyone who is interested in this. It was actually quite a bit of fun.

One Lovely Blog Award Nomination – Thanks Arthifis

I’ve been nominated by the lovely Arthifis for this award. Thanks for the nomination and hopefully you enjoy my answers.

Celebration

Rules:

  • Share the link of the blogger who has shown love to you by nominating you.
  • Answer the 11 questions they ask.
  • Nominate 11 bloggers for the same award in the spirit of sharing love and solidarity with our blogging family.
  • Ask them 11 questions that you are dying for the answer to

Questions:

01. Do you share your birthday with one of your favourite anime characters?

I did not know but apparently I share the same birthday as Teito from 07 Ghost and Crowley from D Gray Man. Neither would be my favourite character but that’s still kind of cool.

02. Following on from that, do you share your birthday with a character you dislike?

Not particularly, though plenty I’ve never heard of.

03. If you could be the protagonist of an anime, what type of protagonist would you be and what would you call yourself?

Honestly, I can see myself being just like Morioka from Recovery of an MMO Junkie, except maybe slightly more functional outside of my house (very slightly).

MMO3b

04. Which pet peeves do you have?

Too many to list, though my current one would be people who overtake unsafely on rural highways. Some people seriously do not respect their own mortality which would be fine except that their choices seriously impact on others.

05. What kind of trait is a red flag when it comes to an Anime that says to you right away that you won’t be finishing this one?

Really stupid comedy, particularly toilet humour. Just does nothing for me, though in fairness that is true of all types of stories and not just anime.

06. As you know I’m doing the Hunger Games: Anime Edition at my blog… If you had to choose ONE character from Anime to compete in the “real” hunger games to win which one would it be and why?

Sebastian from Black Butler. Who is actually going to beat him? Not to mention, if I was watching the Hunger Games, that’s what I’d like to see.

Sebastian5

07. Have you ever deleted a post completely after writing it and don’t publish it at all? If yes, what was the theme and why?

Regularly. I always have a lot of post ideas and some of them when I read them back are pretty stupid. Usually I delay the posting date. Then I rewrite. Then I delay again. If I get to another total rewrite I usually just salvage any material from the post that is usable and scrap the post.

08. Would you accept the challenge to write about something you never write about? Let’s say you only cover Anime and someone comes to you and asks for you to write about what do you think about astrology… Something like that!

I love to write. I started writing about anime at the suggestion of someone who knew I was unhappy that I wasn’t writing anymore. So, I’d pretty much write about anything provided I was in the mood at the time.

09. What are 3 positive traits about you that immediately come to mind? and 10. On the other hand, tell us one thing that you would like to change about yourself and why do you think you need to change it.

Um… Hard working? This one is kind of a struggle. Always aspiring to improve? Oh, enthusiasm. I have a lot of enthusiasm. Okay, this is why I can’t write a resume or sell myself or my blog particularly well. I actually told someone at an interview once when asked what I felt my assets would be as an employee that I was ‘mostly functional as a human’.

So what would I like to change? I’d like to be more willing to take risks and go after the things I want, but given my general craving for stability I doubt that change will happen.

11. What anime are you planning to watch from the spring season?

Not 100% certain yet but hopefully I will finalise a watch list by the end of next week.

The Nominees (not 11 and no obligation):

The Spooky Red Head – Does some great lists on their blog.

The Lily Garden – Well, you probably all know Remy Fool already, but if you don’t, their blog is awesome, check it out.

Amiranda Reviews – This is a blog I only recently started following but I’ve enjoyed their reviews so far.

The Ani-Messenger – Some strong opinions on some anime but don’t shoot the messenger.

A Reluctant Hero – Always entertaining and most recently been focused on Harry Potter.

Questions, Questions, Questions:

  1. Toast or bread?
  2. Anime with the best food?
  3. If you could only have one book or DVD with you on a deserted island, which would you take (assume you can watch the DVD)?
  4. Coolest anime fight ever?
  5. Favourite non-anime franchise?
  6. Feelings on the Avengers?
  7. Aliens finally come to earth, what do they look like?
  8. Twitter, Facebook, or other?
  9. Headphones or speaker?
  10. How many times have you changed your ringtone?
  11. Geekiest thing you own?

Thanks for reading.

Nominated for a Blogger Recognition Award

First up a huge thank you to Fiddletwix from Anime Madhouse for the nomination. I really appreciate it. Now, given in the rules it asks me to give the history of my blog and I’ve kind of done that a couple of times now, most recently here, and then it asks for advice for new bloggers, and I’ve kind of done that a lot too, I’m actually not going to follow the rules but I did want to take a moment to recognise some other fantastic bloggers out there and their contributions to the great community on WordPress.

Unfortunately, I haven’t included everyone who deserves a mention, there are just too many people, so please feel free to add other bloggers who deserve some recognition in the comments below.

I have included the rules so if you would like to respond to this award, they are down the bottom of the post.

Recognition:

Irina (I Drink and Watch Anime): Running a fantastic blog and spreading positivity through the community. Also, putting up with my erratic schedule as we try to write another collaboration. She is definitely deserving of the god status that was bestowed upon her through the very official twitter channels.

Raistlin: Let’s be honest, you probably already know Raistlin. however, outside of being an excellent supporter of everyone in the community, he runs an amazing blog covering movies, board games, TV shows, and of course anime.

Keiko’s Anime Blog: Gives some great thoughts on the shows of the season. While our watch lists seldom have much in common, I enjoy following each season through with Keiko and I particularly enjoy their weekly round-ups.

Where-ever-I-Look: Want anime coverage but would also love to see TV and movies covered with depth and thought? This is the blog to check out with a huge number of posts coming out each week covering a variety of media.

Jon Spencer Reviews: Again, most of us probably know Jon Spencer as he runs his ABC polls, reviews anime, started the creator’s showcase, and is incredibly supportive of the community.

Never Argue With A Fish: Presents some series reviews with interesting observations and a clear opinion. Never afraid to say what they are thinking and well worth the read even when I don’t agree.

Floating Into Bliss: For something a little more thought provoking than episode reviews, this blog continues to put out some very interesting articles that are thought provoking.

The Visualist’s Veranda: You want a critical review with a clear and honest point of view supported by great reasons? This is the blog for you. Kapodaco isn’t one to play nice when something doesn’t work but their passion for anime (and other media) is on clear display.

Mechanical Anime Reviews: Consistently interesting posts on a range of anime and ideas. Scott puts in a lot of thoughts, even taking content down when he’s not happy with the result and reworking the post.

KawaiiPaperPandas: Some really thought provoking episode reviews as well as a range of other great anime content to check out on this blog.

Lethargic Ramblings: Not afraid of unpopular opinions, Lethargic Ramblings posts some personal and thought provoking content on a range of anime issues as well as their thoughts on shows and games.

Arthifis: They are a relative new-comer but they are fast making their presence felt in the aniblogging community and I really hope that they are here to stay.

Marth’s Anime Blog: Marthaurion was one of the earlier bloggers I came across and he continues to post some really interesting episode commentary. I love it when I happen to be watching the shows he is covering because it really adds something to the viewing experience to catch Marth’s take on the episode.

A Nerdy Perspective: Recently hit 100 followers and continues to put out some excellent content following some seasonal stuff and also writing some interesting articles.

The Rules:

1.Say thanks to who nominated you and leave a link back to that persons blog.
2.Give the story or history of your blog.
3.Give two or more pieces of advice for new bloggers.
4. Nominate 10 other bloggers and link their blogs.

Thanks for reading.

Nominated for the Versatile Blogger Award

The Rules:

-Display award
-Thank the person who gave this award (and include a link to their blog)
-Share seven things about yourself
-Nominate bloggers of your choice

Thanks:

I’d like to thank ospreyshire for this nomination. Now, if you don’t follow them, please go check out the link and their blog. Actually blogs. Ospreyshire runs multiple blogs to cover different topics and I have no idea how they manage it because that would be an organisational nightmare, so nothing but respect for their ability to seemingly do so without a hitch.

Seven Things:

Franxx5e

01. I hate spiders that drop from ceilings. A spider in a web in some tree isn’t going to bother me. Nor is a spider just kind of crawling along doing its thing. But a spider above me that might drop down, will freak me out. And yes, this is because of numerous experiences of spiders doing just that.

Mummy5f

02. I have always wanted a dragon that would stay small enough to fit on my shoulder. Seriously would be the cutest thing ever, particularly if it would breath flames at people who annoyed me. My kitten did used to ride on my shoulders when I would try to get ready for work but then she got just a fraction too big so now she sits on the window sill while I prepare. Still, shoulder dragon. Must have item in the future.

damepri5a

03. I love confetti. And bubble wrap. And glitter. This is something that surprises a lot of people about me because they think I’m too serious for these things, but it is impossible to be unhappy when it is raining glittery confetti if you have some bubble wrap to pop.

04. While I can cook (I usually claim a lack of ability), I get bored very easily while preparing food so have many mis-fires due to not paying attention, walking away and forgetting about something, or just because I stop reading the recipe mid-way through the process and just kind of throw stuff in. Sometimes it works out and my ‘concoction stew’ is one of my best dishes now – named by the poor person I inflict it on. It looks like a witch’s brew but it tastes pretty amazing.  At the very least, it will clear out your sinus issues with the amount of ginger and garlic that goes into it.

05. I sometimes come off as cynical or pessimistic because I like to point out the issues with an idea. It isn’t actually the case as I’m genuinely an optimistic person who wants the best to happen. I just know that pointing out the issues early on is the best way to avoid them and that can usually lead to a good outcome. People who misunderstand that about me, like to gloat later about how things worked out. I just kind of shrug and let them gloat knowing that they only avoided x, y or z because I pointed out that they hadn’t put anything in place to deal with it.

06. I never need to be woken up. Mostly that is because I don’t really sleep well in the first place, but I’m a huge morning person. If I set an alarm, no matter how tired I am, I will always wake up about twenty minutes before it goes off.

07. I always feel like I am behind when it comes to what is going on. I know that isn’t true, but I feel like I miss so much and then am always playing catch up. The problem is, by the time I catch up something new has happened and then I feel behind again.

The Nominations:

Sorry, but I’m letting this one end here for now. I’m pretty sure most people I thought of have already had a nomination for this one.

Thanks for reading.
