30 Day Anime Challenge: Day 4

30-day-anime-challenge

It’s Day 4 on the challenge and I’m really struggling with this one. Most Overrated Anime. Mostly I don’t like using the phrase overrated because I fully belive that everyone is entitled to their opinion and if a lot of people like something, they like it for a reason. Even if it doesn’t do much for me.

But, I am going to answer this challenge because I made an agreement with myself that I would answer the questions even if I ended up giving multiple answers. That said, I’m going to slightly reinterpret the question here and make it my most overrated anime. An anime I love, that I recommend to others, that I thoroughly enjoy, but I know it really isn’t very good from any kind of objective view point.

My most overrated anime would have to be Bleach.

title1

The story is stretched out too far, the cast expands to ridiculous levels, pretty much everyone is protected by plot armour and by the end of the third season you pretty much know the writer is not going to commit to actually doing any irreversible damage to anyone or anything of consequence. Random power ups happen because they do, characters don’t use their powers when they’d probably solve the problem, everyone talks to much during fights and fights go on too long.

Pretty much any criticism you could throw at an anime could be thrown at Bleach and it is hard to actually argue against most of those criticisms. That doesn’t stop it being awesome to watch but given how highly I might rank it on a list of favourite anime I’d have to admit that for what it actually does I’ve probably overrated it.

Your thoughts on most overrated anime?

  1. For as popular as it started out, viewers seemed to be blase about Bleach by the end.

Although I haven’t seen it, SAO seems incredibly overhyped to me. If it’s fine, great, but people were acting like the story had never been done before.

  2. I had to think about this one for a bit, but then it came to me: currently that is Stein’s Gate. I really had expected this one to be incredible seeing all the praise it has received, but I was really disappointed by it. Still…I promised Weekend Otaku that I am going to give this one a second try, so I will do that somewhere in October, to see if I might just have misjudged this one šŸ˜Š

    1. Stines;Gate is a tricky one. I really love it but I on a second viewing I could see how some parts of the first half really dragged.

      1. The funny thing is, I promised Weekend Otaku, I would give it a second chance, so I am going to rewatch it in October. Don’t know if I will change my mind after that viewing though, especially not after reading this comment lol šŸ˜‚

        1. I found Steins’Gate better in English dub (which is odd for me) but that was because the conversation is really quite fast in the show and characters often talk over other characters. The subs were actually filling quite a lot of the bottom half of the screen and were hard to keep up with, plus the jokes didn’t hit so well. In English, it was all just more fun to watch and I found it easier to get into.

          1. Okay..Well, I pretty much always watch a series in the original Japanese version, but after reading this, I might make a exception now for this one. Thanks for the advice šŸ˜€

  3. Mine is easily Sword Art Online. After seeing so many people praise it, it disappointed so much. The characters were flat, the romance between Kirito and Asuna has no substance, and the the pacing was awful.

Of course I’m also the person who thinks Fairy Dance is a better arc than Aincrad.

    1. See Fairy Dance is my least favourite of the SAO arcs. I find the villain’s motives completely rubbish and his methods really haphazard so it is impossible to take him seriously.

      1. Yup it does xDD. Depends on how you feel about it though. My main gripe is that it sells itself as a traditional MMO anime, fails on that. And you have the defenders saying it isn’t a traditional MMO.

    1. It’s one of those anime you should just watch for fun, and it is great fun. What it isn’t is something that can be taken overly seriously.

  4. Bleach is great but I can see what you mean! I also share your opinion on the term “over-rated”. If a vast majority of people like something then to them it wouldn’t be over-rated, so I like the spin you put on this challenge šŸ˜€

    1. I think that has been the hardest thing with the challenge is figuring out how to define some of the categories before I answer them.

I'd love to know what you think.
