30 Day Anime Challenge: Day 16

Day 16 brings us to favourite fantasy or supernatural anime. I only get to pick one? Okay, given how many times I have already cheated during this challenge and how many times I intend to cheat later, forget one. Fantasy and supernatural anime are my favourite period. For me to dislike a fantasy or supernatural anime usually means it is outright unwatchable because I will sit through almost anything if it has some decent fantasy going in it and supernatural stories are among my favourites.

Alright, I’m going to remove a lot of options from my list simply by saying it has to be a pure fantasy or supernatural anime (so no slice of life or romances going on with fantasy). That actually does help cut it down significantly. Plus, there isn’t actually a science fiction option in this list so all of those anime are gone.

Black Butler, Soul Eater, D Gray Man and Shiki. That’s the smallest I can make this list. Demon possession, action and very cool world building, light verses darkness but you are never sure what the light is, and vampire horror. Come on, they are a perfect combination and now I really want to watch the best episodes of each of these in a one night marathon because that would be kind of a cool experience.

There are literally dozens of other shows I would love to add to this list so please share your favourite fantasy and supernatural anime in the comments below.

    1. Finally getting to watch Seraph of the end properly as it came out on animelab in Australia. It makes a lot more sense when properly subbed then my previous experiences with the anime made me believe. Enjoying it so far.

    1. Shiki is one of those odd anime that some people really love but others find really painful to watch. Personally I think it is brilliant but I can see where some people find it a bit hard to take.

      1. Yea some scenes can really turn the stomach. Still, I personally feel that we all need an occasional, healthy dose of tragedy and cruelty in order to stay in touch with reality.

Anyway, I’m glad that to know that someone else other than me appreciates this anime. Cheers! πŸ™‚

  1. Pff, I’ve been cheating from the beginning. Still, fantasy huh. I’m pretty sure my pick would be Fate, which one? All. Rules? What were they.

The only one I’ve watched of yours are Black Butler and D.Gray-man, although I can’t really share the same viewpoint with the former, I can see the reason for the latter. I really like it too (though the latest season being so far away from the… very long one is somehow bothering, especially the change of artstyle). The Manga hiatuses are painful though.

      1. Yeah, though the design change weirded me out in the beginning, I still enjoyed it. Sadly I don’t think there is enough source material for another season (yet). Not to mention, the author goes in hiatus fairly often (or rather, for long periods of time).

  2. I just came to a pretty shocking conclusion. Looking through my list of anime I have watched the only fantasy/supernatural anime that I have seen is Alderamin on the Sky, and I did not even particularly like that one. Unless I’m counting Brynhildr in the Darkness, but that was more an anime that took a scientific approach. Hmmm…okay, this means the first new anime I am going to watch now will have to have a fantasy element added to it. Wow, this was a real shock for me honestly lol πŸ˜‚ Especially since I love fantasy 😊
