Day 13 and favourite single episode of an anime…
This is really kind of hard because most anime aren’t really episodic so individual episodes don’t tend to stand out because they don’t make sense without the context of the rest of the show.
Still, there are two individual episodes that do stand out.
The first was that episode from Assassination Classroom season 2.
(Don’t look if you don’t want spoilers.)
Yep, season 2 episode 24: Graduation Time.
I was a complete mess after watching this episode. It is so incredibly slow and drawn out and it does everything possible to wring every single emotion out of the situation. Usually I’d call such an overt effort to make me cry contrived but it was so incredibly effective I really don’t think it is a valid criticism at that point.
If you actually click the link to my review of the episode you can see I was deeply moved by that episode and that feeling certainly stuck. I still get a bit teary thinking about it.
The other more recent episode that hit me hard came from My Hero Academia. Season 2 Episode 9, or episode 22 depending on how you are counting episodes. I’m apparently not alone in having a huge response to this episode and there were definitely some truly amazing blog posts written about it in the week following its release. Uraraka fights Bakugo and what could have been a quick and dirty fight turned into something that truly amazed pretty much everyone.
Seriously awesome episode that will leave you totally in love with these two characters and sets up the next episode beautifully.
I am aware these are both pretty recent but I honestly seldom remember individual episodes of older series. Generally after the first watch I tend to watch things in bulk so I remember the story and the sequence of events rather than how many episodes in I am. Still, these two episodes were fantastic.
What are your thoughts on favourite episode from an anime?

Couldn’t agree with you more on the selection of that episode from Assassination Classroom. Seriously, the individual roll call was just too touching.
I forgot what I wrote in my challenge, but now that I think about it, I absolutely fell in love with the 9th Episode of Death Note, Encounter. Not only because it has my favorite dialogue (When L says to light, “I wanted to tell you that I am L”) but also because their individual intro to the rest of the students of that college was awesome. Not to mention the fact that Light suffered his first mental breakdown in that episode. Damn, Now I want to watch it again.
Hohou. I think this is rather easy for me. Although there are many, many great episodes, I would say my favourite one is definitely the 23rd of Steins;Gate “Open the Steins;Gate”. It might be because at the time I first watched I was quite a newbie, but darn it if it was amazing. I think it was the first time I ever cried not for sadness or depression, but for mere joy. Hm, “joy” isn’t the right word for that feeling though, a mix of happiness, excitement, pure madness? Not sure. Whelp. It’s not one of my favourite Anime for nothing.
I’m getting the after effects of being a Manga reader here. Although I also thought those episodes where great, the impact was definitely weaker for me. Wait, perhaps the exact fact that I still thought of them great… while *knowing* exactly (well, maybe not that exactly) what would happen is showing how amazing they were already? I actually think so.
I love the Bakugou vs. Uraraka fight. Even if the result seems obvious from the start, Horikoshi-sensei managed to make it interesting. And I just love how Bakugou acknowledged her. (This is also the reason why I’m so heartbroken shipping them together.)
Whenever I think of single episodes, I think of stand-alone ones and there’s two that immediately pops into my mind — episode 25 of Daa! Daa! Daa! and episode 304 of Detective Conan. 😀
Wow one episode?
That’s hard….
I agree with the assassination classroom and I havent watched My hero academia yet so I skipped reading that part of it…
If I had to choose, maybe…. no nevermind, I’m not trying…
This one is a real tough one to answer, nothing currently springs to mind if I am being quite honest. I might try and do this challenge at some point as well. Maybe something will come up at that point 😊
Nope not even gonna try to answer this one. See you in the next post. >.<
Last episode of Grisaia no Rakuen.
Pure badassery – no words.
I agree that favorite singular episode of anime is a tough one. My picks would probably be the final episode of Angel Beats, for the beautiful dialogue and friendship between the characters, culminating in the heart-wrenching plot twist the show tosses in there right at the end, OR episode 5 of Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash. Because i’ve never seen an anime that better portrays the loss of a loved friend and comrade.
Thanks for this series, Karandi. It’s been making me think hard about some random stuffs. Maybe i’ll give it a go sometime, see how i do.
Episode 5 of Grimgar was pretty amazing in what it did. Good call.
I too really enjoyed the Uraraka vs. Bakugo fight. It was a victory despite being a loss. She gave it her all in her own heroic way, and won favour with the crowd through her efforts.
Bakugo was presented as a villain, and I hope he doesn’t end up becoming one, but instead learns to use this adversity to become a better hero.
Also, I feel tempted to do my own version of this anime challenge. But not sure how I’d go about tackling this particular challenge. Picking a favourite episode is especially difficult, considering how you have to choose from thousands of episodes, hundreds of which could easily be contenders for great episodes in their own right. I can’t fault you for picking two lol.
Yes, I am definitely cheating a lot in this challenge.
