Spring 2017 Week 1

The first change you will notice is that I’ve moved my week recaps from Saturday to Sunday. I was never finished reviewing the anime of the week on Saturday anyway so it just made sense to shift the overview.

Secondly, I’ve decided to write my short thoughts on the show directly under the name rather than at the end of each category.

Otherwise, welcome to Spring 2017. This week I’m listing the shows I’ve started and where I think they’ll end up but there will be a lot of movement over the first few weeks and some shows I won’t catch up with the first episode for a little bit so will have to do some combination reviews of the first couple of episodes. I have also decided not to write individual posts on shows I have dropped by the end of episode 1 as I have enough other shows to write about. Anything else on the list has either been written about of a post is scheduled.

As always, I would love to know your thoughts on the shows this season so please leave a comment below.

Must Watch

Kado: The Right Answer (Episode 1)

I don’t know if this show is going to stay here but that first episode (plus episode 0) really grabbed my attention. Admittedly, it could easily go downhill and even episode 1 wasn’t flawless (slow pace, lots of characters, little actual progress, and some questionable animation), but if the goal ofa first episode is to make you want more, Kado did that for me.

Usually Entertaining

Attack on Titan Season 2 (Episode 2)

So we returned and everything is pretty much where we left it (in terrible condition, people cannot get on even though they may be the last survivors and there is still lots of shouting and fatalistic view points being thrown around). Still, if you like the fights, the shock gore, and the generally tragic nature of this show, episode 1 of this season delivered by the end. By the end of episode 2 we have had a lot more focus on some of the other characters (Sasha and Connie). This one probably won’t be a must watch simply because I have never really connected with the characters during season 1, though Sasha is doing a fair job of making me care if she survives. That said, I did love watching the first season the first time because of the strong emotional response it created so I’m hoping to enjoy season 2.

Sagrada Reset (Episode 1)

Very uncertain about the placement of this one. I don’t know that entertaining is the word to describe the episode but I do know that I really am waiting on a second episode of this because my curiosity is firing full steam ahead and I just want to know where this plans to go. The answer might be nowhere but I’m really hopeful at the moment. Very much enjoyed the first episode even while I kept kind of waiting to see what the overall story would be.

Alice & Zoroku (Epsidoe 1)

Still really unclear what this is going to be, but as a first episode I was certainly kept intrigued. Given it was a 45 minute episode it could have dragged but it was over before I knew it and I really wanted to see what was next so looking forward to where this goes. Definitely a possibility that this will become something that I’m not interested in, but also the possibility that it could be really interesting, so I’m staying hopeful.

My Hero Academia Season 2 (Episode 15)

I’m going to very briefly give this show the benefit of the doubt, despite being burned by a lot of lame sequels in Winter. The first episode wasn’t great, but the final few minutes certainly give me reason to hope this season will find its feet and the second episode tried really hard to recapture some of what made season 1 entertaining. There’s a lot of potential for this to be great so lets hope it gets there because season 1 was just plain fun.

Eromanga Sensei (Episode 1)

Right, this is a very weird starting placement for an anime about a brother who writes light novels and a shut in sister who draws the artwork for them that is also filled with a whole bunch of stock standard moments, yet I kind of enjoyed this first episode (okay, I actually really enjoyed it and it finished before I even realised). I don’t know if this one will stick or not but ther first episode was definitely entertaining.

Exorcist18

Okay, I Guess

Granblue Fantasy (Episode 2)

I’m optimistic that this one will get better as it goes, but the first episode is pretty generic and pretty ordinary. Not bad, it just doesn’t have anything to really draw you in and is mostly pretty flat emotionally even though the events feel like they should be more exciting. Second episode is much the same but the characters kind of set a goal to head off toward which could be fun. So hopefully this will see an improvement in future episodes.

The Laughing Salesman (Episode 1)

This one is tentatively here. I could end up really enjoying the mindlessness of it, or it could become really tedious. The art work is certainly making this a good candidate for the ‘They Made This’ category. Still, I’m going to give this a couple of episodes to see what it does before I make up my mind.

The Royal Tutor (Episode 1)

This wasn’t a bad first episode, but it terms of genre, this one isn’t really for me. Still, it wasn’t a dreadful first episode and parts of it were actually kind of interesting and fun. I’m up for another episode just to see what they intend with the main character and then I’ll decide if I’m sticking with this.

Tsukigakirei (Episode 1)

Fairly inoffensive middle school romance thing. First episode was pretty much set up and fairly slow but nothing wrong with it. Not sure it’s really going to be my thing so I’ll give it another episode and then decide.

Tattoo6

They Made This

The Silver Guardian (Episode 2)

Common sense tells me this should end up in tried and dropped. It has given all indications that it is going to be another nonsense, poorly animated show with characters I don’t care about (why didn’t I drop this already?) so I’m hopefully going to do the sensible thing and drop it after the next episode, though somehow I think I’ll probably just keep justifying this one to myself and end up loathing the fact that I watched this. Maybe it will get better. It might.

Armed Girls Machiavellism (Episode 1)

This one could potentially get better but episode 1 isn’t really interested in doing much beyond the standard cliché’s you would expect from its premise. Still, better than Akashic Records in that at least the episode had some good moments and pacing even while it was hopelessly predictable. Though I have to wonder what is with the title here.

Akashic Records of Bastard Magical Instructor (Episode 1)

This is cliché ridden lazy writing at its worst. For a first episode the only thing it does is embrace the worst of the light novel tropes and all you have to wonder is why you would even bother releasing such a pathetic attempt at a story. Maybe it will get better but my bet would be that this one is going to get dropped fast.

Tried and Dropped

Sakura Quest (Episode 1)

There was nothing actually wrong with Sakura Quest but it just isn’t my sort of show and I didn’t really have any interest in the main character so I’ve decided to move on for now. This one though I may revisit later and give more of a chance to, because from a quality point of view it is better than shows I’m holding onto for a second week.

Love Tyrant (Episode 1)

I didn’t make it through much of the first episode of this. I guess if you are into that sort of comedy there isn’t anything overly wrong with this episode but it isn’t for me and there’s enough other titles for me to check out that I moved on.

Clockwork Planet (Episode 1)

This is the first one I’ve dropped because I genuinely found it unwatchable. Hated the characters, the set up wasn’t doing much for me, and visually it was kind of a mish mash. All and all, I’m just not willing to give this any more of my time.

First week of tried shows done. No idea what will stick yet but hopefully I’ll have a final watch list soon.

  1. I probably would have dropped Kado if it weren’t for that episode 0, which actually struck me as being really heartfelt and interesting. I’m not sure yet whether or not it’s going to go downhill from here, but for better or worse it caught my attention.

  2. Clockwork is an interesting one, it kind of reminds me of the game resonance of fate. Where they live on bezels. Certainly kept my expect low on it. Granblu is okay, though I am finding it hard to keep interest in it. The first epi came out in Jan I think, so kind of weird why the second one comes out now.

    1. I had fun with it. Okay, it wasn’t brilliant but it is a fairly old school format and it works well enough as long as the individual stories are functional so hopefully it will be entertaining enough.

    1. Both Sakura Quest and Tsukigakirei were well done, but not really my thing. Sakura Quest I just dropped. There’s enough people who appreciate it actually covering it. Tsukigakirei looks like it might do something (I liked Kimi ni Todoke so it isn’t like I’m opposed to slow romances or school stories as a whole). I may still drop it but I’ll give it another week at least.
      Hope you enjoy the season.

  3. Spoilers for non Manga Readers!!

yea I can’t wait to see Kenny Ackerman animated. And pretty much all the gun battles that take place. Even the castle siege might be a fun episode. I do think people will be disappointed as it will focus less on Titans and more on people.

My only problem now the anime is at the whim of popularity. The core characters pretty much can’t be killed off. I compare it to the Walking Dead. In the beginning anyone could die at any time. Matter of fact that was part of its appeal. Now people are invested it has to be a noble sacrifice or a big battle before someone dies.

Also Jean is pretty much safe since he is the author’s favorite character.

  4. I really liked Kado…I stumbled across it by pure coincidence, and it grabbed my attention straight from the start. Hopefully it does stay like this, because seriously I can’t wait to find out where this series will be heading towards 😀

    1. Same, I had no ide real info about Kado but saw it on Crunchyroll and gave it a whirl. I don’t know if it will stay a must watch but of all the first episodes I watched last week, that was the one show I thought I had to keep watching.

  5. I thought episode 2 was pretty good. Though I will admit some of it is lost in translation. It’s a little more obvious in the manga that Sasha is hiding her real accent and trying to fit in. This episode is basically about her accepting who she really is.

I do think that by the end of the season you will care more about the side cast of characters who are left in the Recon Corps. At least if it ends where I think it will end.

  6. I’ll be reading the manga of attack of titan instead of watching it. With only 12 episodes I doubt it will enough time catch on to the manga.

    1. The manga is pretty good. Though you will have trouble telling the blonde characters apart that aren’t Commander Erwin. I know I sure did. It’s easier to tell in the anime since we have different color palettes and they cleaned up his art style to fit a more traditional anime style.

It actually does get weird where they season is. And you will probably want to see it animated because he is also not the best at drawing fight scenes. Some of it will probably look amazing animated. I do think they will catch up in 12 episodes because they are probably going to stop at the end of he arc they are on. And anime episodes typically take 2-3 manga chapters.

Once you reach the end of the government conspiracy arc. You will know what I mean. I predict the show will end the season there.

          1. Although I am caught up with the newest chapter of the AOT manga, I am still going to watch the series because I want to see how the directors and animators handle season 2, even though there is going to be only twelve episodes.
