That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 3: Submissive Wolves and Buff Goblins

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Episode 3 - Goblin

You know, if I’d seen this a long time ago I’d probably be totally in love with it. But as it is, I just can’t help but feeling like just making the main character a little bluer and bouncier than the standard isekai protagonist isn’t quite enough of a distinguishing point. From a plot point of view it still feels like we’re very much in an introductory phase as our protagonist still knows very little about the world, something which isn’t aided by the fact that he doesn’t ask sensible questions. When asked if he was sure he should be giving everyone a name all at once he simply said he didn’t see a problem. Why wouldn’t you ask why the other guy was concerned? It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

None of that is saying this show isn’t fun enough. My issue is it is very middle of the road. Some of the humour sticks and some of the action is kind of cool, okay the swift end to the leader of the dire wolves was very cool, but there’s a lot of very forgettable scenes as well and at the end of three episodes if I had to sum up this story it would be ‘bouncy blue slime thing eats stuff and makes friends with monsters’ which admittedly doesn’t sound too bad but also isn’t making me desperate to see what happen next.

Partially this is because there’s still no real indication that the story is going anywhere and while it is fine to focus on character exploration rather than having some urgent mission from the get go, I’d probably need to care more about the character for that kind of thing to work. As it is, I’m not overly concerned about Rimuru and now that the goblins and dire-wolves are teamed up, evolved and commanded to play nice with other species, I’m not overly concerned for their well-being either.

So while yes this will be pleasant enough viewing, unless the story takes a sudden turn after we get through the introductions I’m really not thinking that this one is going to end up in my top picks for the season. It is watchable, it isn’t doing anything overly wrong, last season I’d have been thrilled to watch it given how little there was on my watch list, but this season it is getting overshadowed quite a bit by other shows I’m more interested in.

    1. I think this sort of opening might work better as a binge than a weekly view. As you said, it isn’t in a hurry, but for those who don’t know the source or where it is going, it means there hasn’t been all that much of a hook so far. That won’t matter if it goes somewhere interesting, but right now while it has been enjoyable enough, it isn’t really grabbing me.

      1. I can understand that, and yeah I agree that binge watching alot of these starter episodes probably makes it easier, but taking it slow like this will probably help things out in the long run.

Then again, the bar for Isekai is so low.

  1. I was on the cusp of dropping this halfway through episode 2 then the humans arrived followed by the goblins so I stuck with it. Not watched this episode yet so we’ll see if it can win me over some more.

I think it depends on the person. Someone like me will probably go like: “Yeah, why not”? But i’m not really expecting a serious answer. Rimura mirrors the same attitude it is just dialogue wasn’t in his favor. I don’t necessarily see this as any sort of deficiency but just how the character works. Not even like i’m defending his character.

I also disagree that this show hasn’t done anything overtly wrong. I think from the first episode it has not concerned itself with writing or structure. And it just does things for the sake of doing them.

    1. It kind of feels to me like they are still setting up pieces for later use. Now that could be wrong and maybe everything has just been random meandering in which case once it is done I’ll probably never think about this show again. However, as set up with potential to go somewhere, it hasn’t made any serious missteps. It may not be the most exciting or enticing show I’ve started this season but other than being a little flat I don’t have much in the way of complaint about it.
As to Rimura not asking why, that’s a pet hate I have of protagonists. I know some people won’t mind it, but for me it is annoying when they don’t ask what seems like the obvious question.

      1. I mean I don’t think the question is very obvious. “Yeah, Is there some consequence to giving you guys names”?

Again, I’d probably ask it rhetorically but I don’t necessarily blame him for that. I think its made very serious missteps. The functionality of the “Predator” skill has been used in various manners that would contradict itself (i.e. absorbing Veldora but being unable to spit it out; can absorb wounded goblins but can spit them out). Many more stuff like that happens.

  3. Being overshadowed is very right…. I was kind of excited to watch after 1 episode. But this thing is going too slow. As an Isekai fan I am a bit disappointed because series like this always go very slow with almost negligible story and only for 1 season….

    1. As I said, it isn’t really doing anything bad, it just hasn’t grabbed me as much as I thought it would. For every great moment there’s a lot of ho-hum while I wait for the next one. Still, there are plenty of worse shows out there and I certainly watched plenty of worse shows last season.

          1. I haven’t read the light novel and I didn’t finish the first season of the anime. I didn’t dislike it, I just kind of stopped and never really felt compelled to go back.
