Knight’s & Magic Episode 1: Exposition Much

Overview:

A genius programmer and hardcore robot otaku is reborn into a world of knights and magic, where huge robots called Silhouette Knights roar across the land! Now reborn as Ernesti Echevalier, he uses his vast knowledge of machines and programming talents to begin to make his ultimate robot. But his actions have unexpected results…?!

Review:

This one may become a generic piece of fluff that doesn’t amount to much, or it might end up being great fun. It is really hard to tell from the first episode given we’re meeting our main character in our world, seeing him die, and then following him over nearly three years as he decides he wants to be Knight (mostly because he wants to continue pursuing his hobby of robots even after being reborn). There’s a lot of exposition and voice over as well as a lot of blatant plot dropping conversations. The kind that just feel incredibly unnatural but they are telling us something that will probably be significant later on.

Basically, this one is a wait and see. There’s some interesting things that might happen with either the Knight’s or the magic and while the characters have started out pretty stock standard they all have potential. Still, there’s nothing really remarkable about this first episode so I’ll give it another couple of episodes to get going before I decide.

    1. I know, they said a lot but didn’t really tell us the most important parts. In that sense it felt like the second episode of Hand Shakers where we got talked at for most of the episode but learned nothing (okay, this was nowhere near as bad but there’s still a lot of holes in our knowledge).

  1. Yay for us watching the same anime again. It felt like it has been so long!

I don’t know about you, but I’m found the whole genius in modern times reincarnated into a fantasy world thing unnecessary. Especially since the only thing which seemingly has carried over from his past life being his love of robots. It isn’t like Youjo Senki where we get a strong personality that gets carried over so his past life truly matters. At least, so far that is what it seems (without giving away spoilers).

    1. I’m not too worried about spoilers this season given I’ve been reading a lot of posts over the weekend and most people are several episodes ahead of me. That said, I agree that I’m kind of over this whole reincarnated into a different world thing. Do we need a modern world protagonist in this setting? Couldn’t there have just been a really smart student who was determined to advance the technology and worked hard?
Maybe later episodes will change my mind but I’m not overly sold on the set up but I’m still kind of hopeful for the story.

      1. If there is one thing I do like is how passionate Ernie is about robots. It seems rare to get such a happy, sort of well adjusted, lead in a show.

Usually, between insecurities or ego, their genius is paired with something to either humanize them or make them someone you kind of hate. With Ernie though, you can understand why Addy has such a crush on him. Though that in itself is starting to get annoying.
