Day 3: Most Underrated Anime.

I somehow don’t think any of my choices are going to stand up here but I’ve got a few anime that I think should get a bit more attention. For a romance I’d have to go with one I recently suggested to Kapodaco for their Summer of Anime and that is Natsuyuki Rendezvous. This also came up in Kurumi Shim’s recent list of romance anime that don’t get recommended very often by fans.

It’s an anime that is incredibly sweet but has its bitter moments. The characters are really great but they are all ordinary people (even the ghost is just kind of a guy who died rather than anything particularly different). I think its the blend of the very ordinary with the minor bits of the supernatural and just the handling of the characters’ emotions that end up really selling the show. Basically, it is great to watch but doesn’t get a lot of attention.

For something  a bit darker that gets overlooked a lot I’d got with Bokurano. It is completely unsettling and while the series has plenty of issues, it is pretty compelling viewing once you get into it and it will definition unsettle you. This one made my top 5 recommendations for Halloween last year and I totally stand by that.

Okay, which anime do you feel are underrated?

  1. I also agree with Bokurano being dealt underrated. I’ve never met anyone in real life that’s heard of it (minus people I’ve recommended it to). When it got a DVD release I jumped at the chance to own it and it’s one of my favorite purchases.

    1. Oh, I totally know the feeling. I heard about it from Arkada and knew I’d love it but had no way to watch before the DVD release. Great purchase. Nobody I know IRL has watched it either. Real shame.

    2. I don’t think I’ve met many people who have heard of it but that’s fairly true of most anime outside of Attack on Titan and other obvious titles. Still, it is quite a good story for what it is and it really is worth the watch.

  2. Yes!! This was such a surprise for me when I watched a couple years ago. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t much. I cried, I got so invested in the characters, and overall I just really liked this show! 😃 I totally agree, this show is definitely underrated.

  3. Yes, Bokurano is such an underrated series! Good on you for mentioning it! That series has such a good story and it knows how to use dark elements.

As far as stuff I consider to be underrated, I’d say the following in no particular order:

    Texhnolyze
    Kurogane Communication
    Shinesman
    Shamanic Princess
    Yugo the Negotiator
    Patapata Hikousen no Bouken
    Angel’s Egg

    1. Oh, shows I haven’t heard of are on your list. That’s pretty rare! Will check them out 🙂

Texhnolyze is a bit hard to get into but there is a great show there if you can manage.

  4. Because of you I watched Bokurano, and I could not agree with you more. It really was very unsettling, creepy even, but so incredibly good. Definitely an underrated gem 😊 Looking through my own list of anime, I would say Rideback is really an overlooked anime series. It had a very cool concept, and turned into a series that I honestly did not expect to find after having read the synopsis for it. I did a review for it on my blog a few months ago, and I highly recommend it 😀

  5. Natsuyuki Rendezvous is my second favorite anime of all time along with Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu! I HIGHLY suggest watching that one as well! You won’t be disappointed <3
