Unique Blogger Award

Okay, it has literally been forever since I”ve responded to one of these due to my already hectic blogging schedule so I do want to thank everyone who has nominated me and apologise for not really getting around to responding. That said, this nomination came from Thero159 on A Reluctant Hero, so a big thank-you for the thought.

The award rules, which are as follows:

  • Share the link of the blogger who has shown love to you by nominating you.
  • Answer the questions.
  • In the spirit of sharing love and solidarity with our blogging family, nominate 8-13 people for the same award.
  • Ask them 3 questions.

Thero’s Questions:

01.  Why did you decide to start blogging?

I’m pretty sure I’ve answered this one before but basically to have someone to talk to about anime. My main purpose is finding and participating in a community of people who just enjoy stories and like to discuss them. So far that’s been going pretty well and I really have enjoyed meeting new people through blogging.

02. If you could talk to yourself from the past, what advice would you give?

I would hope I would be smart enough not to try to second guess my actions and that I’d leave my past self alone. Maybe some things didn’t work out brilliantly, but I have no way of knowing if altering my actions would make things better or worse so might as well leave it all alone. Though if I had to give advice and I was talking to a young enough me, I might point out that while blue seems like a cool hair colour, as it washes out it kind of goes milky green and isn’t exactly flattering on anybody.

03. If you could visit any fictional world/place, where would it be and why?

It would have to be The Library, from Doctor Who. Seriously, every book ever written. Sign me up. If it also contains a DVD library I might never ever leave. And yeah, I know it didn’t work out so well in Doctor Who but I’d try to visit the library before all the death and disaster. It hardly happened on the opening day.

Now I am going to be a little bit of a killjoy here and not pass on the nomination. Mostly because I’m not sure who has already been nominated at this point. However, another big thanks to Thero159 for the nomination.

Thanks for reading.

If you enjoyed this post and like the blog, consider becoming a patron to support further growth and future content.

Nominated for the Blogger Recognition Award

Yes, I know I leave too long between being nominated and responding to these things.

I want to thank all of the following for nominating me:

I may have missed someone so apologies. I really am thankful for the nomination and I am happy that my blog is being read and enjoyed.

The Rules

Thank whoever nominated you and provide a link to their blog

Give a brief story of how your blog started

Give two pieces of advice for new bloggers

Select up to 15 other blogs you want to give the award to (Sorry, but I’m passing on this for the time being)

How I Started

Pretty sure I covered this in a previous post but essentially I was looking to talk to people about anime and wasn’t really finding the discussion boards or groups on Crunchyroll particularly inviting. A friend of mine suggested I write a blog because they knew I hadn’t been writing much recently and they thought it would get me typing again. Two birds, one stone, and 100 Word Anime was born. The word limit was imposed to encourage me to write. I knew I could write 100 words on any anime episode so there would no excuse not to write. Now of course the problem is keeping episode posts short because I usually go way over. Mostly though the blog wouldn’t still be here now if it wasn’t for the people I met through blogging. I love reading the posts of others, people following the same shows, people following different shows, and I love reading all the different opinions and talking with people about anime. That’s pretty much why this blog still exists.

Two Pieces of Advice

Don’t listen to me for advice?

Um, everybody already stole the advice about interact and be part of the community. This is hard.

Okay. Number 1 – Express an opinion. The posts I most enjoy reading on other blogs are ones that express and support a point of view. It’s all well and good to recap the events but how did you feel about it or what are you thinking? That’s what makes the post interesting and uniquely yours.

Number 2 – Have fun. For me, blogging is not my job it is something I do to wind down from my job and to further my hobby of watching anime. Therefore if I’m not having fun I have to wonder why I would still be doing it. I love that my first thought after watching an episode or a series is instantly how am I going to write about this. I love that my next thought is I wonder what everyone else thought. I think having fun with your blog and with your hobby is really important.

Right, so I passed on passing the award on, not to be a pain but just because I’ve done a few of these recently and while I can think of 15 bloggers I’d love to recognise they’ve either been recognised or I gave them a different award recently. Thanks again to everyone who nominated me and I hope you all keep reading my blog.

Unique Blogger Award Nomination

I’d like to thank Weeabootaku for nominating me for this award (a fair while ago now but I’m only just getting around to it, sorry).

The Rules

  • Share the link of the blogger who has shown love to you by nominating you
  • Answer the questions
  • In the spirit of sharing love and solidarity with our blogging family, nominate 8-13 people for the same award
  • Ask them three questions

The Questions

01. What anime character do you most relate to and why?

This changes on any given day but mostly I would answer Ririchiyo from Inu x Boku. Socially awkward individual who overthinks everything and becomes paralysed in social situations kind of sums up my teen years perfectly. Fortunately, I grew out of the worst of these tendencies though I definitely still understand exactly where this character is coming from.

02. What fictional setting/universe would you most like to live in?

No Game No Life’s world (Disboard) would be pretty cool. I like games and the rules are really clear and there’s a definite purpose for being there. That said, the possibility of losing makes it not quite so appealing. Same with Aincrad in SAO (losing there would kind of suck). So, taking that on board, I’m going to have to go with Clarines (Zen’s Kingdom from Snow White with the Red Hair). Not the most exciting choice granted but it would be like living in a Disney movie with a perfect sunset every day.

03. If you could swap lives with one person, real or fictional, who would it be and why?

I’m not really big on the whole life swapping thing but I would probably have to pick Leeloo from The Fifth Element. She’s nearly unkillable (given the situations she manages to survive) and can memorize the entire history of the world in about 24 hours.

And because it took me so long to post this I was also nominated by D Talks Anime. Thanks for the nomination. D’s questions:

01. If there’s a zombie apocalypse, would you rather become a zombie during the first wave of infections or survive (to possibly be eaten by zombies)?

I don’t really think I’d get a choice on this one. I’d probably hide out in my house and hope that living in the middle of nowhere worked in my favour but in honesty my only survival strategy for zombies is to trip someone else and run for it. So no, I wouldn’t really like to become a zombie early on but depending on the nature of the outbreak who knows what would happen. I assume we are talking viral zombie apocalypse and not mass mind control.

02.Five anime you plan to watch?

Hunter X Hunter because it has been on my list forever. Fairy Tail because I don’t even remember how many episodes I was into it before I lost track and moved on but I loved it (I think I was at around episode 60). Drifters because everyone keeps telling me it is amazing. The second season of xxxHolic because until recently I didn’t know that was a thing. Lastly I’m putting a rewatch of Bleach here because I’m currently very slowly working my way through it with a friend (they only do like two episodes at a time and its usually a couple of weeks inbetween sessions – we’ll be watching it for the rest of our lives at this pace).

03. Your least favourite and favourite time of the day?

I’m a morning person (as in once I wake up, I’m awake), which kind of explains my hitting the internet at 4 and 5 most mornings. Essentially from when I wake up until my alarm actually goes off is my time to watch anime, read blog posts, write posts, and whatever else because I refuse to do work before my morning alarm so that’s my favourite part of the day.

My least favourite time of day is between 2 and 3 in the afternoon. Mostly because I wish I could take a nap then and my brain feels all sluggish. I get a second wind soon after but that hour would be the perfect time to take me out if I were in some sort of action film because it is definitely when my senses are at their weakest.

My Nominees (Sorry if you’ve been nominated before or you don’t like these, feel free to ignore.)

My Questions

01. The modern world ended but you have a working TV and DVD player. What three DVD’s did you save and why? (Don’t question why you have a working TV, you just do.)

02. Name a story you would like to see adapted into an anime that hasn’t currently been done? (Novel, movie, play, legend, whatever)

03. Favourite opening line of any story ever and why?

Nominated for the Liebster Award

Thanks for Elisabeth O’Neill for her nomination (ages ago) for this award. This is my second time responding to a nomination for this award and I want to thank everyone who has nominated me at some point.

  • Post the award in the post.
  • Thank the person who nominated you.
  • Answer the 11 questions they’ve written for you.
  • Nominate 11 people (give or take) and give them 11 different questions to answer (Sorry but I’m going to let this one go this time).

 The Question:

01. What started you off writing? Not necessarily blogging, but being creative in writing down your thoughts.

I’ve always loved writing. Mostly fiction. This is the first year I’ve really focussed on writing reviews or anything other than fiction so it has been an interesting transition. What started this? I’ve just always loved words and written words are awesome. As they are described in ‘The Dark Crystal’ writing is ‘words that stay’ and that is something that I think is amazing.

02. Which anime is the most special to you? Doesn’t have to be a favourite, just one that has the most meaning for you.

Genuinely no idea on this one. It really depends on my mood and what is relevant in my life at any given moment as to which anime I would answer this with. Right now it would probably be My Little Monster because of the moment when Shizuku faces a question she can’t answer and for the first time she just tosses it aside. That fits some of my current real life situation where I have a few things I need to let go of because I’m just going around in circles and getting nowhere. But, next week it will probably be something else.

03. What are you most looking forward to right now?

For my blog, I’m looking forward to making it to May 2017 (1 year). Although I am also looking forward to catching up with a few people over the holiday period.

04. You can keep any fictional animal as a pet, as fantastical or normal as you’d like. Which would you choose?

I want a shoulder dragon. That’s all. Just a dragon that can sit snugly on my shoulder (like a small cat) and can blow fire at anyone who annoys me. I’d be a very, very happy person if I could have that.

05. Poof! Sparkle sparkle. You are now a magical girl (or boy, if that’s your preference) with a maximum of three powers at your disposal. What would they be?

impenetrable shield, ability to rewrite reality at will, and an endless supply of chocolate. Okay that third one was trite but after the first two I didn’t really need any other power.

06. You’re heading off on an adventure. Name your fictional weapon of choice.

Soul from Soul Eater. Someone to talk to and a weapon. Of course Hyourinmaru (Hitsugaya’s weapon from Bleach) would be an excellent second choice.

07. What’s the silliest thing that makes you laugh?

Horror. I have a really warped sense of humour and I find most horror movies hilarious which is why I enjoy them so much.

08. If you could be best friends with any fictional character, who would it be?

Right now, Shizuku Mizutani. But again, this answer will probably change next week.

09. Is there something you wish you could fix?

I’d really like to have either 20 or 30 hours in a day rather than 24. It would be so much easier to divide up tasks it we had a round number of hours in a day. And a ten day week. 7 is really not a good number when trying to figure out when things should happen. While we’re at it, let’s just make the year either 300 or 400 days and I know someone is going to tell me that will mess up the sesaons but most of us aren’t farming these days and as long as the calendar clearly indicates when the next season change will occur I don’t think it is going to cause too much of a problem.

10. Here are two lists of four nefarious anime characters, one for male characters, one for female. For your own personal harem, you can choose either:

  • Light Yagami from Death Note
  • Vegeta from Dragon Ball Z
  • Lelouch Lamperouge from Code Geass – assuming he’d already used his Geass on me and I was now immune.
  • and Hisoka from Hunter x Hunter

  • Queen Beryl from Sailor Moon
  • Yuno Gasai from Future Diary
  • Ragyo Kiryuin from Kill la Kill
  • and Caster from Fate/stay night

11. Now, for each character in the list you selected above, who would you:

a) date: Light

b) marry: Lelouch

c) ignore: Hisoka (haven’t watched Hunter x Hunter completely yet – or much at all)

d) throw off a cliff: Vegeta

As I said at the start, I’m not nominating anyone at this time because I’ve responded before and I’m pretty sure most people I’d be about to nominate have already been nominated. Still, I quite enjoy thinking through the questions.

Nominated for the Sunshine Blogger Award

I’d like to thank Lethargic Ramblings for the first nomination. Despite their continuous claims to being lazy they have a very active and interesting blog so definitely worth checking out and following if you haven’t already.

A couple of other thank-you’s for nominations.

Thanks to D from D Talks Anime for their nomination. D does some great reviews, however my favourite posts from D are their discussion pieces where they look at the ideas presented in anime. Again this is a great blog to check out so if you haven’t already you definitely should.

Thanks to Cauthan who also nominated me.  Cauthan does some great reviews and episodic thoughts and is one of my must visit blogs so if you haven’t visited this blog, go check it out.

And thanks to Tessa on All About Anime for their nomination. Tessa seems to do a little bit of everything on their blog with news, reviews of anime and some manga, and recently their responses to the 30 day challenge. Definitely a blog to visit.

Another thanks to Prattle for nominating me. Prattle is still pretty new but often gives me something to think about with some of the current shows in their let’s talk posts so if you haven’t stopped by their blog it might be worth a look.

Finally, a thank you to Raistlin0903 for their nomination. Raistlin has been a great supporter of this blog and a regular commentor for a while. Their blog is also great to visit with a range of reviews of anime, movies, boardgames etc. If you haven’t checked them out already, you should head over to their blog.

The Rules:

  1. Thank the person who nominated you in a blog post and link back to their blog.
  2. Answer the 11 questions sent by the person who nominated you.
  3. Nominate 11 new blogs to receive the award and write then 11 new questions.
  4. List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award logo in your post and/or on your blog.

The Questions (I’m kind of combining both Lethargic Ramblings and D’s here):

01. Your opinion on the manga vs anime discussion?

I’m all about anime. I’ve said it before on my blog that I just don’t do manga, though I have read a couple in desperation to find out how a particular story has developed. I just don’t enjoy the medium. The thing is, I am a voracious reader but manga slows my reading pace down and I lose immersion because I’m tracking between images and text and not really taking in either.

Honestly, this one all comes down to personal preference, however I will say that telling someone an anime isn’t rubbish because the manga is good is not a valid argument. The manga could be off the wall amazing and it still won’t improve a poor adaptation.

02. What’s your all time favourite Anime series and why?

I really don’t have an all time favourite. My most common answer to this would be the original D Gray Man series. However, my love of it probably came more from the fact that at the time I had maybe 20 – 30 series under my belt and D Gray Man was incredibly different from anything I was watching. It had the frantic energy and battle sequences of Bleach with the darker and more serious tone (at least the overall plot) of something like Death Note and for me, at the time it was exactly what I was looking for.

That said, most of my love for it now probably comes purely from nostalgia because objectively looking at it, while there are still some really incredible things about the series, it doesn’t do all that much that you can’t find elsewhere (though perhaps not that same combination).

Other favourites include Bleach, Sailor Moon, Death Note, Darker Than Black, Angel Beats, Baccano, and pretty much whatever grabs my fancy at the time.

03. What’s your favourite Anime genre and why?

Again, this one is hard to answer. Looking at my DVD collection, I definitely favour darker anime. Anything leaning toward supernatural, horror, psychological or thriller is usually a winner. But, I have a whole bunch of stupid high school romances, slice of life comedy, sci-fi, straight action, and magical girl series as well so like the last question, I really just watch whatever grabs my fancy at the time.

04. The anime character you hate most?

Excalibur from Soul Eater. Hands down, most irritating character ever. There are characters who are written badly, and characters that are annoying, and there are villains who do horrible things, and none of these characters will ever induce the same amount of aggravation that Excalibur can in his brief appearance in Soul Eater. It does not help that you realise he is supposed to be annoying and the other characters are annoyed by him too. From his ridiculous character design, to his affected way of talking, to his total lack of relevance to the story,  I really hate Excalibur as a character.

05. What’s the most important aspect of an Anime series for you? (Eg – Setting, script, themes etc).

I would say it is a combination of character and story. I don’t mind plot driven anime with fairly shallow characters and I don’t mind slower stories as long as the characters are interesting and have sufficient depth to hold my interest. The other elements can make the experience better or worse but ultimately whether I watch something or drop it will come down to whether I am interested in the story or the characters.

06. A story/song that always makes you cry?

Angel Beats.

Yes, I know it is working very hard throughout most of the second half to stomp on your heart and it isn’t really trying to disguise what it is doing, but it still works. I cannot watch the final episode without being in tears.

07. What’s your main reason for watching Anime?

As it says on my about page, I love stories and anime has yet to bore me as there is always something new and even when you are getting an old story they continually find new ways to present that story and to surprise the audience. That said, I engage with almost any kind of story (book, video game, movie, TV show, anime, etc). As long as it is interesting and well told I’m in.

08. What’s your favourite thing to do outside of Anime and Blogging?

In all that free time that isn’t work or anime or blogging? Um… gaming? No, that’s pretty much the same thing. Reading? If I have to go for something outside of my house, I’d have to say travelling.

09. The last complete anime you watched/manga you read?

Gangsta. I was busy and it is short. Plus I realised I hadn’t written a review on it yet so decided to take some notes so that I could add it to my review list once I’m done with Summer 2016 anime.

10. If you had the choice of eating only one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Chocolate. Was there ever a doubt?

11. What’s your biggest fear/phobia?

Well, we already established that I have water issues though mostly I would say that I’m not big on risk in general.

  3. If you could change one thing about your favourite anime series what would it be?
  4. Least favourite genre (anime/tv series/books/anything)?

Thanks again for the nominations. I had a lot of fun answering these.

Nominated for the Liebster Award

Thanks to Pink-Chan on Pinky’s Palace for nominating me.

What is a Liebster Award?
Well, it’s an award that typically recognizes up and coming bloggers, by helping others discover new blogs and facilitate community building.

How does one get it?
In order to receive a Liebster Award, you must be nominated by a fellow blogger.

Here are the rules:

  • Thank the person who nominated you and answer the 11 questions they’ve written for you.
  • Nominate 11 people and give them 11 different questions to answer.

What is your favourite game genre?

Probably RPG but I also kind of like turn-based strategy games and the occasional shooter.

What is your favourite book genre?

Fantasy and Sci-Fi. Within fantasy I prefer high fantasy and paranormal stories and within sci-fi I have a real thing for survival stories.

What region do you prefer for comics? (Asia, America, Europe?)

None of the above. I’m not much for comics, manga, or any written text that is combined with visuals. I like to read novels or I like to watch TV. Don’t like the inbetween.

Why did you start blogging?

I answered this question when I got the Entertainer Blogger Award but essentially I’m just looking for people to share a love of anime with.

What is the trashiest game you played or book/comic you’ve read?

The trashiest game I played would probably be Vampire the Masquerade. I don’t think it has to be that trashy but I went with a character that seduced most people to get around conflict. It got pretty trashy.

Have you ever tried surströmming and if not, how do you think it tastes?
Have you ever tried mämmi?

No clue.

What is the most disgusting (tasting, looking and/or smelling) national delicacy you know of (where you live?)

I’m just going to go with Vegemite and call it a day. That is not food no matter what people say.

What is the funniest word you have heard? (And if not in English, what does it mean?)

I love defenestration (throwing someone out a window). I love that there is a word for this and I loved when I first read it in a David Eddings series and someone mistook the meaning of the word with fairly amusing results.

Please share one personal thing about you. Why that one in particular?

It’s probably become obvious by now but I am an absolute control freak. I like things to go according to plan.

In the console war, where do you stand?

I’m definitely for Nintendo but in honesty I haven’t really played console games for awhile (I do have a Wii but it is most definitely used more for socialising than for anything resembling serious gaming). Still, I went from the SNES to the N64 and they were my main consoles growing up.

Okay, I know that’s only 5 people but most of the people I thought about nominating were already nominated elsewhere.

While I’m at it, Cat on Another Gaming Day also nominated me for the versatile blogger award. Thanks for that. I’ve been nominated elsewhere since but I forgot to save the links. Sorry but thanks for the nominations.

  • Show the award on your blog
  • Thank the person/people who nominated you
  • Share 7 things about yourself
  • Nominate 10 blogs

7 things about me:

01. I love the colour red.

02. I’m a picky eater.

03. I don’t have a favourite style of music.

04. I can type up to 120 wpm but to ensure reasonable accuracy usually have to slow down to around 90 wpm.

05. While I can write about anime all day apparently thinking of 7 things to share about myself is difficult.

06. I have a preference for darker storylines but feel that they need to have some sort of overall message or theme that they are conveying.

07. Sarcasm is my go to defence when I’m feeling uncomfortable.

Nominations (and yes I am short again):

Thanks again for both of these nominations. I tried to remove people from the list who I knew had been nominated but I may have still doubled up on some. Sorry.

The Entertainer Blogger Award

Thanks to Pink-Chan from Pinky’s Palace for nominating me for this award. And I also want to than Two Happy Cats for their nomination.

I supposed to:

  • Write a post including the award picture.
  • Nominate 12 other bloggers who are funny, inspiring, and of course ENTERTAINING!
  • Add these rules to the post.
  • Thank the person who nominated you and leave a link to their blog.
  • Finally answer the questions below.

This is my first time doing one of these so let’s give it a whirl.

Why did you start to blog?

I really wanted to be part of a community of people who loved anime. While I have the odd person or two who will discuss specific shows with me and can be talked into watching one or two anime series from time to time, I live in a small town so conversation about anime is difficult. I originally tried the Crunchyroll forums but kind of found you either didn’t get a response or were met with people who just wanted to tell you why they were so much smarter than you and why your opinion was wrong. One of the few people who did respond to a comment I made in a positive way also had a blog linked to his profile and I decided to give the blogging community a go. So glad I did.

What is your favourite book?

Way too many favourite books. Pretty much anything fantasy or old school science-fiction (Eddings, Pratchett, Harding, Asimov, Bishop, Anthony, etc). As I say in my about page, I’m a prolific consumer of stories and I’m not too fussy about the medium. Recently, my book preferences have started moving to crime, mystery and the occasional paranormal romance. Not for any specific reason but I just found a lot of new sci-fi to be fairly flat and fantasy has gone more to low fantasy (set in the real world with magical elements) rather than epic high fantasy stories. So while I still read sci-fi and fantasy I tend to do a lot of second hand book buying.

What do you dislike the most?

Ignorance. If you don’t know, ask. And listen to the response.

What is your favourite food item at the mall?

I have to modify the question. What is your favourite food item at the shopping centre food court? (Sorry, the Australian in me couldn’t help it.)

Then my answer is rubbish anyway. When I lived somewhere that had a food court, my favourite food was either sushi  (if it was from a chain that actually made it fresh) or a juice (if I could get it freshly made).

What is your favorite pastime?

Other than immersing myself in stories?

Probably travelling. I really enjoy getting to see something different and take a million photos of it that I will probably never look at again.

Honestly, I don’t know who has already been nominated but I’m pretty sure most of the people I initially thought of have already posted this award. Sorry if I skipped you and you hadn’t been nominated yet.

  1. Cain S Latrani
  2. Neko-desu Reviews
  3. Mirror Purple
  4. Believe in Geek
  5. In the Cubby Hole

And, yes I know that is only 5 nominations and it is supposed to be 12 but as I said, I just don’t know who has already been nominated.
