Tuesday’s Top 5: Anime Characters Who Smoke

This post is a little earlier in the day than normal and that’s because in about 7 hours (give or take) Raistlin and I are going to reveal our super secret project we’ve been teasing about on Twitter. Be sure to check back later for the post.

There’s a definite distance created when watching anime. In real life I cannot stand the smell of smoke or cigarettes and yet there are some anime characters out there that just look perfectly right when they light up their smoke, pipe, or whatever else. So today I am counting down my favourite 5 characters who are smokers and I invite the readers as always to give a shout out to your favourite characters as well.

Please note, there will be spoilers below.

Honourable mentions: Jean Havoc (Full Metal Alchemist) and Toshio Ozaki (Shiki).

Number 5: Shinya Kougami (Psycho Pass)

It seems kind of odd for Kougami to only come in at number 5 and yet that is definitely the case. Mostly because his smoking always seemed like a crutch to show he’d become broken down after everything and it never really fit with his excessive exercise and drive to find the culprit. That said, like with most things Kogami did, he looked very good while doing it.

Number 4: Worick (Gangsta)

Unlike Kogami, smoking really does fit with Worick’s character and lifestyle. It would actually be harder to imagine him not being a smoker. In the gritty world of Gangsta the cigarettes are pretty tame compared to the many other entertainments that could be found.

Number 3: Mikoto Suoh (K)

At least Mikoto will never have to worry about finding a light. The Red King again manages to make the cigarettes seem an extension of his character rather than something that is tacked on. It fits with his image and firey nature. It also makes a nice moment toward the end when he shares a smoke with the Blue King.

Number 2: Franken Stein (Soul Eater)

Could anyone else imagine this crazy character without his smokes? There’s something very careless about Stein and his overall appearance and temperament seem to lend themselves to living in the now. Though I have to wonder if smoking while dissecting a rare creature is particularly good practice.

Number 1: Yuuko (xxxHolic)

xxxHolic2

She’s such a classy and beautiful character and her elegant pipe just kind of finishes her image perfectly. Again, it is harder to imagine removing this aspect from the character as it really is a part of who she is. Besides, despite her outward appearance of being together and focused, when done with her work Yuuko is quite the whimsical individual who definitely lives for the pleasure of the moment.

There they are, my top 5 anime characters who smoke. Be sure to share your favourites in the comments below.

Thanks for reading.

  1. Since it’s not really part of Kogami character, I’m almost surprise to see him on that list, but I’m quite happy to see my dear Red king on there, I would probably also had Kusanagi Izumo on that list along Spike and Jean (Acca) and if smoking the pipe to create illusion count, Norito from Seraph of the End will definitely appear on my list.

  2. Aside from Sanji who was mentioned in earlier comments, I thought you’d at least have Jean from ACCA somewhere. Maybe I just have the wrong impression as to how much you love that show, but even with that, Jean’s smoking is a symbol of where he is in society (to the point where it’s why he’s known as “Cigarette Peddler”) and it does go with his overall go-with-the-flow attitude.

    1. The thing with Jean is that I could see his character working perfectly well without the Cigarette’s. They more or less could be replaced by any item or token and the plot would still work perfectly and his character could have more or less any vice and it would work. I don’t know, as much as I love ACCA, for me the cigarettes were simply a means to an end with the plot rather than something I associated directly with his character. Though, I’m glad you threw him in the mix because he certainly does spend quite a bit of time smoking considering how expensive cigarettes are supposed to be.

  3. Yuuko is an awesome choice! Not one I immediately thought of, but as soon as I saw her on your list it was like, “Yes! Definitely!”

First ones that did come to mind for me:

Revy from Black Lagoon, and Asuma from Naruto, both really cool characters who just wouldn’t be the same somehow without their cigarettes.

Waver, who started smoking cigars sometime after Fate/Zero (I don’t think it’s ever been shown in any Fate anime, but it’s in his profile info and part of his character art for the Fate/Grand Order game).

      1. Ah! I was correct. Would love to know your reasons why. If you started at the beginning, I suggest just start reading somewhere around chapter 40 or 50 or even later. It does take time for it to catch steam IMO. One Piece has great world building but it needs time to establish it.

  4. I’m happy that I don’t smoke myself πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Out of all these Kougami is the one that I know, and for some reason that smoking made him look badass (which of course it totally isn’t as smoking is the stupidest thing you can do πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚). I would add Spike Spiegel to this list 😊😊 And….only a little less than two hours to go, before secret project time is here 😊😊😊

  5. I guess I’d go with Jigen from Lupin the 3’rd, or Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop.

Actually, now that I think of it, quite a few characters in both shows smoke.

    1. I’ve noticed that in anime that either none of the characters smoke or it seems every other character is smoking. there’s a few exceptions where thy make a point of a single character doing it, but there are definitely shows where lots of characters end up smoking at various times.
