The Promised Neverland Episode 12 Review

As a final episode it is more or less impossible to avoid spoilers, and to be honest, I’m not really going to try so if you haven’t watched the final episode of The Promised Neverland yet, go and watch it. It’s brilliant. There you go, reviewed.

The Promised Neverland Episode 12 - Norman

Of course, it is left wide and completely open for a sequel but it did something that I appreciate in books with multiple volumes as well. That is, it resolved the most immediate dilemma even if other issues still need to be addressed and other conflicts are yet to be resolved. In this case, episode 12 gives us the escape from Plant Three with Emma, Ray, Gilda, Don, and all the kids, over four years old.

The Promised Neverland Episode 12 - Climbing the wall

Yes, that is right. Emma made the heart-breaking decision to leave the kids behind. Prompted by Ray, doubts by Norman, Gilda’s fears, and her own uncertainty about the ability to succeed, Emma rationalised the situation and decided that given they don’t harvest kids until they are six, she has two years to figure out how to come back and save them. It might be a pipe dream and one that could not be fulfilled (given she couldn’t even guarantee living through the first night) but it was enough to allow her to leave them behind and act without being paralysed by grief.

The Promised Neverland Episode 12 - Emma and Phil

This episode brings all the planning together and shows the twists and turns. It has Ray coming to terms with the fact that Norman utterly outplayed him and being happy enough to be wrong. It has Phil’s role given meaning even if he is still a bit of a wild-card. And mostly, it has Emma. A fiery and determined leader who takes on the advice and guidance of those around her to make the best decisions she can and guide the others.

It didn’t all go beautifully smoothly, but neither did they throw too many things in their path. One can only assume that more dangers are coming their way but this episode ended on a triumphant note and it is a wonderful place to leave this series for now. Hopefully it isn’t goodbye forever but even if it were, there’s enough resolved here to feel content and not like the story just got chopped off at the knees.

The Promised Neverland Episode 12 - Morning

All I can say is, wow.

  1. I just finished this series last night due to reading about it in your blog posts- and it was much better than I imagined! I loved seeing the whole plan come together- although even at the end when the sun rose I was sure something bad was going to happen haha!

I feel like they could have ended this with just one series, but I am interested to see if a season 2 will be at the same quality when it comes out 🙂

  2. I freaking love this show. It covers all elements that are required to keep an audience on edge. I just finished reading the manga the night before, and it is absolutely a masterpiece! The creativity of the plot, the diversity of characters, and the numerous number of thrills make this work open to anyone regardless of age. Can’t wait for season 2!

    1. Though I think at this point most people have watched it. It was one of those anime that just needed to be watched without spoilers so a lot of people were watching this one the day it came out.

  3. “It’s brilliant. There you go, reviewed.”

I have to admire your economy of words! With this episode, it’s either that or a novel-length post.

The writers for this show did a superb job. So did the artists. And voice actors. And I shouldn’t forget the musicians. Heck, I’m guessing the janitorial staff was top notch, too!

    1. Yes, I’ll start working on the full review which is likely to get a little wordy but I found with episode 12 it was either full spoiler or really superficial. Ultimately I’m not happy with this episode review but I didn’t want to get in to too many details because I want people to have the fun of watching it.

  4. I agree that it was enough of an ending to feel the closure on the main arc and still left plenty of room to grow into more seasons. I really enjoyed this series and can’t wait for more. Oh look… manga…

    1. I’m not sure I want to spoil watching the show though. I’ve read the first volume of the manga and I have the second, but I think I’d prefer to wait for the next season of the anime to find out what happens next.

      1. That’s fair. I don’t think I can wait that long though. I’ve read 3 volumes which takes you up to the end of episode 8. I managed to hold out for four seasons of Game of Thrones before giving in and reading them all (so far anyhow). I’m glad that it looks like they plan on doing a couple more seasons.

        1. I still tend to prefer either reading a novel or watching a TV show/anime over reading manga. Natsume Yuujinchou is a bit of an exception where the manga has absolutely captivated me. So if I have the option of waiting for another season, I’ll take it. I think I’d only decide to read ahead in the manga if there was extreme doubt of ever getting another season.

  5. Even four year-olds are extremely inventive in this show too! And the demons want to eat them? Why not have them build nuclear weapons that fit inside a pencil or something just as ingenious instead? 😛

Bittersweet editing to this season in that the main story was (pretty much) concluded but now we have to wait for the next season! >.<

  6. (Okay…this is totally off topic 😅😅) Hi….I am back…well…kind of back😅😅 I’m seriously out of touch with anime, and with a new season of anime around the corner, I hopefully will be able to see some shows again. It all depends on how things go healthwise….but we’ll see😅 I have absolutely no idea what’s coming up this season (besides of course Attack on Titan)…so….is there anything that’s coming up, that you think will be worth checking out? 🤔🤔

    1. Oh wow, you’re back.🤩
I did a post on Tuesday of anime I was kind of looking forward to in the new season: https://100wordanime.blog/2019/03/26/top-5-anime-im-anticipating-for-the-spring-season/
That said, I haven’t really looked because I’m a week out from going overseas so I was more just going to catch up on stuff when I could for next season. It’s going to be a little haphazard.
And, you’re back. How have you been?

      1. Well…kind of back…lol😅😅I just published my first post in ages where I pretty much explain everything: https://raistlin0903.wordpress.com/2019/03/29/breaking-the-silence/ The short version: not really good, but eh I miss being here.
It’s nice to talk again though😊 I’m about to head off to work for an evening shift: so I will check out that post either tonight when I get back. or tomorrow…but cool to hear you are going overseas. For work? Or something else? 😊

        1. I just finished reading your post. Sorry to hear things still aren’t going great.
I’m getting to go overseas because someone fairly close to me has been working in Japan for the last few months and I’m pretty much crashing for the last few weeks that they are there. It wasn’t exactly in my plan for the year but I don’t know many people who would turn down an opportunity to go to Japan.

          1. Wow! Seriously you are heading to Japan?! That is totally awesome!😊 Of course I am a little jealous now lol. Seriously though, that is amazing! It’s definitely something that is still on my to do list some day. I hope you will have a great time, but I’m pretty sure you will 😊

          2. Assuming I have okay internet I’m hoping to keep the blog up and going while I’m there and post photos and updates. If it suddenly goes quiet though, it just means I haven’t got internet access for a bit.

          3. Understandable. Don’t worry about your blog, it won’t be going anywhere, and you know we will all stick around. Most important thing: have fun! But I’m pretty much convinced that you will 😊😊
