Attack on Titan Season 2 Episode 2

From an action point of view, not a lot happened this episode. We probably should have expected that given how many characters are not currently geared up for a fight. Sasha, however, manages to shine. Through flashbacks of her past we learn a bit more about our food obsessed character and then we see her taken an axe to a Titan, even knowing that realistically there’s no real way for that to be effective. Still, Sasha manages well enough for someone practically unarmed and then poorly armed given the threat (and let’s just be happy there was only one Titan because otherwise this would be really hard to swallow). Eren, Levi and co get a small moment in this episode but they aren’t the focus and it is more like the show is just reminding us they exist and the final moments of the episode are given to Connie who is having a less than fantastic return to his home village. It does look like next episode is going to crank up the action a bit from the preview, but I actually really liked this episodes focus on Sasha.

  1. I’m so glad they showed more about Sasha rather than leaving her just as a food-obsessed girl. I don’t mind learning more about characters even if there’s not as much action, so I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, probably more than the first.

  2. I think that after this episode, everyone will remember Sasha as more than just the potato girl. You’re right though – her survival would have been far harder to believe had there been more titans or even if that titan was bigger.

    1. Realistically, given the death count for the fully equipped and experienced soldiers against titans, singular or otherwise, Sasha’s survival is outright miraculous. Very cool moment for her.

  3. When watching this episode, I was fangirling, big time! Sasha really deserved the character development she got in the episode and it was a cool experience seeing her past and how she acted when she first entered the training camp. I can’t wait to see what this season has in store for the other characters! 🙂

  4. I was glad to see a bigger focus on Sasha as a character rather than a stale meme. Because of this backstory and interactions, she has started to become one of my favorite characters in the series. Also, the overall gritty feel to this episode felt completely different from what I remember from the first season.

    1. It was far more character focussed and while from an action point of view it wasn’t as spectacular it actually worked better because I genuinely wanted Sasha to succeed in the situation. Worked quite well.

  5. If it’s faithful to the manga (so far it is) I’d say this season is more of a slow burn than a heavy action. We will have some action set pieces sure. However it won’t be the hug spectacle the first season was. It was actually a good change of pace in the manga as it allowed you to focus on the characters more and learn their names. Rather than just being Potato Girl, Marco, Jean etc. It also showcases more of the groups relations without Eren, Mikasa, and Armin. Since as a functioning organization there needs to be more going on. Honestly I didn’t mind. Since following the same character all the time, doing the same things gets boring and repetitive, looking at you Goku.

  6. It is interesting to see that Eren and the rest of the gang, seem to have far less an important role in this season, as in the previous one (but maybe this will change in the future). As for Sasha, really liked the strong impression she made in this episode. She slowly is turning into one of my favorite Attack on Titan characters, so I hope we get to see more of her this season 😊

    1. I finally remembered her name after this episode (no more potato girl – or at least not often). And yes, she is fast becoming one of my favourite characters so now I’m just hoping they don’t kill her off in the next couple of episodes.
