Maou-Sama, Retry! Review Episode 1

Every-day in Every-way

Once again, anime characters should not review their own anime.

Demon-Lord, Retry Episode 1

On the bright side, for a light novel adaptation this one actually has a short title. On the other hand, this is pretty uncreative stuff and not even delivered in a particularly interesting manner. Once again I ask the question of why even bother showing us his everyday life for the few seconds they bother before he enters the game or fantasy world? It adds nothing and if he had just started by appearing in the world we’d have got more or less the same information in the end from how he reacted to being there.

The fact that the main character seems aware that his plot line is derivative doesn’t help the situation and the throw away joke at the end about erasing his hard drive was pretty lame in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime and lands even flatter here.

However, while this one isn’t doing anything that is making me jump for joy it is also fairly watchable and undemanding. It isn’t all that fun yet but there is certainly the potential for fun, particularly if the main character embraces his role of Demon Lord. I will admit I didn’t expect him to actually set fire to the village and I think it is going to be an interesting line for him to try to walk as he navigates this world.

Tempting, but no.

All things considered though, this one is nothing special and we can probably find a similar if not better title in every season of anime for the last couple of years. Whether that’s where this remains or whether it now goes about building on this generic beginning and finding its own feet remains to be seen.

Thanks for reading

  1. I know it’s early days but I don’t have much confidence that this season will produce many entries in my year end Top 10, especially as so many have the “whisked away to another world/virtual reality/PC game” premise, hence my watch list being so thin this season. :-/

    1. I’ve actually got a pretty full watch list already and while there’s a lot of whisked to another world type stories some of them seem kind of interesting. This one however is probably the bottom of the barrel and depending on how many more shows I pick up this one is probably one I’m looking to drop.
