Kakuriyo No Yadomeshi Episode 2: Fairly Bland Follow Up

Episode 2 of this supernatural drama was pretty dull though seemed to be setting this up still. Your thoughts?

The majority of this episode we spend with Aoi in the annex as she contemplates her future and remembers her grandfather. This is only really broken up by her entering the inn when there is a disturbance and then the master and others being pretty horrible to her and essentially chasing her out. Then she helps a drunk tengu and it turns out he liked her grandfather.

There’s not a lot going on here from either a plot or a character point of view and about the only thing that can be said for the episode is that it seems to be laying some ground work for Aoi running the restaurant. Still, if it takes too long on this kind of set up I can see a lot of viewers getting bored fast.

What did you think of this episode?

  1. Honestly, I couldn’t agree more. Context to a certain extent is always necessary and it’s not always boring, but I felt like there could’ve been some more action/ something more important for the story in general even if it was episode 2. It kind of reminds me of Natsume’s Book of Friends (though I don’t think it’ll be as good) and The Morose Mononokean (I feel like it’ll be more similar to this one in general: some cool yokai action, episodic, fairly entertaining but ultimately won’t be much more than that).

    1. I felt the first episode was similar to Kamisama Kiss without the comedy, but you are right in that this second episode feels very Morose Mononokean and even though I enjoyed that well enough, it never did very much and was ultimately pretty forgettable.

    1. I’m with you. This helped established the background and setting a bit more, but did little to move the plot forward and given I’m kind of wanting a romance out of this, it gave us nothing on that front.
