Winter 2017 Week 4

Week 4, and Fuuka has been dropped but I’m not sure if I’m replacing it with something else or whether I’m just going to leave it be for this season. Another fun week in anime viewing and this week also saw my reflections on January and I’m currently reviewing (very slowly) Killing Stalking (we’ll see how far I get).

For patrons, there’s my highlight of the week on patreon as well as my lesser top 5 list. For everyone else, another chapter of Scum’s Wish has been reviewed and my reviews for Super Lovers episodes 1 – 3 are available on my patreon site so be sure to check it out.

As always feel free to share your thoughts on this season in the comments below.

Must Watch

  • March Comes in Like a Lion (Episode 15)
  • ACCA (Episode 4)

March continues to surprise me and yet manages to remain consistent in its delivery (even if that consistency is characterised by swings from strong emotional drama to very cheesy comedy). I’m really starting to get curious about what the end point for this series will be, because the journey has been fun but almost every prediction I’ve made for the show has been wrong so at this stage I’m just trying to imagine where we’ll end up.

ACCA continues to slowly bubble away as they set up unrest in the districts and continue to circle each other watching fo the slightest sign that someone is involved in something. A lot of this week was taken up with an individual district’s internal issues but you can’t help but feel that somehow it fits into the overall story if only you could make the links.

Usually Entertaining

  • Tales of Zestiria the X Season 2 (Episode 4)
  • Iron Blooded Orphans (Episode 40)
  • Chain Chronicle (Episode 4)
  • Blue Exorcist (Episode 30)

Zestiria continues to roll out Rose’s story and as I’m enjoying her character I’ve been highly entertained by the last few episodes. Eventually however I am certain that Sorey needs to get back to Shepherding.

Iron Blooded Orphans returns to what Gundam does best and it kind of makes all those weeks of set up kind of worth it. Looking forward to what comes next.

Chain Chronicle continues to be just an alright fantasy story. It’s not deep and the characterisation is pretty ordinary, but we get a nice array of standard fantasy settings and fairly regular skirmishes to keep things moving along.

Blue Exorcist episode 30 and I’m very close to dropping this down to just okay. Season 1 was usually entertaining but season 2, taken by itself has delivered very little so far. If next week doesn’t get things moving I’m thinking Blue Exorcist won’t be staying here on the list.

Okay, I Guess

  • Super Lovers (Episode 4)
  • Interviews with Monster Girls (Episode 4)

Super Lovers episode 4 maintains much what you would expect from the show at this point. The tendency for characters’ noses to disappear at times really throws me because I look at their face wondering what is wrong with them for a moment before I realise and usually I miss the line of dialogue I was supposed to be listening to. Anyway, my review of this will be out on patreon next week sometimes.

Interviews With Monster Girls continues to be okay with moments of charm but lots of downtime. It’s relaxing to watch but there’s nothing really standing out at the moment.

They Made This

  • elDLIVE (Episode 4)
  • Spiritpact (Episode 4)
  • Hand Shakers (Episode 4)
  • Akiba’s Trip (Episode 5)

elDLIVE seems to finally be improving and if it continues like this I’ll have to re-evaluate where its sitting in this list. The premise of the show was always kind of interesting so if it actually starts delivering a decent story this could be quite entertaining.

If Spiritpact could consistently focus on its good points it would be okay. But inbetween each moment of actually good storytelling is a whole pile of stuff that is pretty dreadful to watch.  Fortunately there’s enough worth holding onto that I’ll keep watching it, but there isn’t enough worth watching that I would consider recommending this to someone else.

Surprisingly, Hand Shakers is no longer the bottom of this list. Though that isn’t so much because it got better as I more acclimatised myself to what it was and Akiba’s Trip has been steadily falling in quality. That said, at least Hand Shakers is consistent at what it is doing, whatever that may be. My review of this will be out next week with episode 5.

Akiba’s Trip has thoroughly established itself as an anime that through every decent bit of dialogue or humour into its first episode and is now willing to just make us wade through variations of the same joke for the rest of the season. Episode 5 is objectively better than episode 4 but it still isn’t exactly doing great things.

Tried and Dropped

  • Fuuka (Episode 5)
  • Trickster (Episode 13)
  • Gabriel DropOut (Episode 1)
  • Masamune-Kun’s Revenge (Episode 1)
  • Schoolgirl Strikers (Episode 1)
  • Seiren (Episode 1)
  • Saga of Tanya the Evil (Episode 1)
  • Chaos;Child (Episode 1 – five minutes in)

At the end of week 4, which character are you loving the most?

  1. I’ve not had a chance to get into ACCA, and have decided to wait until March ends so I can marathon it. Which just leaves Konosuba 2 as the only thing I’m actively watching.

Nobody is more surprised than I am that Konosuba has ended up being a thing I enjoy, either.

      1. I didn’t at first, myself. It wasn’t until season 2 had already started that I actually watched season 1.

Maybe I’m just in the mood for slapstick humor right now, but it ended up appealing to me, and I enjoy the laugh it gives me.
