30 Day Anime Challenge: Day 24

Day 24 – I love a good antagonist. That said, anime has some pretty terrible villains scattered throughout the many series so thinking about the best one is taking some effort. The obvious choice would be Makishima from Psycho Pass. He’s fantastic but I’m not 100% convinced he fits the role of antagonist (though that’s definitely a thought for another day when I have far more time).

This would actually be easier if it was just best villain rather than antagonist.

Okay, I’m going to go with Zoisite from Sailor Moon. Unlike so many other Sailor Moon mid-level villains, Zoisite actually seemed to really hate the scouts at times and that mocking laughter after getting the better of the scouts was fairly grating even to the audience. Realistically, Zoisite was a better antagonist opposite Tuxedo Mask and the two of them had some great moments on screen together, you know until Zoisite stabbed him in the back and was then killed by Beryl. Minor detail.

I know that was a weird choice but finding a truly antagonistic anime character who isn’t just an over the top overpowered villain is kind of hard. I’d love to know who you would pick.

  1. I’m going to go with Makishima, as you say he might not fit the role entirely, but he comes close, so yeah he’s my choice for this one. He was such a briljant character in this terrific series. Even though he was evil, I could still see some of the choices he made, and why he made them. (Even though they were at times very sickening to say the least 😊).

  2. Zoycite is a really good one, both in the DiC and Vis dubs she/he is amazing!

It’s such a hard choice but as far as an antagonist that I down right hated and wanted to sock in the face every time they were on screen I think I’d have to go with either Aizen from Bleach, or Ragyo from Kill la Kill. Both are just super evil to me for such selfish motivations, can’t stand them!

  3. For me it’s Soo-Won from Akatsuki no Yona. He genuinely cares for the kingdom and for Yona, but his ideals clashed with that of Yona though they both want to make Kouka better. He is kind but is also cunning. There’s still a lot of mystery surrounding his character and I’m excited to know the whole of his knowledge about king Il’s death, his motivation and everything.

    As for a completed series, the first I thought of is Toguro of Yu Yu Hakusho. I liked his backstory with Genkai and got hurt because of how they ended up with conflicting beliefs. ;u;

      1. True. Things are getting more complicated in the manga now and I’m feeling that light is going to be shed to him sooner. Though I still want that second season of the anime. I forgot that this is an anime challenge, so if it’s based on the anime only, Soo Won isn’t much because he only has a few appearances. >w<

  4. That’s a tough one.

I know one of my top ones would be Johan from Monster. He was so calculative and most people in the story don’t even believe how evil he truly is. It’s amazing how intelligent he is and how he’s able to fool several characters. His connection with the main character Dr. Tenma makes their rivalry incredibly intense.

    Some other mentions:

Harry Killer from Patapata Hikousen no Bouken: He’s quite a manipulative villain, but he didn’t have to end up as evil as he did which makes him character tragic.

Queen Delphine from Last Exile: She’s so villainous while flaunting her luxuries that people have starved for to fulfill her lavish lifestyle.

Kano from Texhnolyze: He mainly operates in the shadows, but he’s able to get other characters to switch sides to join his cause.

Claw from Kimba the White Lion: He’s the original evil black-maned partially disfigured lion with hyena henchmen that takes over the main character’s kingdom. πŸ˜›

Honi from Kurogane Communication: Most genocidal robot ever.

Koemushi/Dung Beetle from Bokurano: Sure, he doesn’t start out as obviously evil, but he’s got some really sadistic plans as revealed in the 2nd half of the series. Ugh…he’s just so creepy with that fixed smile and everything.

Me-Mania from Perfect Blue: He makes other obsessed stalker fans look nice by comparison.

  5. Makishima is definitely one of my favorite anime…antagonists (?). Like you, I’m not 100% sure he fits the role of antagonist perfectly. Psycho Pass definitely makes you question the line between villain and antagonist.
One of the most villainous things he did was make me feel like I’m an uncultured idiot for my taste in books πŸ˜‚. (I’m joking, I’m joking…he did worse, of course)
