Anime for the Season: Spring 2018 Week 3

spring2018 3

Not all anime will be updated this week as the anniversary posts took up a lot of time. Next week will catch up week 3, but unfortunately I won’t be able to watch new episodes during the week (travelling through no internet land) so I’ll be doing some double episode reviews once I have access to internet again.

What I watched

3D Kanojo: Real Girl (Episode 3)

Real3b

Actually, I enjoyed this third episode far more than the second episode and I’m still interested enough in these characters to want to keep watching. Certainly this anime has some very rough edges but there’s an odd kind of enjoyment from watching it.

Caligula (Episode 3 – Not reviewed)

I am probably going to drop this if next week delivers a similar episode. I honestly found myself bored while sitting through the tea party. While there are some intriguing ideas here, I don’t know that I’m really sold on how they are presenting this story so far.

Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card (Episode 15)

Cardcaptor15c

And we’re back to cute girls hanging out, but the nostalgia is strong with this episode and it ends with a cliff-hanger so who knows what we’ll get next week. Definite adorable moments here, particularly if you like watching Sakura get super embarrassed.

Cute High Earth Defense Club Happy Kiss (Episode 3)

Defense3d

This continues to be amusing enough even as it goes through its basic formula. I would kind of like the villains to occasionally not be totally ridiculous, but the anime is what it is and it either works for you or it doesn’t. Still, bread tab villain thing was particularly absurd.

Darling in the Franxx (Episode 15 – Reviewed for patrons)

Franxx15l

Teen drama resolved (at least by the end of the episode) and instead we get the super robot fight versus the random blue blooded creature things. It is a spectacle and it is certainly fun, but I really kind of feel the story here is up and down like a yo-yo.

Devils’ Line (Episode 3)

Devil3d

I don’t think the write up on this is going to change. If you like vampire guy making out with non-vampire girl (who is literally encountering every vampire in the city) and some blood related violence, you will probably have fun. If you want a meaningful story or visuals that actually look reasonable, look elsewhere.

Doreiku The Animation (Episode 2)

Doreiku2c

This one isn’t going to hold up to any kind of logical scrutiny but there’s kind of a fascination with where it might go that keeps me wanting more at the moment. Objectively not particularly good, this one is definitely keeping me interested in the basic concept and wanting to see what happens to these characters. I somehow suspect the reveals won’t be worth it, but I’m on board for now.

Full Metal Panic Invisible Victory (Episode 2)

FMP2a

Yep, definitely not newcomer friendly, this series is fantastic for fans of the old FMP (and it really is amazing), yet there’s no time for recap or filling in the blanks as this series really is just charging into the new conflict without a moment to catch your breath. Love it, but after such a long gap you would think they’d consider the wider audience a little more.

GeGeGe No Kitaro (Episode 4)

GeGeGe4a

Another fairly cute and entertaining episode with Mana’s neighbour getting into the GeGeGe forest and going on a tour with Kitaro before inevitably getting into some trouble with one of the locals. No real tension, just enjoyable and relaxing viewing.

Kakuriyo No Yadomeshi (Episode 4 – Reviewed for Patrons)

Kakuriyo4f

As a supernatural slice of life, this is kind of working. As for any kind of romance, not so much. It seems that is on hold and a long term project rather than a focal point. Still, the support cast are fun to get to know so there’s enough to enjoy here.

Libra of Nil Admirari (Episode 3 – Not reviewed)

This one seems like it might be okay. Just okay mind you. It isn’t doing anything particularly noteworthy but hasn’t made many missteps yet either. The introduction of different factions with different agendas for the books kind of seems like it could be interesting.

Lostorage Conflated WIXOSS (Episode 3)

Wixoss3c

Third episode doing well. Pieces being moved into place, and characters all confronting their various demons as they remember previous iterations of the Selector battles. It will be interesting to see what the end game is this time.

My Hero Academia Season 3 (Episode 3)

hero academia 3 six

Not as bad as I expected as Midoriya does try to reach out to Kota, the kids all get some training and finally the villains attack. While this hasn’t been an amazing start to the season, it seems like things are rolling along now and hopefully once this anime finds its momentum again it will be fantastic.

Record of Grancrest War (Episode 15)

Grancrest15c

And Theo is back on the mainland and it is almost as though nobody cares about the whole liberated his homeland thing. Side story over, we’re back to preparing to claim Castle Unicorn back from Milza. I wish I was making that up.

Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori (Episode 2)

Biyori2a

Not reviewed this week.

Space Battleship Tiramisu (Episode 3)

Tiramisu3a

Not reviewed this week.

Spiritpact: Bond of the Underworld (Episode 9)

Spiritpact9b

Another case of, I want to see what happens next. Even though this second season has been dominated by back story, it is story that has been well told and really made me care more about the characters while seeing them in a slightly different light. Wanting the next episode now.

Steins;Gate 0 (Episode 3)

Steins3a

Still not quite hitting the spot, but episode 3 certainly got closer to what I was wanting from this series and I really enjoyed the interactions between some of the characters this week. Hopefully this anime continues to find its feet and manages to take me for a very cool ride this season.

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online (Episode 3)

SAO3b

I probably won’t be doing episode reviews of this one any more. I’m going to swap it with Caligula. That said, I’m going to watch another episode or 2 and see how it goes. To be honest though, mostly I’ve just been bored with these first three episodes.

Tada Doesn’t Fall in Love (Episode 3)

Tada3b

For a third episode, I was pretty happy with this. It seemed to highlight the strengths of the anime and bring the characters together nicely. While not amazing, it remains a pleasant viewing experience.

Tokyo Ghoul: Re (Episode 3)

Ghoul3c

Not reviewed this week.

Episode of the Week

FMP2c
These two are back in action and Full Metal Panic Invisible Victory episode 2 hit all the right notes. I’m sold on this series and this episode was fantastic (not the visuals, but that’s another story).

Character of the Week

Tada3a
Nyanko-Big as the selfish cat narrator for the episode really stole the show right out from underneath Tada in Tada Never Falls in Love.

Dropped

  • Butlers X Battlers (Episode 1)
  • Comic Girls (Episode 1)
  • Crossing Time (Episode 1)
  • Dances with the Dragons (Episode 2)
  • Golden Kamuy (Episode 1)
  • Gurazeni: Money Pitch (Episode 1)
  • Hinamatsuri (Episode 1)
  • Love To Lie Angle (Episode 1)
  • Magical Girl Ore (Episode 1)
  • Magical Girl Site (Episode 2)
  • MEGALOBOX (Episode 1)
  • My Sweet Tyrant (Episode 1)
  • You Don’t Know Gunma Yet (Episode 1)

Thanks for reading.

  1. Whoa. Steins Gate 0 is already out and I’m missing a few episodes already?! And SAO alternative something something? Since when? Lol. I’m aware of TG3 and BnK3 but purposely waiting it to finish airing all episodes. Anyway this is nice haha.

    1. I’m still planning on dropping something here. I just haven’t figured out what. Too many shows are taking too long to get through their set up. I’m thinking the SAO Alternative is going to go after the next episode though. I’m really not enjoying it.
