30 Day Anime Challenge: Day 2

Day 2 and they are already hitting the hard to answer questions. An anime I’m ashamed I enjoyed? Generally speaking I don’t feel ashamed about anything I watch but I guess there are probably two anime that I’ve kind of flinched when someone has come in and I’ve been watching them. This is different from the anime just happening to be on the one bathroom sequence in the whole series and someone walks in because that’s just to be expected at this point.

The first would be Junjou Romantica. I actually really love that anime and it is probably the reason I originally looked into AnimeLab because Crunchyroll doesn’t play this in Australia but AnimeLab had the third season. Really glad about that anyway because AnimeLab has since aired lots of shows that either weren’t on Crunchyroll in Australia, Crunchyroll didn’t get them, or they are on Crunchyroll but it turns out AnimeLab streams better for me. That doesn’t change the fact that the first episode of Junjou Romantica really should have been enough for me to hit the stop button and walk away. It is confronting and if someone told me that the two characters met this way and then ended up in a relationship as the salepitch for a show I’d probably not even consider watching. Why I watched beyond episode 1 I don’t remember but I do know I’m kind of hooked on the show now but it is one I’ve never even tried to suggest to someone in real life that they should watch.

The other anime that I’ve probably hidden away in my collection and don’t really mention is Tenchi Muyo: War On Geminar. I actually had no idea what I was getting into when I started this but given the first episode doesn’t really hide its obsession with putting girls in ridiculous outfits and over-sexualising everything I can’t say I didn’t know what I was getting into. Despite that, and the really boring protagonist, and the story that kind of doesn’t make sense, and everything else that is wrong with the show, I still really enjoyed watching it. There are so many moments where you just want to cover your face and ask why and yet the show is fun.

At some point I’ll have to review both of these series but so far I’ve kind of avoided that. I get the feeling when I review them the negative points will seem to outweigh the positive (and that’s probably very true from any objective point of view). However, I really did enjoy both series even if I still won’t watch them with anyone. And just so we’re clear, it isn’t that both of these anime have sex as a focus. It is more the way the relationships are portrayed and some really uncomfortable, line crossing moments that both series have that make them ones that are a bit harder to talk about.

Over to you and which anime are you ashamed you enjoyed?

  1. Oh gosh, I feel you a bit with Junjou Romantica! It’s not usually my cup of tea, but its focus on the romance aspect and the background stories behind everyone made it worm its way into my watch list. That said I haven’t watched all the episodes yet, I’m sure I’ll get there one day!

    1. Once it gets started (and past that fairly dreadful first episode) the romance is actually kind of nice (if totally unbalanced). I like the other characters more than the main couple, at least in the first season, but by the second season even the main couple had kind of grown on me and the moments of ‘what am I watching’ had faded to only one or two every couple of episodes.

  2. I haven’t seen either of the anime you mentioned here and uh, probably never will? Doesn’t really sound appealing, sorry.

As for me, I can’t really say which anime I’m ashamed of watching. Would hentai could? But even then, it’s less that I’m ashamed about enjoying it and more that I’ll jump of a cliff if anyone finds the episodes on my tablet.

    1. I agree. I’m not actually ashamed I enjoy what I enjoy but at the same seeing me watch it would probably lead to even more annoying explanations than bathroom sequences usually do and to be honest I can do without having to defend anime for awhile.

  3. I’ve always found it hard to be ashamed of the things I watch. Instead I feel more embarrassed when someone walks in and sees a weird scene.
But I do get the feeling of enjoying a show that’s really not good. A recent example for me is Occultic;Nine. It has the absolute worst first episode I’ve ever seen and yet I continued it and had a blast watching things unfold. I know when I eventually review it I’m going to have to break down all that’s wrong with it while still managing to show how I enjoyed it at the same time.

  4. The Tenchi franchise is essentially the same scenario over and over again. LOL I never got why all these women wanted him aside from his connection to the Jiraian family. Though this is something that takes a while before its revealed. But yeah, I feel like I know War On Geminar without actually seeing it. the last Tenchi series I watched was GXP and he wasn’t even in it.

Btw these questions are alot harder than the ones I had when I took on the challenge. So Good luck

  5. Those are some interesting choices.

Mine would be Divine Gate. It was generic, nonsensical and a complete disaster but I wound up enjoying it quite a bit for the aesthetic and semi-interesting concepts behind it.

More recently, I’m currently watching Date A Live, which I’m enjoying immensely, but it feels so trashy.

Best of luck with the rest of the challenges.

I need to finish this myself. It’s been 3 months since I last did one of these haha.

    1. I should have included Date A Live on this list actually. While I enjoyed the first season (still not sure why but I did), I remember when someone walked into the room where I was watching I killed the monitor almost involuntarily.

  6. I have no idea that I’m ashamed of watching…like you. When I did this challenge, I said I’m not ashamed that I watched hentai anime. Mostly because I’m a curious cat. There are series I enjoyed but when the themes are questionable like rape, of course I won’t enjoy them. But yeah. I like Junjou Romantica, as well. It has its own problems like other yaoi series, but at least it really focuses on the romantic relationships. Good post. Good luck on completing the rest of the challenges. Cheers!

  7. Had to think about your question for a bit, but I guess the only anime that springs to mind for me is Blood-C. It was bad, but I enjoyed it at the same time to be honest. I even hope there will be a follow up to it if you can believe that lol 😂
