Winter 2017 Week 1

Welcome to Winter 2017 (or if you live in Australia, Summer while watching Winter anime). This last week and a bit has really just been a taster week for me and I know there are some shows I’ll need to catch up on next week so some reviews might be episodes 1 and 2 combined. After starting the season I’m not really sold on this season which is a shame after the last two seasons where there have been plenty of things to start off with (even if they didn’t deliver).

Okay, I’ve decided to re-categorise my list this season (mostly because I need to create a category for those shows I know are absolute rubbish but decide to watch anyway). Any suggestions or feedback on the new categories would be greatly appreciated.

What do the categories mean?

Must Watch: Means exactly what is says. These are the shows I am hanging out to watch. If an episode is delayed I will be upset. If the show unexpectedly gets cancelled I’ll be devastated (well maybe not, it is just a show, but I would be saddened).

Usually Entertaining: Are the shows I am enjoying and would probably recommend watching to others but they aren’t without their flaws and occasional episodes will be a bit sleepy.

Okay, I Guess: For all those shows that maybe started well and then became generic, or were pretty generic but I had hoped they would improve. They aren’t really recommendable but aren’t particularly bad either.

They Made This: This category exists for all of those shows I insist on picking up and sticking with even when the number of redeemable qualities has dwindled to zero.

Tried and Dropped: Keeps the same name and means exactly that. The shows here may not actually be bad but they either didn’t fit into my schedule, I didn’t find them interesting enough at the time, or I may be planning to revisit later should I read the reviews of others and get interested again or should I drop a few shows from my watch list.

This is my current list with every show I’ve so far sampled except Super Lovers Season 2 which I will be watching but not reviewing weekly. I’ll do a series review at the end if I make it through the season, or I’ll start doing episode reviews if I drop something else. That was way too long an introduction so now I’m getting into the list.

Feel free to share your thoughts on this season in the comments below.

Must Watch

  • March Comes in Like a Lion (Episode 12)
  • ACCA (Episode 1)

New opening aside, March Comes in Like a Lion continues to be a strong and interesting anime. I was worried that it would kind of fall flat after the half season point but this week it is still going very strong.

While I will fully admit there’s a good chance ACCA will not develop in the way I’m anticipating and as a result I’ll get bored with it and it will drop lower on my list, at the moment this show has the most potential from the new ones I’ve started to really be interesting so I’m placing it here in hope (will review episode 1 with episode 2 next week).

Usually Entertaining

  • Tales of Zestiria the X Season 2 (Episode 1)
  • Blue Exorcist (Episode 27)

While I have really enjoyed Tales of Zestiria, if it disappeared tomorrow I probably wouldn’t be all that upset which is why it isn’t in my must watch list. That said, it is certainly the best of the first episodes I’ve watched for Winter 2017. Not that it had all that much competition.

The first season of Blue Exorcist was enjoyable enough but I really don’t like Rin or Yukio as characters so that kind of kills some of the fun. Also, a lot of the characters spend a lot of time shouting slogans at one another. That said, second season here we come and this was a fairly solid start.

Exorcist18

Okay, I Guess

  • Akiba’s Trip (Episode 2)
  • Chain Chronicle – The Light of Haecceitas (Episode 1)
  • Fuuka (Episode 3)
  • elDLIVE (Episode 1)
  • Interviews with Monster Girls (Episode 1)

If you had asked me after reading the synopsis of all the Winter Shows which ones I felt for sure I would drop during first episode, Akiba’s Trip would have definitely been on that list. Yet, the first episode of this convinced me that it was worth sticking with for now. The second episode is even more ridiculous than the first and yet instead of being annoyed I found it to be pretty funny.

Chain Chronicle probably isn’t all that good given it doesn’t really do much to disguise its based on a game origins but I’m starved for a fantasy and this hack and slash first episode with a little bit of magic was kind of nice.

Fuuka seems like the typical highschool slightly romantic-comedy-slice-of-life thing. It’s enjoyable enough and things seem to be moving along so I’m sticking with it for now. Though episode 3 nearly got it dropped after I had to stop the episode during a particular scene at the beach. Returning to the episode and skipping forward a bit helped.

elDLIVE’s first episode was a bit of a hit and miss. The opening sequence was so riddled with clichΓ©s I was ready to call it but I liked the concept of the character hearing a voice and persevered. The second half was better (still pretty predictable but entertaining at least). I’m kind of hoping this one will grow into its story as the concept could be kind of fun.

Interviews with Monster Girls I checked out after I’d read a lot of reviews. While very few people were raving about it, most had found it alright. After watching, that was my opinion. It’s kind of alright. Hopefully it can continue being alright (will review episode 1 with episode 2 next week).

They Made This

  • Spiritpact (Episode 1)
  • Hand Shakers (Episode 1)

Behold my Hitori no Shita of the season, Spiritpact. A show where episode 1 is a trainwreck and yet there’s something oddly fascinating. Of course, if this does follow the path of Hitori no Shita it will also end up a contender for worst anime I sat through this year so I’m kind of looking forward to seeing what sort of mess this ends up being.

Hand Shakers is pretty dreadful but I’m just interested enough in the explanation that it looks like we’ll get next week that I’ll watch one more episode. That said, not expecting much (will review episode 1 with episode 2 next week).

gangsta6

Tried and Dropped

  • Trickster (Episode 13)
  • Gabriel DropOut (Episode 1)
  • Masamune-Kun’s Revenge (Episode 1)
  • Schoolgirl Strikers (Episode 1)
  • Seiren (Episode 1)
  • Saga of Tanya the Evil (Episode 1)
  • Chaos;Child (Episode 1 – five minutes in)

I was going to give Trickster one more episode, and then some stuff came out that I kind of liked and to be honest if I’ve been threatening to drop it for that many weeks I am just not enjoying it.

Gabriel DropOut is pretty much what you expect from a series about a teenage angel coming to earth and becoming addicted to video games. While there were some genuinely funny moments mostly this just felt pretty by the numbers.

I don’t much like the premise of Masamune-Kun’s Revenge but I kind of hoped for an average kind of show. Episode 1 however fell short of even average and was just kind of dull. Maybe it will improve so I actually plan on watching one more episode of this but I’m pretty sure it is staying here in the dropped pile.

Schoolgirl Strikers is generic and tedious so odds are I won’t make it through the second episode but it wasn’t quite bad enough to call dead on arrival. Then again, I just don’t see me getting into it so I’ll leave it here for now.

Seiren isn’t particularly bad but it is irredeemably boring. When all is said and done I’d rather watch a broken show than a boring one because at least it gives me something to think about. All this episode gave me was twenty minutes to think about what I was going to watch once it was finally done.

I just couldn’t get in to Saga of Tanya the Evil. It wasn’t particularly interesting and looked pretty ugly. Maybe this will be a surprise hit but it just wasn’t doing much for me.

Alright, I didn’t much like Chaos;Head but I did finish watching it so I decided to at least give this Chaos;Child a go. Started it and got annoyed with it recapping Chaos;Head and dropped it.

Okay, after week 1, what shows have you decided to stick with for at least another couple of episodes?

  1. I like the new categories. ‘They Made This’ will be amusing each time I see it.

This season does seem way weaker than the last. I’m looking forward to your thoughts on all the shows I will probably never watch.

    1. I think people who actually like comedy and high school romances will probably be having a better time this season but given neither of these really appeal there just isn’t that much for me to choose from.

  2. ‘They Made This’ definitely seems like an appropriate category. I’m hoping that other people cover Hand Shakers, as like I mentioned it actually made me physically nauseous to watch, but I have a perverse sort of fascination in finding out if there’s anything entertaining or of any value hidden behind the constantly moving camera.

I’m surprised that you (even somewhat) enjoyed Interviews With Monster Girls. It’s definitely one of my top picks for the season, but I know that you tend to prefer things with more plot and character development. I guess the season is a bit light on plot-heavy series which may have affected your viewing choices.

    1. My viewing choices were definitely affected by lack of choice and there’s certainly a lot less must watch this season so it wil be interesting to see how many shows I make it through. After watching the second episode of Monster Girls I’m not disliking it but I’m not that interested either.

  3. Excellent new updates to your categories πŸ‘Œ
I actually haven’t started any of this season’s anime, I’m not really for seasonally watching. I’m looking forward to Super Lovers 2, since I watched Season 1and liked or πŸ™
I’m going to try watching the first season of Rakugo, so i can season 2, since i heard good things and that’s about it :’D
Tbh, i just want more sports anime. Can’t wait for S3 of YowaPeda this year πŸ‘€πŸ‘€πŸ‘Œ

    1. I’m kind of watching Super Lovers 2 only because I finished Season 1 and there’s this part of me that just wants to know what happens next. That said, it isn’t the most comfortable watch at times.

      1. I’m curious what’ll happen too.
I don’t feel the age gap as much because Ren is rather mature, I don’t like it when they’re clearly immature tho, I totally understand tho! πŸ’¦πŸ’¦

    1. A lot of people are very excited about that one. I didn’t really get into the first season so I’m not picking it up at the moment but it has been fun reading the reactions of others to its return.

  4. Yeah, it’s not the best season to be sure. I think if I didn’t have the second season of Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu to obsess over I’d be much less satisfied than I currently am.

I’ll never stop laughing at how bad Hand Shakers is though… it must take a lot of work to be that terrible.

    1. That’s probably why I decided to continue watching it. I just have to see if it stays there or whether it gets better or somehow manages to get worse. That and the basic idea is interesting if they could figure out how to convey characters and story.

    1. I needed a category for those shows given I’m watching them knowing they aren’t good but there was something entertaining enough about them but I’m sticking with them. Maybe they’ll even get better (not holding my breath too much on that one).

  5. Glad to here Akiba’s holds up through episode 2. I was also impressed by how not bad episode 1 was, and now I’m just hoping it can keep it up.
Masamune-kun’s revenge has me hooked by just how obnoxious the main character is. It’s a refreshing departure from stock anime protag. I have a feeling he’s bound to get what’s coming to him. It’s like Konosube; they’re all bad people, so laugh at their inevitable misery.
Speaking of which, no Konosuba on this list? Did you not like the first season?
Those three probably sum of the season for me, but I’ll be sure to check out ACCA when episode 1 is free.

    1. I didn’t get through ejpisode 1 of the first season. I hated the characters, much like Re:Zero. No matter how many people told me Konosuba was great I just couldn’t watch it. So, no second season here but I’ll certainly know what happens given how many other people are covering it.
