Attack on Titan Season 3 Episode 12: And Now We Wait Until Next Year

Attack on Titan Season Three Episode 12 - Erwin and Levi

Well, once I found out this season was going to be split in two, any hope for an actual resolution of any sort this time around when out the window so I guess I’m not actually disappointed. And despite last week being a bit of a snooze fest and this week just plunging us into a cliff-hanger with a during end-credits tease, season three has still become my favourite Attack on Titan season yet, though I’ll get more into that when I do a whole season (half-season?) review.

Attack on Titan Season 3 Episode 12 - Hange

This week we get the higher ups talking some more and recapping things for us so that we know where we’re going next and why. Other than the over use of brown in this scene it works well enough and at least we’re clearly set on a course of action for now. That’s probably the best thing they did. Even with the gap between now and April next year when part 2 is supposed to come out, this episode gives us a clear direction which is something the end of season one and two lacked.

Attack on Titan Season Three Episode 12 - Eerwin

We get an interesting scene between Erwin and Levi that might have more significance and people who have read the manga probably know what that is but for me I’ll just file that under interesting and wait until the show chooses to maybe get back to it.

Attack on Titan Season 3 Episode 12 - Sasha

However, it was the second part of the episode that really got things going as we saw Sasha at her food craziest yet before Jean and Eren get into a ridiculous fight. It was kind of nice to see a little life in Eren even if he very nearly reverted into shouting idiot Eren. I think they played this nicely with him trying to have a bit of energy but inside he’s still kind of broken. Plus, we then got a Mikasa, Armin and Eren moment that was kind of adorable and brought us back to where these three started (as the OP has been all season) and it was just kind of nice to see this again even if it felt like tragic death flags were being raised all around (or maybe that’s just me because I’m used to this show doing that to us).

Attack on Titan Season 3 Episode 12 - Jean and Eren

So yes, this episode works and as a mid-season point it is pretty solid. As the last episode we’re going to see this year I just have to shake my head and remind myself it is Attack on Titan. This isn’t the worst thing they’ve ever done to viewers.

  1. I learned on reddit before watching the last episode that the season would be split. It’s unfortunate, but this season really upped the quality of the show.

I also totally couldn’t wait 6 months, so after watching episode 12 I binge-read the manga from that point up to its current chapter. I regret nothing lol.

    1. I really did enjoy this season of Attack on Titan (at least much more than season two or the second half of season one). Looking forward to seeing the next part when it comes out and hoping to continue avoiding spoilers until then because shock is one of the few things this anime does have going for it consistently.

  2. I didn’t get the memo that this would be split in half so imagine my surprise when I went to log this episode on MAL and it asked if I wanted to set it as “complete”. Jaw hit floor. 😮

    1. I missed that memo too though fortunately a comment Raistlin made before I watched the episode kind of made me go look on MAL and there it was plus a link to where they’ve already got part two set up and ready to go next year. And just when I was finally ready to admit I really liked Attack on Titan again after spending most of this season still trying to hold out.

  3. Really? The last episode was a snooze fest for you? I really enjoyed it as a character piece for a series that isn’t really known for doing that. And most of it has to do with the fact that this season’s content had more room for Masahi Koizuka to explore (and less moments for Araki to mess around with the character bits). Heck, In this episode alone, I kinda started to feel a little bit for Eren. The brat is finally getting it. Mikasa needs work because she’s still playing the kuudere card to a tee, but yeah… one more year. Agree that this is the best season so far for the show. Here’s hoping they can keep the pace going come season four.

    1. Last week gave us plenty of information that may later become relevant, but as an episode, and watching week to week, it was a low point. In a binge watch it would be one of those critical character moments and reveals that would link to something in following episodes but here its going to be at least six months before anything comes of it so as a stand alone episode it didn’t do much for me.

  4. It was an okay episode for me to be honest. As a kind if mid season finale it worked well enough (just what the heck was that final scene during the credits) and like you I enjoyed the moment between Mikasa, Eren and Armin. Overall though it was again a bit of a slow episode. Intersting..but slow. Anyways kind of annoyed that we again have to wait 6 months for this to continue 😢

    1. I didn’t realise they’d split the season but I guess now I’m going to wait for the second part of this because despite fearing I’d drop it early during season three, this season really did get me back on board with the story and characters.
