Anime for the Season: Spring 2018 Preview

spring2018

As we transition from the winter to the spring season it is once again time to do a taste test of the season before finalising a watch list by week 3. I’m changing up the format for these weekly overviews this season so hopefully you don’t mind. Mostly, I felt the weekly overview was a duplication of the reviews in mini-form, so I’m now trying to make it more just an overview of what I’ve been watching and some general thoughts on the season.

What I watched

3D Kanojo: Real Girl (Episode 1)

Real1b

This one kind of surprised me. I wasn’t planning on trying it and really expected it to end up on the dropped list. We’ll see how long it lasts before I drop it or whether it can remain kind of charming for the season.

Dances with the Dragons (Episode 1)

Dragon1c

This anime is almost definitely going to be dropped. I’m kind of hoping episode 2 delivers something amazing because fantasy with dragons works for me, but this first episode was pretty hopeless in every aspect of the show.

Darling in the Franxx (Episode 12 – Reviewed for patrons)

Franxx12f

Darling in the Franxx turns its attention back to Hiro and Zero Two as we continue into the second cour of this anime. While this remains interesting, the ongoing small problems with plot and character keep this one from being really great.

GeGeGe No Kitaro (Episode 1)

GeGeGe1b

Strange name aside, this anime gave us a pretty decent first episode. Nothing overly special, but entertaining enough and the mix of yokai and modern technology could be interesting as the season progresses. We’ll just have to see what this does.

Kakuriyo No Yadomeshi (Episode 1)

Kakuriyo1c

This first episode I found really interesting and it looks like this show is definitely going to appeal to me, but I’ll wait and see what the next episodes do before I declare it definitely on the watch list for the season. Still, really enjoyed the set up here and the main character is kind of interesting.

Record of Grancrest War (Episode 12)

Grancrest12a

Who would have thought that taking a week off for a recap episode would work in a show’s favour. This anime has come back fairly strong as we enter its second cour and hopefully that is a sign of things to come.

Space Battleship Tiramisu (Episode 1)

Tiramisu1a

I’m not sure this one will last long in my line-up but this first episode certainly entertained even if it doesn’t have a huge amount of substance. We’ll see what it delivers in episode 2.

Spiritpact: Bond of the Underworld (Episode 6)

Spiritpact6a

I’m really loving watching the ongoing development in Keika and Tanmoku’s relationship and this episode continued to develop this aspect as well as revealing more about Tanmoku’s past. This continues to be a strong second season of a show that seems to have found its feet after quite a few missteps.

Tada Doesn’t Fall in Love (Episode 1)

Tada1b

This was a reasonable starting episode but late developments have made me a bit cautious about my expectations. I don’t know if this one is going to stay on the watch list and episode 2 is going to have to do something if I’m going to continue with this anime.

Tokyo Ghoul: Re (Episode 1)

Ghoul1b

Not 100% sold on another season of this anime but as normal curiosity is over-riding common sense so here it is on my line up and the first episode was neither particularly good or bad. We’ll see what it delivers.

Episode of the Week

Spiritpact6c
Spiritpact Episode 6 – I’m really enjoying seeing Tanmoku’s past and I’m hoping the resolution to this arc is suitably dramatic.

Character of the Week

Kakuriyo1a
Aoi, from Kakuriyo No Yadomeshi, for standing up for herself and taking sensible actions to deal with her situation.

Dropped

Comic Girls (Episode 1)

Nothing particularly wrong with it other than it definitely isn’t to my taste. Going to pass.

Love To Lie Angle (Episode 1)

Even at only three minutes, this was more of a time commitment than I was willing to give this concept. The voice work didn’t help much either.

Magical Girl Ore (Episode 1)

Maybe no one is surprised this one quickly hit my drop list but I just found this first episode pretty tedious and so I say goodbye.

MEGALOBOX (Episode 1)

This anime actually looks pretty impressive, but I hate boxing. It isn’t even my usual indifference to a sport; I genuinely dislike everything about boxing. Not really in the market for watching an anime that features the sport. Still, the opening of this first episode was pretty well done so I imagine some people will really enjoy it.

Thanks for reading.

    1. It has been interesting how we are starting to see more adult characters in romances. I quite like that trend and hopefully we continue to get some of these older characters in amongst all the high school ones.

  1. 3D Kanojo… It could be good, it could go very bad. From some of what we saw in the 1st ep I’m crossing my fingers and hoping for the latter.

  2. I really hate boxing too. Anything that involves people beating up each other (boxing, MMA) makes me uncomfortable, which is why I didn’t even bother watching the first episode of Magalobox.

    1. I will admit, it was definitely the best produced new show I tried last week and I think people into that sort of thing will probably be well rewarded for trying it. However, it isn’t for me and rather than explaining that for weeks on end, I’d rather drop it and let people who are going to enjoy the show cover it.
