Day 18 and it is my favourite animal sidekick, pet or summoning. I’m glad that all the options are available because otherwise this would be hard. Still, I’m going with the obvious choice and that is Nyanko Sensei from Natsume Yuujinchou.
I’m sorry, he’s adorable in cat form, sarcastic at times and injects some much needed cattiness into the otherwise sweet show, a powerful ally, and just a great character. He gets some of the best moments but also knows when to fade into the background (or just go and drink sake at narratively convenient moments).
One of my favourite souvenirs that I picked up when I went to Japan was a Nyanko Sensei phone strap so his sly gaze is watching me all the time from my phone and I often wonder just what he is up to. Forget favourite sidekick, pet or summoning, Nyanko is just a great character who happens to mostly look like a fat cat.

I picked Panther Lily from Fairy Tale. It was a rushed choice, perhaps, but, seriously, he’s pretty strong and smart, and so much less obnoxious than Happy.
Animal sidekick? I’d say Japolo from Shamanic Princess. He’s a ferret familiar who works with the main character Tiara. Japolo is a high strung critter who cares for Tiara, but is also willing to call her out on her brash attitude and selfishness. Not to mention he can be quite funny. By the way, he was a ferret side kick years before Lyrical Nanoha ever existed. Just sayin’. Hahaha!
My number 2 choice would be Dan’l from Kimba the White Lion. He’s this wise, yet very eccentric baboon who’s the advisor to the main character’s kingdom. Dan’l becomes a bit of a father figure to Kimba after his parents were killed, so that dynamic was interesting.
Had to think about this one for a bit, as I don’t know many animal sidekicks in the animeseries that I have watched to date. But I guess I am going for Taromaru from School Live. He plays a pretty big role in the series, and also a pretty important one 😊

Kero-chan from Cardcaptor Sakura will forever be my number sidekick, then Nigou from Kuroko’s Basket, that little dog is so adorable
